My own dirty laundry: I have been guilty of whitewashing Merrill before, as I didn't know she was in DA:O so I used the DA2 render for colorpicking, from this I need everyone to learn that sometimes the whitewashing isn't done by malice but from a place of lack of knowledge.

Ok so I can see what you're doing here and it's a decent enough thought but if the goal here is to combat whitewashing in fandom spaces this is. Not a good communal resource to just throw out there. It's one thing if your personal style frequently uses desaturated and muted colors but it's another thing entirely when you're recommending desaturated colors as a resource for other people on a post about preventing whitewashing in a fandom space.

Here is a post I made literally yesterday addressing this exact thing.

Here is a post from @creatingblackcharacters about why we shouldn't be going with these desaturated 'ashy' tones. Especially!! Not!!! For Davrin and Isabela!!! And another with a good resource for much more realistic skin tones. And yet another just more generally on whitewashing(oh hey look there's our boy Alistair!).

And here's my personal redo of the base skin tones that you picked above. Some I had to just find better screenshot references for because the ones you pulled for Neve and Davrin had them in frankly terrible lighting that did not do them justice.

I'm also painfully aware that you're good friends with the person I called out for whitewashing literally this morning and this could not more obviously have been made in reaction to that. I'd also like to point out that Ouiser's whitewashing could not have been done in ignorance and I pointed out exactly why in my reblog of their art by color picking nearly entirely from screenshots from Their Playthrough.

So if we're putting this post back into it's original context, which I'm sure the majority of people reblogging it are completely unaware of, it starts to come off more like racism apologia, and being rather passive aggressive because I wasn't 'nice' enough for you when I called your buddy on their blatant whitewashing. Which, in my personal opinion, is in incredibly poor taste. So I'm just going to reiterate the last few points I made on my reblog of Ouiser's art:

This is in incredibly poor taste especially when you're someone who pays lip service to the concept of being anti-racist.

It is your responsibility as an artist to do the work and put in the effort to make sure you aren't pulling shit like this.

These are colorpicked from in-game textures and its not "my artstyle"?? I even edited the Isabella ones because the model IS a bit ashy!

I also don't understand why you are making yourself sound so rude in your post because yes, my post was a reaction to your reblog, BECAUSE I AGREE WITH YOU, JACKASS? the "i feel like being nice" is because I didn't want to make a demanding post about people using the palettes, -> I <- PERSONALLY didn't want to sound snotty.

And yes i am friend's with Ouiser and even gave them more sources on coloring POC, I don't know WHY you are bringing it up, but since you brought it up I can tell that this whole reblog is in bad faith, OH the horror of me being friends with... someone you called out ? like ok? this isn't high school, i agreed with you and made a resource for other artists, what is YOUR issue?

Now a brown person can't make a resource because they agreed with you that YEAH the colorpicking off of screenshots is bad because i'm mutuals with someone?

In response to your "the colors for Neve and Davrin are terrible and ashy!" they literally are not, I've drawn Neve and Davrin with these colors and they look perfectly fine and even sometimes DARKER, Example:

Yes, I was aware they were color picked from the in-game textures, I meant generally speaking the art you post tends to be in muted tones overall, so within that context specifically, it works fine For You. I honestly think your art fucks severely, and looks great.

But the point I was trying to make, was that picking from in game textures isn't enough when it comes to trying make sure you aren't whitewashing characters, which one of the links I shared earlier illustrates well. Someone else left a comment there that I believe explains it well:

"This is why as neat as palettes based on screenshots are it's always really difficult to get an accurate color without a wide sample. iirc the palettes that just dropped are from the models without any lighting whatsoever - which would be why the color based on the screenshots looks out of place compared to the others I think."

The thing is that for the art we make it's important to keep in mind the context in which we are placing the characters, especially when throwing out resources for community use. Those palettes slapped on a blank white background look washed out/ashy and therefore aren't actually realistic skintones to provide as a resource for fandom art. Most people who post fanworks are amateurs who likely haven't had much education in lighting/coloring/shading and are liable to just take those base colors and slap them on a flat colored sketch with little-to-no shading or lighting and a not much of a background and call it a day(Also very notably specifically what is referenced in all of my provided examples of whitewashing). Which!!! There's nothing wrong with posting art unshaded character art with little-to-no background! Have your fun!!! But if that's the case it's important to keep the fact that how colors look/are percieved by the human eye varies WILDLY depending on context! And given it's already a known common issue of fan artists drawing characters of color with skintones that are too ashy/washed out/etc, it's better to err on the side of caution.

I don't think that's his issue to deal with. and of course they're gonna look ashy on a white background, THATS WHY YOU SHOULDNT USE A WHITE BACKGROUND. He wasn't providing an IN DEPTH POC COLORING GUIDE he showed the raw skin tones. If someone uses them poorly that's not... his fault? He never said it was a full coloring guide, he just provided the palettes. Same as using those skin tone cubes. I don't think he should be expected to throw down his entire knowledge on lighting and color theory for a simple resource.
