Because I won’t forget you:
I had gotten together with some friends to celebrate my birthday. At one point of the night I found myself sitting and talking to a mutual friend on the patio while everyone else went to the bar across the street. I had known of him as the friend everyone worried about - who always drank too much to cope with his thoughts. He lightly mentioned that “depression is a hell of a thing” when I asked how he had been. So I agreed with him, which seemed to take him by surprise. I shared my years of dealing with it, how I felt everyday, what my thoughts were like, and how I didn’t want to live. I talked about what lead me down that road, and what I did to turn it around. He kept his eyes to the ground but nodded his head, and occasionally thanked me as I spoke. He told me about his family, his suicide attempt years ago, and the huge promotion he just got 2 days ago... and how he couldn’t be proud of that accomplishment. I asked what he would love to do in the future and he said work at an elephant sanctuary in Texas. We talked about ways to do that and how that promotion is the first step, he agreed.
I talked about his friends and how they tell me about how much they love him. He asked for a hug and quietly whispered “you’re an angel” when I hugged him. When the boys got back from the bar we had a celebratory drink for his promotion and while we were holding our drinks up he looked at me and silently mouthed “thank you”. So this one’s for you E. I’m holding you and that conversation in my heart forever. Thank you for sharing. Thank you for staying.
