My Letter to Ultraviolet (or why Ultraviolet is awful and now I’m angry about it)
Here is my problem with UltraViolet.
I had been keeping an open mind to the new look of digital copies. For years before UV was released, the standard for a digital copy was an iTunes digital copy. That always worked fine for me, I have mainly Apple devices anyway.
Then I started getting Ultraviolet digital copies, not a choice mind you, but strictly UV. I decided to give it a try.
After several uses however, I began to realize that UV doesn't work for me. The constant need for a connected device, the poor quality of the copy, the touchy nature of streaming on all the devices I use (Roku, iPad, etc.)
Unfortunately, due to exclusives and studio deals, I don't have reasonable access to several of my favorite new movies that I PURCHASED with the promise of a "digital copy." Instead I have a website that I only use in desperate situations to see a movie I want to, and half of the time, doesn't work correctly.
This isn't Netflix (I wish it were.) Netflix is a service I pay for monthly to borrow access to their content. These are movies that I paid often three times more the cost of ONE month of Netflix for the right to OWN and VIEW the films whenever I like. This is not what I have received.
And also may I add that the labels declaring a Blu Ray copy's "digital copy" as an Ultraviolet copy instead of an iTunes copy have become surrepticiously more and more hidden on the Blu Ray covers, so much so that TWICE in the last MONTH I have been fooled into buying a Blu Ray copy with an UV copy because I didn't immediately see an Ultraviolet logo.
I have one recourse, and that is to do extensive research and ensure that if a Blu Ray I am considering purchasing has an UltraViolet Digital Copy, to not buy it and buy only a digital copy directly from Apple.
It doesn't make me happy, I love buying movies and supporting studios, but as a consumer I have ONE vote, and it's with my wallet. From now on I'm punching my ballot
