The Laki eruption and the French revolution.

Iceland is a volcanic island in the north Atlantic , and is one of the few places a mid ocean spreading ridge (where new crust is created and plates are pushed apart) emerges as land. You can stand with one foot on the European plate and the other on the American one. A huge eruption began on June 8 1783 next to the edifice of Lakagígar (part of the Grimsvotn complex), with lava fountains erupting up to 1400 metres high and an enormous ash and gas plume. They exploded from a 27 Km long complex of 135 fissures with cinder cones and craters dotted along the chain. An estimated 14 cubic kilometres of magma covering 1400 square kilometres emerged from the entrails of our planet, and spewed out for the next eight months. Grimsvotn also erupted from 1783-5, adding to the gases that cooled the climate and changed the course of European history.

Yoshitaka Amano: Elevating Anime

Yoshitaka Amano (天野 喜孝) is a Japanese painter, character designer, illustrator, set & costume designer for theatre & film. He first came into prominence in the late 1960s working on the anime adaptation of Speed Racer. Amano later became the creator of iconic & influential characters, such as Gatchaman, Tekkaman, Hutch the Honeybee & Casshan. In 1982, he became a freelance artist illustrating for numerous best-selling novel series, such as The Guin Saga & Vampire Hunter D. He is probably most famous for his concept art for the video-game franchise, Final Fantasy. Since the 1990s, Amano has been exhibiting his iconic retro pop icons in galleries around the world, painting on massive aluminium panels with acrylic & automotive paint. | Previous Post
