Help an awesome kid get school supplies

Hi folks.

My roommate’s daughter Max, a fantastically bright fancreature who is my buddy in all matters pertaining to feels and flailing about our respective fandoms (she explains the intricacies of Voltron and Camp Camp to me, I rant about Game of Thrones to her) is about to start 7th grade in a new school in a few days.

Her mom, who’s a single parent, is in a serious financial crunch at the moment, and has literally a dollar and some change to her name until her next payday, which won’t be until next week. (And even then, she won’t have much left over after rent and loans and stuff.) SO: Max needs school supplies. She’s got clothes and bookbag, but all the other stuff–notebooks, binders, Kleenex, post-it notes, pens and pencils, etc–need to be obtained by September 5th.

I myself am close enough to being broke that I can’t help as much as I would like. So I thought I would ask you guys if you would be willing to chip in. Any amount would help–$5 is enough for a couple of cheap binders or notebooks or a box of Kleenex. Max and her mom don’t have Paypal, so if you’d like to donate, please do so at [email protected] and make a note that it’s for school supplies. If anyone wants receipts to prove that I didn’t just squander the money on tea and chocolate for myself, I’m happy to provide them.

This exercise is simple, but extremely effective.

Step 1: Make a list of all the things you want colleges to know about you.

How? You can do this either:

in a bulletpoint format (organized, easy to read)

on a blank sheet of paper (with drawings, get creative)

on a timeline (see drawing below)

Note: I don’t recommend a stream-of-consciousness free-write because this tends to get a little messy. By “messy” I mean that this tends to bring forth a lot of words but not a lot of specific, bullet-pointable qualities that will help you get into college.

And that’s the point of this list: to provide your counselor (or yourself) with a solid list of qualities, values and cool stuff that will help get you into college.

Reason #1 that this list is a good idea: It generates a list of details and possible topics for your personal statement, supplements, activities list and additional info section.

Tips for creating a great list:

Have fun. This doesn’t have to be a chore. It’s you basically making a list of everything that’s awesome about who you are and what you’ve done, which can be pretty darn affirming.

Create the list with a parent or friend. Say to him/her: “Hey, I’m trying to make a list of all the reasons why any college should love me as much as you do—can you help?”

Back up general stuff with specific examples. If, for instance, you’re like, “I can motivate people!” or “I stick with things I’m passionate about!” provide a specific example that backs up your claim—or better yet, both claims! (Like the fact that you helped raise debate membership from 19 to 96 at your school over four years.)

Step 2: Once you’ve created your list:

If it’s a bullet-pointed list, upload it to a Google doc and…

If it’s a drawing or timeline, take a photo of it, email it to yourself, upload it to Google a doc and…

SHARE the Google doc with your friend/parent/counselor (whoever is helping you with your applications and ask that person: “Can you help me make sure that all this stuff makes it into my application?”

Wait, can I do this once my application is almost finished? Absolutely. In fact, this will provide a checklist for making sure all the important parts of you are represented somewhere in the application.

Step 3: Decide with your counselor where the information should go in your application.

Activities List

Additional Info section

Extracurricular essay (required only for some schools)

Another supplemental essay (required only for some schools)

I am half Filipino and half Egyptian

I travel a lot (have been to countless countries such as Egypt, the Philippines, Netherlands, Italy, Jamaica, Bahamas, Mexico, Guam, etc….)

I have played the violin for over 11 years and I LOVE IT

I can also play the piano

I do canoe paddling year round. We once saw dolphins swimming by us as we paddled out deep in the ocean.

I have an entrepreneurial mind. I made $300 in a week selling coffee at my dads office when I was 7. I named the booth the “Coffee Cafe” and had my own menu with various drinks as well as a bean grinder. I ended up donating all of the profits to my missionary friend Kate who was leaving for India. When I was 12 I made $70 selling online ebooks about basketball that I wrote. I painted curb address numbers for neighbors when I was 11 and made about $100 off of that.

I like weightlifting. I also sell supplements to my friends at school. I buy them in bulk online and mix some, for example, whey with creatine, and re-brand them (not FDA approved, uh-oh) and sell them for profit.

I tend to bypass the system (and get away with it a lot) such as sending money to paypal directly from VISA (even though they say it isn’t possible) or finding a way to get past the school’s online filter

I love reading (my bookshelf is stacked)

Note: there’s no “right” answer for where each of these details should go. No magic formula. Just work with your counselor (or me) to make sure your application shows you off in the most complete way possible.

What You Really Need to Bring to College (and What You Can Leave Behind)

It’s back to school time and every store is going to try to sell you on what you “need” to bring to school and honestly, you could do without most of it. Especially in your freshman year, you’re going to be very limited on space, but will worry about leaving something behind that you won’t be able to get later. Some of you live within easy driving distance of school, but lots go away to school each year and need to be prepared.

I went through lists of dorm room “essentials” and broke it down into what you actually need, what’s nice to have, optional items, and what you can do without. Obviously, every student is different and some of these won’t apply to you or you may need extra things, but this will help get you started.

I see tons of advice for how to write first drafts, but what's your approach for writing second drafts (or third and fourth drafts, for that matter)? How do you turn a mess into something more structured and resembling a proper story? Also, how do you know when something's done and it's time to just stop and send it out? Thanks for your time.

Ok so you’ve done it! You’ve managed to get all the way through the first draft! Congratulations! But the work isn’t over, of course. Now you’ve got a whole pile of words and a whole ‘nother slog to turn it into something comprehensible.

Second drafts (my favourite part of the writing process) are a different type of work to the first draft. The first draft can be described as telling the story to yourself. You need the big strokes, the details of who does what and goes where, and to fumble through the plot arcs from beginning to end. The first draft has a lot of figuring out logistics so that in the second draft you can fill in detail, nuance and so that you can hone things to the best version of what they are.

Much like writing the first draft, everyone is going to approach the second draft slightly differently according to their personal preferences. But here’s how I do it.

Step one: Take a break!

Seriously. You’ve just spent a long time highly focussed on one thing, your brain needs the rest. The longer the piece the more of a break you need. For short stories I take a couple of days to a week, novellas a couple of weeks, novels, you could take a month or so. Give yourself time away.

Importantly, this is time to forget stuff about what you were working on – don’t panic when you read that by the way, you’ll still have all your notes, you’ll still have the broad strokes of what it is supposed to look like, but with any luck with some time away, you’ll have time to forget the stuff that isn’t important and that gives you trouble with the work. You’ll forget which parts you got stuck on thinking ‘I’m not good enough to write this’, or ‘that day I was writing badly, that chapter sucks!’

Take the time. Forget. Give yourself room to get excited about the project again.

Step two: Re-read!

Sit down and read the book through from start to finish. Approach it as though you’re reading a friend’s book. Take notes as you go, but only on the ‘big’ stuff. Does the plot hold together overall? Do characters make sense and ‘feel’ right? Are there plot lines, or characters that appear and then aren’t followed through? Are there obvious ‘mistakes’ that you should deal with?

Step three: Re-organise!

You might have noticed things in your read-through that seem out of order, or that if plot points were switched around or shifted on the timeline, they’d make more sense. If it’s a matter of picking up chapter seven and plunking it between chapters three and four, then do that now.

If not, then you’ll need to do more intensive reworkings. Draw up a timeline of the story from start to finish, and plot out the story in the new timeline, so that you can have an organised plan on how to go in and change stuff around.

NOTE: Do not work over your original files!

Keep a copy of the original draft. For each change that you make, create a new copy to work on. Keep track of the different versions that you’ve worked on, and BACK THEM ALL UP! You don’t want to set out reworking the whole story, realise you don’t like the new direction, and then have nothing to go back to.

Step four: Annotation!

When I say the second draft is my favourite draft, this is the step I mean. Personally, I print out the manuscript (A4, double spacing, wide margins), I staple each chapter into a booklet, and I go to town with colour coded pens and markers.

I go through chapter by chapter, and I note down the key point of the chapter, and map out the emotional and character arcs, and I jot down my ideas of how I can refine the execution of those things.

Then I go through each chapter, paragraph by paragraph, and I do the same.

What is the purpose of this paragraph?

How can it be executed in a more effective way?

What can be added to make this paragraph better?

And what can I cut that is clogging up the story?

Step five: Rewriting!

Open a new blank word document, and retype the story from your annotated copy.

Yes. Rewrite the whole thing.

You’ll end up getting creative with your wording, you’ll make connections that you hadn’t consciously thought of before, you’ll cut stuff that really isn’t important enough to bother retyping but that you would have felt bad about deleting. The rewrite is key.

Step six: Re-re-work!

At this point, you could probably do with another break from the manuscript, you could say step 6.0 is take a break, step 6.5 is re-re-work.

Just like in step one, take a step back, and read your story as though it was given to you by a friend. Take notes on any issues you find, think about how the prose flows, and how the plot works and if the characters are doing the things they should be doing.

You can go back and repeat any of the above steps if you find more problems that you want to deal with, you can even just go through this whole process a number of times until you’ve got something coherent.

Step seven: Review!

Time to get an outside perspective: ask a few people whose opinions you trust to read the manuscript. If there are particular elements of the story that you feel you need to work on more, you could ask them more pointed questions (did you feel like the protagonist’s actions in the middle bit are justified by what they experienced in the beginning? Etc), or you could ask them for their general thoughts and feelings as they read it.

Make it clear that you’re not looking for corrections on spelling, or grammar. Take note on the feedback you get, but don’t take any of it as gospel. What this is, is giving you the opportunity to see what some other people get from your story, and whether what you think it says lines up with what other people think it says, and how you feel about the convergence or divergence of those opinions.

NOTE:

While I’ve written this out as an orderly list, you will probably find that many manuscripts need more of some steps than of others. Some will probably need no re-organising, but will need a whole lot of work on the prose. Some might need complete reorganisation but the prose is fantastic already. You might find that some works need a lot added to them, while some benefit by being cut back severely. Each manuscript is going to be a different beast to work on.

All of this is what would be called ‘substantive editing’, that is, edits that involve content, structure and narrative. While it is fairly important for legibility that you’re working in as correct grammar and spelling as possible, it will not be perfect.

The second round of editing, once you have the work in pretty much the shape you want it, is line editing. Going through and giving your prose and word choices close attention, making sure that every sentence is pulling its weight.

The next round of editing, when the substantive and line edits are done, is the copy edit. You can attempt a copy edit yourself, but these are more usually done by professional editors either hired by the author, or as a part of the publishing process.

And that’s how I approach the second draft!

The new school year is slowly but surely approaching, so I wanted to make a list of some things that could help you to prepare for the new school year and make going back to school easier.

1. Start fixing your sleep schedule early We all love to sleep in late during the summer, but once school starts we cannot really stay up until 3am and still be in bed at 11am. Try to start fixing your sleep schedule at least two weeks before school starts. Start with going to bed 30 minutes earlier or sleep with the blinds open.

2. Finish all summer homework Please, please, pretty please, finish your summer homework as early as possible. You will be so happy and feel so relaxed when you don’t have to rush finishing your summer homework and pull an all-nighter during the first week.

3. Buy new school supplies No matter how much you hate school, getting new school supplies just feels so good! You don’t need to get anything fancy (or expensive), even something as little as a new pen or a notebook can make you feel so ready for school.

4. Clean your room/study space By cleaning, I don’t mean pushing your papers and notebooks to the back of the closet. Go through every single box and drawer and throw away everything that you don’t need. You will feel so much better when your room and/or study space is clean and not full of old papers and pens that don’t even work.

5. Do some pre-reading You don’t have to read the whole textbook before your class starts or do anything crazy like that. Something as simple as reading the titles and subtitles, or summaries of the chapters will help you to get an idea of what you will study during the year.
