The Edge of Night
Chapter Three
"So it's decided," Gandalf chuckled beside me, "Mellimeldisiel will accompany us on our trip."
"Melly," I said harsher than intended. I was still on a high from yelling at Boromir. "You can call me Melly," I offered with a forced smile.
"Right," Gandalf said. "Melly, of course."
I shifted awkwardly in place and looked at the other eight members of my new fellowship. I scanned each one over. They looked just as uncomfortable with each other as I was with them.
"So..." I said as I rocked on the balls of my feet, "What's everyone's names?"
"I'm Merry, and this is Pippin," a dirty blonde hobbit said to me. He pointed to the hobbit to his left, who looked as if he could be his twin. I nodded at the two of them.
"I'm Aragorn," a dark haired man said.
"As you must have gathered, I'm Gimli. It's a pleasure to meet yeh," the dwarf said. I smiled at his accent.
"Well you seem to know my name by know," Boromir said with a dumb smile on his face. I ignored him and turned to Gandalf.
"And you're Gandalf," I said, pointing at him. He nodded, clearly surprised that I had picked up on his name. I turned to the other two hobbits, "and you are?"
"I'm Samwise, or Sam. And this is Master Frodo. He holds the ring," the larger of the two said, holding his hand out for me to shake. As I shook it I glanced down at Frodo, expecting the same politeness. When I realized he wasn't going to shake my hand, I blushed, a little embarrassed. Maybe he was just shy. I quickly turned to the last one in the group, the elf.
"My name is Legolas," the blonde haired elf said in a charming way. He was quite handsome, I had to admit. But, then again, all elves were.
"Nice to meet you," I said with what I assumed looked like a dorky smile. Legolas smiled back, out of politeness.
"Well, let's go then," I said, wanting to get out of there before I embarrassed myself further. The group must have agreed because they all started to walk towards the entrance of Rivendell.
When we made it to the gate, we turned to face Elrond.
"Good luck," was all he said as he waved us off. I had a feeling he didn't think we would be returning.
Frodo lead the way, although I thought I heard him ask Gandalf for directions. This was going to be a long journey, especially without horses. Just as the thought hit me, my mind wandered to Norman.
"Wait!" I called out to the group. Before I could see how annoyed they were at me, I rushed over to the horse stables. When Norman saw me, he instantly lightened up. False hope, I thought.
"Hi buddy," I whispered while petting him. "I'm gonna be gone for a little bit, okay? But I'll be back. I promise. Be good for the elves," I said as I kissed his nose. He licked my face and it broke what was left of my heart. He was the best horse I ever had. "Bye," my voice trailed off.
A single tear ran down my cheek as I left the only bit of family I had left. I wiped it away before I caught up with the boys. I knew they'd make fun of me for it.
A/N: Sorry this is so slow, I had to set the scene :/ it'll pick up soon!

The Edge of Night
Chapter Two
I rode Norman for what felt like years. In reality, it was only about a weeks journey, but it felt so much longer. Although the forest was enchantingly beautiful, it dragged on for miles. After a while, I got bored of looking at the same shades of green leaves everywhere I turned. I made it a habit to only stop twice a day to feed myself and the horse. Being part elf came in handy when it came to rest stops because it meant I didn't need as much sleep as the common human. I only stopped to sleep when I knew Norman was getting drowsy. Within two weeks time, I had made it to Rivendell.
I directed Norman to the stables on the outskirts of the enormous place. Rivendell was peaceful in most affairs and left their gates open to visitors. I made sure my horse was comfortable and gave him a few gentle caresses on his sleek, black mane.
"Be good, Norm. I'll see you soon," I whispered into the giant creature's ear. I hoped I'd see him soon, because he was the closest thing I had to a friend now.
"Can I help you?" a voice from behind me spoke.
"I'm fine, thank you," I said back as I turned to see who had spoken to me. It was a tall elf with long, straight brown hair. He had what resembled an upside down crown on his head. I assumed he was royalty.
"Very well" the elf said with a kind smile.
"Actually," I began. "Could you possibly tell me who I could speak to about staying here for a while?" I asked, slightly embarrassed at how groggy my voice came out. It must have been from the lack of water from the trip.
"That would be me" the elf said. "My name is Elrond and one might say I'm kind of important around here."
I immediately recognized the elf's name. My mother was originally from Rivendell, and as a young girl she would tell me stories of Lord Elrond, the leader of her home. When it clicked in my mind just how important he was, I immediately bowed.
"I- I'm so sorry sir. I mean Lord. Lord sir," I awkwardly managed to spit out.
"It's quite alright," Elrond said with a slight chuckle. His smile made me feel warm. "But tell me, dear, what is your name? And why are you here in Rivendell?"
"Mellimeldisiel, or Melly. And, well, I'm here because I have no where else to go. I fled my village at my father's command and now I'm alone," I told the elf, with a slight break in my heart at the mention of my father.
"Say no more, Melly. A person in need of help is always welcome here. Please, follow me and I'll show you to a room."
********
A week went by since I had arrived at Rivendell. All of the elves were exceptionally kind and caring towards me. The room I was staying in was elegant and cozy, and I felt right at home. That is, minus my family. I missed them more and more everyday. I made sure to visit Norman out in the stables everyday and sneak him some lembas bread. He was still my only friend here, so most of my conversations were about grass and how good of a boy he was. Although I was still unhappy with the recent events, I felt comfortable in Rivendell. I was starting to get used to it and I rarely got lost in the long hallways anymore.
Since I had no one to talk to, I decided to take walks by the waterfall every now and then. I had just put on a fresh pair of leggings and an olive green vest when I began my walk. As I came to a small clearing in the otherwise overgrown plants, I heard arguing. Without being seen, I crouched beside the nearest tree and strained my ears to hear.
"BOROMIR," I heard someone shout as the sky turned gray. I covered my ears from the loud noise.
I peaked around the tree to see what was going on. There were so many people in this small area. At first glance, I thought they were all men and elves, but then I noticed a small, chubby man with red hair.
"A dwarf" I exhaled without realizing. Suddenly all eyes were on me.
"Melly?" I heard a familiar voice say. It was Elrond, staring at me with wide eyes. "How much of this have you heard?"
I froze on the spot. I didn't know whether to make something up or not. Lying may not be in my best interest, especially since Elrond had just shown me such kind hospitality and I didn't want to screw up the good thing I had going with him. The truth was my best option, but what was the truth? I wasn't paying much attention to their conversation anyways because I was looking over all of the elves, men and dwarves.
"Not much," I squeaked out, trying to regain my posture as I came out from behind the tree. "In fact, I'll just be going now."
"Not so fast," said an unfamiliar voice as speaker grabbed my shoulder. "We could use a woman on this trip, Elrond" the man said.
I looked up to see an old man with long gray hair holding onto me. He had the longest beard I had ever seen, and that's saying something considering where I'm from.
The Boromir character spoke next. "That's hilarious, Gandalf. Truly funny. Anyways, let's get these hobbits suited up for the journey."
I stared blankly at this man I didn't even know. What an asshole.
"I think you underestimate the strength of a woman, Boromir," Gandalf said, lightening his grip on my shoulder. I peered up at Elrond, unsure of what was even happening. He caught on to my confusion and held up his hand to silence the party.
"Mellimeldisiel, this is what we call a 'fellowship'. These nine men have volunteered to go on a dangerous journey to deliver something to Mordor. It seems as though you're wanted as well," Elrond said in a voice that held no humor.
Someone let out a fake cough. We all turned to see who it was. The same chubby dwarf that I had spotted earlier was standing with his arms crossed on his chest.
Elrond let out a laugh. "Sorry, I meant these two men, one elf, one dwarf, one wizard, and four hobbits. Happy Gimli?" he said in a sarcastic tone. Gimli grunted in reply.
"Are you all mad? You can't possibly be serious about allowing a woman to accompany us on our journey," Boromir said. I hated this guy already.
I let my short-temper get the best of me as I aggressively removed Gandalf's grip from my shoulder. I marched towards Boromir before exploding on him.
"Not only are you a blind moron for thinking I'm a woman," I said, pointing towards my elf-like ears, "but you're also a misogynistic rat!" I spat at him. I shot my angry face at him, this time, however, it was far from fake.
"It's quite remarkable that you walk around saying foul things about women as if one would ever want to touch you, let alone listen to your shit!" I let out in the most dramatic way I could muster.
Boromir began to speak but I cut him off. "And finally, although I don't know any of you, or where you're going, I've decided that I will join you. Just to spite you, Boromir." I stated. I had to hold myself back from sticking my tongue out at him like a child.
All eyes were on me at this point. I'd been the center of attention in the past ten minutes more than I had been in my whole life.
The Edge of Night
Chapter One
"Is this a joke?" I groaned at my father as he began to open my windows and let in the morning light. I could feel the sun on my face and debated on whether to open my eyes.
"I don't joke," father said in his usual playful tone.
The man was just as sarcastic as I was, which was probably where I got it from. Then again, my mother was an elf, so I knew she couldn't have passed down any sort of comedic trait. Everyone knew that elves weren't great with sarcasm. There was one time where my father made her cry because he called her stupid as a joke.
"C'mon Mel, you have to get up."
"It's literally six in the morning! Come back in three hours, then try talking to me," I barked before flipping on my left side to avoid the rays of sun gleaming into my eyesight. I heard my father's footsteps clanking heavily towards my bed. As soon as the footsteps stopped, I felt my quilt being torn off of my body.
"What the hell, Dad," I said as I sat up. "What's so important that you had to do that for?"
I looked up at my father's eyes, trying my best to pull off a face that made it seem like I was actually angry. I'd been trying to master the fake-pissed face for years now. As my eyes met his, my face instantly fell. The cheerful brown that usual surrounded his pupils was dark and clouded.
"What's wrong?" I asked hesitantly. He gazed at me for a split second before turning his head away.
"Nothing. It's nothing. But I need you to get dressed in your riding clothes and meet me downstairs as soon as possible, got it?" he said as he turned for the door. I scrambled to my feet and followed him. I watched as he walked out of my room without a glance back. What was going on? Usually my father was the funny, carefree one while my mother was the strict one. I took off my pajamas in silence while my thoughts traveled. Why does he need me so early? And why do we need horses? I shrugged to myself and went to my closet. The faster I changed and got down there, the faster I would find out what I'm suppose to be doing.
I finished buttoning my vest and slipped my riding boots on in one motion. I walked over to the door of my bedroom and turned the handle. As I got to the stairs, I saw my mother in the doorway of her and father's room. She gave me a small wave and I smiled back. I didn't know why she was waving to me but I didn't question it. Instead, I turned and went down the stairs, two at a time. I saw my father standing out by our stable and went out to him.
"There you are, Mel," father spoke in a whisper.
"Why are we whispering?" I impatiently said back in a low murmur. Instead of answering, my father walked over to our large black horse, Norman, and began packing his saddle pockets with food, canteens, and medical supplies. Curiously, I followed closely behind and put a hand to Norman's face. He gave me a soft lick on the palm and I giggled.
"Quiet," my father said sternly.
"Ok what's going on, seriously," I stated firmly, crossing my arms. My father turned to face me.
"Listen closely, ok, I don't have time to repeat myself. Our village is being watched carefully by those who are friendly with the evilness that attacked years ago. Long story short, it's not safe in Lake-Town anymore. You must ride to Rivendell and find safety among the elves. I don't know how much time is left before we are under attack so you must go now," my father said with emphasis on the word now, never meeting my eyes.
"What about you? And mum?" was all I could think of. I looked up to find my father with his eyes closed.
"There isn't enough supplies. All three of us wouldn't make it to Rivendell together which is why you must go alone."
"I won't leave you!" I shouted. I had forgotten that we were apparently being watched so I lowered by voice before saying "You're all I've got."
"I know, dear, I know. But if you want any chance at survival you need to do as I say. Mother and I will try our best to meet up with you. But for now, you're on your own," he said in a different voice than I've ever heard from him. It was filled with sadness, which my father rarely felt. He picked me up and put me on the back of the horse. "Go," he whispered and started to turn. I put my hand on his shoulder.
"We'll meet again, I know it."
"I love you, Mellimeldisiel," were the last words I heard from my father before riding off into the forest.
A/N: This is my first fic ever so please be nice. Also please comment and tell me if you like it????
The Edge of Night - Father's Orders (on Wattpad) http://w.tt/1XC0rwi Bard the Bowman's third daughter, Mellimeldisiel (Melly), happens to be half human and half elf. She quickly finds herself being thrown into a quest she never thought she'd have to deal with. The battles with orcs seem far easier for her to handle than trying to fit in with the nine men she's traveling with. The worst one is the elf, mainly because he's so freaking cute. Loosely based off of the Lord of the Rings storyline with a few characters from the Hobbit.
PLEASE CHECK THIS OUT IT WOULD MEAN ALOT
