Day 2: #Oneirataxia: The inability to differentiate between dreams and reality. . The first month or so of pregnancy. I felt nauseous and I was exhausted, but otherwise, I could not feel you physically there. The #ultrasound showed you kicking away, absolutely beating up your umbilical cord and having a great time, but I felt none of that. It was so hard to convince myself you were there. . Today I dropped off my daughter in daycare, went home and finished my breakfast, then spent the rest of the morning outside in my backyard, trimming back overgrown bushes so that my baby grass would be able to have some sun. On the other side of the earth, people were fighting for their home; the one that is at the same time also my home, but not at all my home. . Hong Kong was to be under British rule until 1997. In June of 1989, the Tiananmen Square Massacre happened (thousands of unarmed students demanding democracy were killed by the Chinese military). This confirmed a lot of the fear and apprehension Hong Kong had about being ruled by China. It was after the Massacre that my parents decided to not "wait and see" how the Chinese will rule, and we immigrated to Canada. . Almost exactly thirty years later, 1/7th of Hong Kongers (that's more than 1 million people) are in the streets fighting for democracy again. Peacefully, because that's how Hong Kongers are (re: the Umbrella Movement, where they cleaned up after themselves and would do their homework while on the streets). There are rumours that some protesters were hired to incite riots, which in turn gives police a reason to respond with violence. I have seen videos of the police and the riots, and it does not match the Hong Kong that my parents have told me about. . I am grateful that my parents fled to Canada for my future.
