Sword Cane

Dated: fourth quarter 19th century

Culture: Spanish

Medium: wood, metal

Measurements: 34 in. (86.4 cm)

Markings: Engraved on sword: “A.H.P.” and engraved on both sides of sword: “TOLEDO”

Apart from their obvious functionality, canes were an elegant accessory in the 19th century, when the afternoon promenade gave members of the fashionable set occasion to display their finery and genteel manners.

This gentleman’s novelty cane conceals an elaborately engraved and monogrammed sword blade. While technically functional as a sword, the absence of a proper grip and guard make the cane more suited to braggadocio than actual dueling.

Another such gadget cane in the Brooklyn collection contains a liquor vial and tiny drinking glass. Equivalent women’s sticks sometimes held snuff bottles, powders vials, or other cosmetic materials.

Loki looked up from the book he was reading when he heard his twin enter, a smile creeping on his face when he saw her own. He closed the book and stood “Of course, Freyja, I’d love to!” he said, wondering which trick mother taught her.

Freyja grinned and held up her hands, muttering a phrase before facing her hands out towards the curtains that were hanging from a set of windows. There was a concentrated look on her face as a gust of air blew through the curtains and into the room before dying down as she looked back at Loki, her grin spreading across her face again.

Headcanons

By the time she was in her late teens-to Asgardians anyway-Freyja was talented enough with fire and air related spells that she really didn't need any kind of incantation. However she still to this day has a lot of difficulty doing water or earth related spells. She's also pretty good with tracking spells, but they do take her a bit if people are shielded.

Loki shook his head “No, don’t apologize, you were within your right.” he said, hating the taste of the words on his tongue. “I… I’m pretty sure if I could do it again I wouldn't change anything, I was pretty much destined to end up endangering Asgard on some level, destroying New York, everything. I don’t think I could change it and I’m really not willing to. I wouldn't have seen the truth in everything if I hadn't and I like it better than the lie I lived in.
