What I Pray For

And I pray that your heart not be hardened by the hurt you will experience in your life.

People will hurt you. A boy, a girl, a parent, a sibling, a best friend, yourself. Hurt is coming your way. There is no running away from it.

Your parents will tell you that they are disappointed in you. They will say you can do better. Your mom will say she wishes you were more like your dad and your dad will say he wishes you were more like your mom. They will list all the things your older siblings have done. They will tell you to be a role model for all your younger siblings. They won’t realize how much their words mean to you and they’ll tell you that they wish you had done better, that you had tried harder.

They will hurt you.

A boy, a girl, there will be many of them. They will rip your heart out and stomp all over it. They will fight with you. They will make you feel insecure. They will cheat, they will lie and they will forget all the important dates and names. They will make you love them. He will make you feel like life can’t continue without him. She will make you feel like you can’t breathe unless she’s near. Then they will leave you.

They will hurt you.

You. You will do it to yourself, knowingly and unknowingly. You will doubt yourself. You will give up on yourself. You will make mistakes. You will make those same mistakes over and over again. You will choose the wrong people to trust, the wrong path to take and the wrong time to make life decisions. You will let your emotions get the best of you. You will disappoint yourself, you will make yourself angry and you will second guess every decisions you make.

You will hurt you.

But I pray that your heart not be hardened by the hurt you will experience in your life.

Do not let pain make you their slave. Do not let your fear of hurt become your excuse from everything. If you let your heart turn to stone you will lose the ability to feel, to love, to be loved. You must experience the hurt to understand what real compassion feels like. You cannot show mercy unless you have been in a position where you have need mercy. Everything will make you want to give in, to feeling nothing, but if you let it get to that point, you will have gone through those excruciating moments for nothing. Do not let the world do that to you. Do not allow your pain to fill your heart with hatred. Do not let bitterness steal your sweet disposition. Do not give up on a world filled with love. Life will try it’s best to make you a victim of heartache, heartbreak and the daybreak.

So I pray that your heart not be hardened by the hurt you will experience in your life.
