A year ago, I made this blog thinking that I’d maybe getting 50 followers at the most. I really didn’t think that anyone would notice Annika or take an interest in her, but here we are a year later and I just passed 600 followers. I honestly can’t believe that you’re all here and words cannot express how happy I am that you guys seem to love Annika as much as I do. I can have the worst day ever, log on here, and you guys instantly make my mood a thousand times better. And it means so, so much to me that you all love my dorky little songbird and have taken an interest in her. So I was thinking about Carmilla’s relationship with Vordenburg’s ancestors while I rewatched 2.36

In season one, we learn that Carmilla is eighteen when she is murdered at a ball. It’s never explicitly stated by who.

In Vordenburg’s account of his ancestors’ relationship with Carmilla, his great great grandfather was deeply in love with her and they were promised to marry, which implies that it was consensual. When Carmilla finished her transformation, Vordenburg’s great great grandfather (fucking hell, I’m just gonna call him VG3) hid her away to protect her from anyone that would harm her. Instead, she murdered VG3 and his entire family.

In Mattie and Carmilla’s account, it’s revealed that VG3 actually stole Carmilla’s still-deceased body and locked it away. Mattie calls VG3 a necrophiliac, which could simply refer to him being obsessively in love with Carmilla to the point of grave-robbing her body, or could imply something much more. In either case, VG3 was pretty sick.

In 2.36, Vordenburg states, “I bet you wish you’d married my great great grandfather now,” to which Carmilla replies, “I preferred dying.”

That was the part that made me do a double take and made me start thinking about all of this.

Vordenburg believes VG3 was engaged to Carmilla. And the thing about stories passed down through generations is that, even when they’re distorted like they obviously have in Vordie’s case, there’s still some lick of truth to them.

This is all speculation and theory, but here’s my thought process:
