Freddy " The Edit" Rivera
@fredtheedit
Born in Queens New York August 24th 1971, Freddy Rivera also known as “The Edit” became drawn to the music industry as his father Freddy Sr. came home from the marines and started playing the congas and the bongos with his uncles Felix and Frankie. As a young teenager, his first record purchase that made him want to experience music in a different way and technical in nature was planet rock by Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force. The record excited him and peeked his interest in intriguing him to want to know how it was done as it was futuristic in nature at the time. As that special record peeked his interest, he suddenly was compelled into getting his DJ equipment, after listening to DJ’s like the “Animal” and “Aldo Marin” the owner of Cutting Records on the 92 KTU Paco super mix show. Freddy started throwing block parties that became jammed with over one thousand people surrounding him at the age of 13 years old. He also had a hand in wedding and your average birthday, prom parties, still at the age of thirteen. Freddy Rivera’s first shot at a vinyl record on Bark Creative Records was called “Papo” this was at the young age of 14 which was sold locally and gave him the drive to start creating what would become his distinctive art that would be sought out by many. He started to want more than just being the average DJ. And after listening to editors like Chep Nunez. Omar Santana, The Latin Rascals (Albert Cabrera & Tony Moran), Tony “Dr. Edit” Garcia, Carlos Berrios, Omar Santana, and the editor group the “Diamond Two”. Close observation of these creative and talented editors led him to want to be that editor which was more than production and DJ-ing, so then came the task of figuring it out. He scratched up all his records trying to figure out how in the world they did it, and then he opened up cassettes using scissors and scotch tape demolishing all of his cassette decks. So cassette decks were not an option as they became non-existent after opening things up and being too curious. Freddy moved onto reel to reels as he heard that’s what the professional editors used. Every day Freddy was outside playing baseball and doing everything kids do however the every day mix show that was on daily starring Latin Rascals, Albert Cabrera and Tony Moran brought him home to hear some of his favorites in action. He would record the shows and listen for hours reverse engineering what they did. Once he started realizing how it worked he started using cassettes to pause edit because he heard Albert Cabrera did it. He amazed many by showing his work as word got around that he too was doing what his predecessors were doing. A house track “Roll The Drums” on LFJ ( Luis, Freddy & John) records was a Freddy Rivera and John Chan production, which did really well in the New York City clubs. He then wanted to master the art of editing and it became his area of concentration, as you can’t learn this craft in school or from any book. Freddy Rivera met a man named Noel Rios better known as L.D. Ross who was a freestyler from Tazmania Records. Through that meeting he became the producer and editor of his first and only record known to date “Your Only Lover”. L.D. Ross became excited with Freddy’s work and told Willie Valentin all about it. Willie Valentin spoke and by invitation ended up in Freddy’s apt to check out what the big deal was. He came with Michael Bertot to the apartment in Lefferts blvd Queens and they were shocked at Freddy’s creations and he ended up editing and remixing Willie’s “One True Love Affair”. Willie opened up Artistik Records where he wanted Freddy to produce and Edit. So he produced, wrote and edited two tracks for the record label: Darlene’s “Treat Me Right” and Jevon’s “Why Did You Lie” He was the appointed to edit the entire Album Freestyle Parade Series. He ended up being part of the artistic family and performed various services for the “Freestyle Parade volumes 1-4 and the newest edition Freestyle Parade 2010. Freddy Rivera got an offer to do house music for Mic Mac records by Willie Valentin and Marvin Shlackter. So was born his production “Let There Be House” his first record commercial album on the Mic Mac label That led to a meeting with another group called “the Latin Tribe” He then produced their first album within a month’s time. Freddy Rivera went on to opening his own record label “ Digital Genesis Records” there he produced “Let There Be House” volumes 2 and 3. He featured ‘Keys To The House” for Joey “Danger” Altura as executive producer. Finally “Boongie House” distributed by Hot Distribution. In between he was running his own studio renting recording time and producing between New York City and Massachusetts. Freddy has had the pleasure of working with people like Willie Valentin,Ozzie “CT Music” , Mickey Garcia, Tony Garcia, Carlos Berrios, Willie Colon, Keith Kemper, Hens “HZ37” Zimmerman, Albert Cabrera, Imartran Voima, Bad Boy Joe, Joey “Danger” Altura, Juan Valentine,Brooklyn Zoo, James Morgan, Ty Bless, Raquela, Paula Meltinpot, Geraldo “Poze” Cotton many, many incredibly talented artists!
