“You sound a lot like my sister.. I mean heres was other reasons but she got it together enough to take custody of me when she was.. I don’t really remember.. 21 I think is when everything was all said and done so if anything I kind of get it.”

“Yeah, it’s rough. I mean, I did everything I could for her. Your sister seems to love you to do that for you. It’s not easy for raise a child when you’re still learning to do things yourself,” she smiled softly as she slowly gave the woman a hug. “And I know we just met, but you can always come to me, too.”

“Suppose it depends on the area too, so.” She nodded, Ottawa was never anything compared to New York for public transportation, at least when it came to her needs, but the buses were always good so even when she couldn’t get a ride she never minded, “Mmm, yeah, learning you’re different from all your peers is…hard, to say the least,” Though she had that drilled into her much earlier in life she still felt she understood well, “In the end what matters most is making sure she knows you love her, you know?”

“True. Smaller towns and cities need cars more than we do. We just have a lot of outside transportation that we don’t really need vehicles for,” she nodded as she took a drink of the whiskey. “Yeah. I mean, I got pregnant at fifteen. After that, people treated me like I was the plague. But I did everything I could to make sure she had a good life. And I’m proud of her. She’s my everything and she knows it.”

“It’s a shame that at this point of her life she’s going to realize that life isn’t fair and that all people weren’t born equal.” Kajal sighs, feeling empathetic towards the sixteen year old but there wasn’t anything that could be done. “Hopefully, it doesn’t make her bitter.”

“She learned life isn’t fair when she called her birth father and he said that he never wanted to speak to her again. It’s just the two of us and she’s learning that she’s not like the other kids. And I’m trying so hard to make sure she knows that she’s better than them. She’s strong and talented. And stunning, but she gets that part from me.”

“Oh, wow,” he said with a nod. He licked his lips a little bit. “Yeah, no. I think you’re doing the right thing. You could have her make a list. Like 10 reasons she needs one now or something. Not want, but need.”

“I was thinking of surprising her with a nice cruise for the two of us. Something that we can make more memories with. I’m a detective, so I don’t really get much time free since I’m always on call. I thought she would like the trip and get her mind off the car, you know?”

He nodded. “Yeah, it is,” Cam agreed with her. It was all he could do, just hope for the best and be there for her. “Why don’t they have books like that? I would love to ask that to these publishing people that one of these days,” he said with a sigh. “But it all honestly, that’s all you truly can do-trust your gut with everything and hope they’re prepared for the world.”

“They are probably scared to write about teenagers, but man, it’s rough. And I never realized how mean teen girls are until now. Violet had some problems last year. I had to have her switch schools. i saved as much as I could and she’s in private school now. Zero bully policy and she’s doing much better.” Freya sighed as she took a drink of her whiskey. “Exactly. How old is your girl again?”

“After we get you checked out.” Evan wouldn’t compromise on this. Sure, Penny looked fine, but it was always better to be safe than sorry where his daughter was concerned. Standing up and holding her easily within his arms, he looked back to the brunette closer to his age. “Is the hospital close? Do we need to take– Well, I think my car still works. Or a taxi?”

“Of course,” she smiled softly as she slowly stood up. “There’s one down the block. We can walk there. I’ll put a note on the car to say that it stays there. Just lock the doors. And I’ll make sure my daughter doesn’t get in the way. Plus, I technically have to be at the hospital because I am a cop and witnessed it,” she sighed as she looked over at her daughter. “Violet, don’t you have homework, sweetie? You need to get home. Your grandmother is going to make dinner. Just tell her I’ll be a little late. If you do everything for me, maybe I’ll set up a day where you can meet her. If her dad allows. Now go home.”

“I guess that makes sense. I guess I just knew that it was so not an option when I was 16 I can’t even imagine that thought process at that age you know what I mean?”

“I had a kid at fifteen and kicked out when I had her. A car was never in my thought process cause I was just trying to survive for my daughter.”

Kajal bit down on her bottom lip, feeling for the woman and her inability to provide the ideal birthday present for her daughter, but if she couldn’t afford it then there was nothing she could do. “Well, I grew up in Manhattan, I’m used to taxis and the subway. My first car was when I joined Boston PD.”

“That was my first car, too. Well, NYPD. Vi was too young to remember that, so she doesn’t understand we didn’t get cars when we turned sixteen. All her friends are getting them, and I know she knows I can’t get her one, it doesn’t change she wants one, you know?”

“Well that sucks for her. She should be happy to be getting an education like that and she is in the city literally no one needs a car at any age, but definitely at 16.” She sounded old but Addie had lived without and loved not having the responsibility. “Well I only had my sister and I didn’t die without a car.”

“She’s thankful for her education. Trust me. Every sixteen year old wants a car. I didn’t get to wish for that, but it’s a normal thing. I know she will accept we can’t, but I still feel bad just because she’s my little girl and it’s always hard to say no,” the brunette furrowed her brows at the younger woman, giving a shrug.

“Right? It would help a ton of new people who’re about to have babies to understand how to raise children and not freak out every chance you get,” Cam said with a little chuckle. “I keep hoping that it’ll go away soon, but I don’t think it will. Just gotta trust my instincts and hope that everything I taught her she’ll incorporate in her own life.”

“I need a book on how to deal with a teenager. I think that’s the book that is heavily overlooked. This is by far so much harder than an actual baby,” she smiled as she took a drink. “That’s all you can do. Trust your gut and hope for the best. As long as you are there for them, that’s really all that’s important.”

“I think so, too.” He concluded aloud with the seat belt being the cause. Teeth grinding into his lip once more. Contradictory answers then came once she addressed them both about coming along with them to the hospital. He didn’t want to put the woman out and her… sister–? They looked so similar but so close in age; out anymore than he already had. “Can I touch it if you come..?” Penny speaking in reference to the badge. “Honey… I’m sure we put her out enough, but…” It was a really kind offer. “Do you know of one close by? We’re not really new but, we haven’t had to go to one, yet and I’m ashamed to admit I don’t know their locations yet, in the city.”

Freya was hoping that her daughter wouldn’t come up to the child, but soon enough the teenager was right behind her, cooing at the toddler. “Oh my god. You’re so cute! We are totally free to help her out, right mom? We can show you where it is. It’s right by my school.” Hearing the voice, the older woman turned back to Violet, shaking her head. “Vi, please. Take a few steps back. Don’t scare her,” she bit her lip as she moved her eyes back to the child. “You can touch it all you want if your daddy says it’s okay.”

“I definitely did not get a car when I was 16, but honestly, a lot of my classmates did. It seems more the norm these days, but a car in New York? Really? There’s a decent argument for it in any other part of the country, but I don’t even want to think about the nightmare of driving in this city at 23, let alone 16.”

“I drive, but it’s part of my job, so I needed to learn for that. She’s in a private school and all her friends got one, so she thinks that she should get one, too. But I told her that sharing rides saves us on gas,” she smiled as she took a drink. “Driving in the city isn’t that terrible. You get used to it and learn to adjust.”

I think the sexiest thing on anybody is intelligence. I respect somebody who has a brain and wants to use it more than a pretty face and status.

“No one needs a car in the city anyway, there’s no point. I don’t even know how to drive.” That had literally never stopped her from driving, but it was a good point none the less. “No, I didn’t know anyone who did. I mean given I grew up with street rats, but.. yeah no.”

“No one needs a car, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t want one. In her mind, that’s like the best sweet sixteen gift that could ever happen. It doesn’t help I have her in a private school because I wanted her to get a good education and literally all her friends have been getting cars. She doesn’t realize that her friends have two parents that get paid. We just have me,” Freya shrugged as she took a drink.
