he asks the question over a bottle of sparkling grape juice poured into wine glasses, to make the two of you feel like adults, even though you were far from it.
"if you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?"
his brown hair is falling into his eyes as he leans across the table, no smile present on his face.
his glasses had slid down his nose. he peered over them. his eyes looked sad.
you take a moment.
"maybe france. i've always wanted to go there. great bread, good fries," you respond, cracking up slightly.
he didn't laugh.
he leans back.
"con, i thought you hated french people."
you shrug, taking another sip from your glass. you didn't love grape juice, it was never your favorite, but he had insisted.
"i hate the language, not the people."
he shakes his head, the smallest hint of a smile peeking through. "what about you?" you say, resting your arms on the table between the two of you.
he looks up at you, eyes meeting yours as he smiles, properly. "france is nice."
he brings his glass to his lips, holding it like you would a mug. cradling it.
"you can't just steal my answer, fras." you roll your eyes, knocking your leg into his own. "why do you wanna go to france, hmm?"
"aren't you going there? i just wanna be wherever you are." he smiles from behind his cup, lips stained from the juice.
you wanted to reach over and touch him, kiss him, hold his face how he was holding that cup.
