(With Yugi becoming a vampire too, it isn't like he can be Anzu's free blood bag anyway. Unless he still has normal human blood because he's a hybrid?)

Boi am I late for this reply (and every other one lately. Sorry about that, real life is out for my blood. And my family's. And my teeth too. Good news tho, I can now accurately describe what getting braces feels like: ouch)

Yugi is simply going through it in this au. I think the fact that his problems in this one are more on the realism side makes it worse to watch.... Maybe we should throw him back into being forgotten and daily fighting shadows and monsters or sm, at least then he had joey to lighten up his mood

Anzu my beloved queen, she's been a bit on my mind lately (tho rn my mind is empty) that being said, omg??? Your view of her is actually perfect??

Honestly, even in my mind she doesn't feel evil evil, but rather a terrifying antagonist due to her view on life. She doesn't go out of her way to spread misery or particularly enjoy it (looking at yami bakura and marik rn). She's just a really powerful old vampire who is also very hungry, can ya blame her for that? My client is innocent, we don't care about the murders please

But also yeah, now that you mention it, yugi could either be her blood bag, or not, due to Yami being there. I kinda imagine that, due to him still being halfway human, she would be able to drink from him, but unlike when she does other humans (aka suck them dry, cause hunger) she won't be able to go too far before yami show himself and stop her, which will annoy her at first most likely, but also make it so that yugi is the only (half) human that she could possibly get closed to without accidentally killing him once she gets inevitably hungry (which. Now that I'm thinking about it. Maybe she has a slight teenie tiny trauma related memory of this exact situation. Maybe with someone named miho even :))). )

I think the vampires getting any type of relationship with yugi will help them remember a small bit of their humanity. Just a bit. Hopefully enough

Anyways since she's powerful and yami is (was) powerful, I imagine they would've known each other, which can make things complicated depending on their previous relationship

She could also be one of his only clues as to remembering who he used to be (i imagine since he only has half or even less of his original bug numbers, and refuses to regenerate them via eating yugi whole, he will have memory issues too, tho not as severe as in canon. Still fun to toy with though)

I also LOVE the idea of these two first acting like exes when they meet (and maybe after), even tho I know for a fact they never dated and would never dream of it. It just sounds so funny, especially when it will likely leave yami, with his spotty memories, wondering, then shuddering (yugi's humanity is robbing on him, and a blood covered apathetic mosquito is not exactly what you want in a partner lol)

But back to anzu and yugi, I really love whatever weird friendship they will build up, especially since anzu in this au, to me at least, seems a bit, like, apathetic? Or as if she is just living her life passively. Not a bad life but not a good one, just feels like she is barely tethered to the things around her for the most part? I think having yugi become something of a tether to her would be nice

+ since he is still half human, I think she, out of anyone, would have the best ability to locate him (same with mokuba if she met him enough, which would help immensely once the whole kidnapping arc begins)

A while ago I did some research about mosquitos, and apparently they have an amazing sense of smell, not for blood, but rather for this substance we excretes with our sweat called the lactic acid, which some people excretes more than others, and it's usually produced most when under heavy exercise (cause it's produced when cells break down carbohydrates for energy under low amount of oxygen) but also it's a bit higher for people who caffeinate too much or drink lots of energy drink apparently. And like. Yugi is a college student in this au. You know the drill.

Anyways the mosquitos have receptors on their antennas that makes them smell it very well, they can detect you up to like 40 meters away or sm, and add on it the fact that bugs in this world's au have evolved, and that being a vampire increases your bug abilities, you get a really good human detector from anzu, and maybe if she spent enough times around a human without ending up killing them she will be able to start to differentiate between those smells

I imagine that the smell gets weaker when yami takes over tho, which will be helpful for the first disastrous meet up, but will be really annoying for anzu later on when it's her primary way of detecting her not-quite-friend-but-friend-shaped-human

Honestly you're so right about her, the way she will act around yugi will definitely resemble a dog around their herd, or someone around their pet at some point. A bit dehumanising but still as caring as she could manage in her situation for now. I love that so much omg

Anyways!! Do not worry do NOT tell me your art fight account, I wasn't trying to ask for it don't worry+ anonymity in this friendship I feel is like, something really important for the both of us? Or like, something really comforting? I don't know about you but I'm someone who likes it most when there is a barrier between me and the public, and even my friendships I kinda seem to have a tough time opening up to it. I also have like, three different accounts or more in most other media I have, cause I like the freedom of not being perceived by someone I specifically know, u know? And I'm assuming it's something a bit similar to you? If it is, then that's a bit comforting cause I tried to explain it to a friend before and I don't think they got it (they were still very supportive about it tho! Love them so much) and I kinda felt a bit bad about it cause like, all they wanted was to see my yugi au stuff on Tumblr, and I don't mind showing it to them, but showing them the account for some reason was tougher, even tho I wanted to share it with them

We ended up going back and forth like that for like a week before I decided to just show them the content but not the blog lol. They were very very understanding and made sure I don't feel pressured to do anything and honestly I'm just so lucky to have such friends <333

I'm in comedy but the only reason I participated this year too was to do revenge for last year. I ended up getting attacked twice tho so now I'm scrambling to revenge them too, cause no way I'm breaking my perfect streak of revenges just cause of internship or studying, how lame would that be?

ALSO WE HAVE YET TO DECIDE WHAT TYPE OF BUG YAMI SHOULD BE???

On one hand, the idea of bugs changing and evolving in this world so that more types are drinking blood is interesting, on the other hand it will complicate some stuff and kinda feels like a cop out or sm. But also maybe we can have bug hybrids between one that doesn't drink and one that does?? Or should we just go with the "bugs are now different" route and simply try to plan and research for it to the best of our abilities? I feel like many bugs, if starved enough, would drink blood for resources? And in this world where the bugs ecosystem is kinda falling apart due to humans (first sign of an upcoming apocalypse btw), then more will likely at least try to drink blood, which would catch some humans by suprise, because they only thing of blood drinking bugs when they think of vampires, making it so more new types of vampires are starting to emerge at an increasing frequency due to the people not really watching out for those other types

Which is ironic, because in the end, it's the humans who brought this upon themselves, you know? And also would explain why the government is discreetly making the public fear and hate all types of bugs, even the ones that don't typically drink blood, because they know they will soon start to, hence all the chemicals being pumped into the streets and all

The governments failed the world and are now making sure no one learns the truth.

This will also make kaiba having such distrust and conspiracies against the government make more sense too. He IS right that the government is relishing in the public fear of bugs of all kinds, that not a single vampire has been officially found or shown to the public in over 50 years despite the development of technology (because they are catching bugs that shouldn't be drinking blood but are), but he also didn't account for the fact that two things can be true at once, hence why now mokuba is the caretaker of this new vampire

If we do decide on the route of other bugs drinking blood thing, then maybe we can even change some of the bug type for each character?

The old and ancient ones should still stick to bugs that already drink blood tho, so anzu is still a mosquito, and marik and yami bakura are still whatever it is that they are

That would mean yami is an old blood drinking bug too tho, so our choices for him is still limited ig. Darn it why couldn't the ancient Egyptians play around with chemicals more 😔💔💔💔

Stop making penicillin guys, go test warfare chemicals on bugs and rodents already. Especially near the young Pharaoh please

The way yugi's fear of joey was still existing in the fight against shadi, the fact that yami would do what he does mostly to protect the people you cares about, the fact that yami and yugi (but especially Yami) couldn't distinguish himself, thoughts and emotion, from yugi's, makes me believe that he 100% was feeling what yugi was feeling and thinking, and thought it was his own thoughts and feelings, and had enough confidence and sense of justice (?) to act on them, while yugi kept it caged in the deepest part of his heart. It just makes sense

Also 💚 anon, you took my silly insect vampire idea and turned it horror coded, so I had to retaliate 😌

It's ok if you don't have any new thoughts on this au! (also?? The coffin thing? I didn't even think about that vampire trait, but now that you mentioned it, it does make me think a bit.

You know how in several versions of how insect vampires came to being in our au, it essentially ends up in the person's death? Or at least their bodies? And how even if it's just an insect hive moving from one body to the other, some trait of the new body still emerges?

The insect vampires are still kinda human, with human knowledge and trait and fashion and such. So. Why would the vampires, in this au, feel the urge to sleep in a coffin?

Because somewhere buried very deep down, they are mourning their own death. Because they aren't alive anymore, and some part of them, some instinct, feels the need to follow nature's rule in whichever way possible, and if that meant sleeping (the closest thing to a death state) in a coffin in a pitch black room, then that's what they will do.

I wonder if that's also why they like moving at night better, because no sun touches a body buried six feet under. I wonder if that means that even artificial light kinda annoys them? Like, the vampires just like being in the dark, especially when about to sleep. Maybe. Idk. I think it's an interesting idea, how their survival instincts are fighting with their nature following instinct, you know?)

Also about pesticides, I think it's less that new bugs will emerge, and more that bugs will evolve and become resistant. Which is horrifying to think about, personally.

That being said, this world IS funky, and due to the whole prejudice against bugs, maybe new species will appear and old ones disappear? Idk, we already have vampires in this au, let's throw new bugs in. Just for fun. (I say while scratching my skin just from thinking about bugs)

Also, for allergies, due to the newer (and likely more potent, in some cases at least) types of pesticides, and how it's mandatory to spray them every once in a while (whether cause the people hate bugs or believe in vampires or anything else,) the personalized masks idea is now back online babyyyy

At least during the week the pesticides are spread, cause the spray takes a while before going away and all, and it can't be healthy to breath in all these chemicals, especially since they keep evolving it to match the evolution of the bugs around it

I imagine summer is the most hated season for this reason, too many bugs (relatively. Still much less than the real world) and too many chemicals in the air. Probably will be known as the spraying season or sm lol

The interesting thing about the whole spraying season thing, is that people don't really know much about insect vampires, and don't know how they come to being, and the government should know that most vampires have a way to escape or just blend in by wearing masks. so this whole thing isn't really about killing/ limiting vampires, as much as it is just a hate letter to bugs (and maybe a slight irritant to vampires. The effects are less with masks and all, but there are still effects, you know? Maybe that's why they've been switching vessels every few decades lately? Trying to find a body that's less allergic to the chemicals? If so then there is some sense of cruelty in that, because unless their bodies are deathly allergic at simple contact, then they are killing and stealing people's bodies for what's essentially the equivalent of a spring pollen allergy)

I think something that's quite interesting in this au is just how much people fear a find bugs disgusting, likely from early conditioning and childhood stories and such. It could raise some ethical questions about the whole thing too. Also scientific ones too cause usually the early steps of an apocalypse is the lack of bugs. That's a whole ecosystem you're trying to erase buddy 😭😭😭

I don't know much about the latter so I'll probably stick to the first one, cause what the people of that world are doing is essentially the same thing the bad vampires are doing too? Killing smaller weaker beings without second thought, since clearly they are the "higher" ones of the two

💚 anon, were you the type to step on an ant as a kid? Light a fire at a colony? Squish a bug that accidentally got into your home? Be relieved once you see their dead bodies, knowing they are gone now? What about the difference from killing a bug that entered your house, and one that's out in the wild? What about the aesthetically pleasing bugs, did you look at a butterfly one day in awe while stepping on a worm at the same time?

I think, cruelty, can kinda be ignored when done to things that can't scream loud enough for us to hear

Then again I also kill bugs that enter my house lol. But maybe this au could help me get over my fear of bugs

I would love to explore the beauty of bugs in this au. I haven't found it yet personally (seriously why do people like butterflies?? It's still a bug eugh) but I think seeing the beauty of something seen as utterly disgusting and monsterous would be a lovely think to explore, and unraveling what years of conditioning and propaganda teaches us, maybe? Idk, it feels like that type of au, you know? A plotless one where the exploration of concept is the center of attention, alongside some character development too? Idk tell me what u think and how you currently see the au

Anyway! I'm happy to announce that I've finished my exam! (Whether or not I pass is another matter but we're not talking about it right now.) I'll start with making Yugi a pharmacy student cause the idea entered my brain a couple months ago and I ended up doodling it across a full page while supposedly studying, and then forgot about it until I accidentally came across the doodles again

What I'm trying to say is. Pharmacy student yugi who wants to bash his own head in. Pharmacy student Yugi who wants to just take over the game shop but maybe the shop isn't doing so well and his mom wants him to have a plan b just in case. Pharmacy student Yugi who knows way too much about pesticides cause in this world, people care much more about killing insect than ours, and similar to how pharmacists kinda evolved to learn and understand more about cosmetics so they can sell it better at their pharmacy, this world's pharmacist evolved to learn more about pesticides

I imagine that the pesticide business would be the new "bacterias are getting resistant to our meds due to wrong use", and have the bugs evolve to be able to resist several types (apparently some already are in our real world??? Help???), so there will be much more pesticide types and many of them will have several generations, with the old ones being out of use for the most part. Anyways. Pharmacy student Yugi who can and WILL poison you if you don't behave. Might not stop you for long, but it would be long enough for yami to take care of things.

Also something we will have to fix is kaiba's utter disbelief to vampires compared to the city's paranoia towards them, either lower the paranoia a bit or slightly alter kaiba's situation? Maybe he was just showing mokuba that not every insect lying around is a vampire, and that this fear is a conditioned response the big companies are using to feast on the people's fear and- *gets bit by a horsefly and gets turned into a vampire* *mokuba is panicking in the background*

He probably will deny anything ever happening after that (not hard cause he won't remember) and will deny himself ever turning to such disgusting blood drinking monster *drinks the "wine" mokuba just gave him*

One thing I kinda want for this au is to have a slightly older cast, if only because it would limit the world interactions otherwise. It's much more fun to have them all be in jobs and universities and finding ways to connect them, than it would be to just compress the story around a high school or two, you know? Kinda why the paranormal au has the character slightly aged up too, tho I imagine this one will have them even older, maybe at least 3rd year university students?

You're best off starting with the manga (which i may or may not have a link to). It's the original continuity and is frankly the most enjoyable version of the story and characters in my opinion. Season 0 was its first anime adaptation, which only aired in Japan. It covers the first ~7 volumes of the manga roughly. I'd start with this before moving on to the duel monsters anime.

The anime we got in the west is Duel Monsters. (Here's season 1, the channel has a lot of the other seasons as well) It skips past the first 7 volumes to get straight to the card games. To be fully honest this anime is...an experience, let's say. HORRIBLE pacing, censorship a la mode, a shit load of filler arcs, and character assassination to top things off. It's still good fun but you're not going to get the best version of the story out of it.

If you like the Duel Monsters anime but wish the duels didn't last 5+ episodes, here's the abridged series. Be warned, a lot of the early episodes are a product of their time, let's say. This is the original abridged series EVER on the internet, and it's still an ongoing project. Honest to god there is nothing significantly worthwhile in the real anime that you'll miss out on by just watching abridged instead LMAO

DSOD stands for Dark Side of Dimensions, which is the manga's tie-in epilogue movie. I'd save it for last.

If you are for some ungodly reason interested in learning the actual real life card game, Master Duel is free to download on most platforms. It's a lot of fun (if you don't drive yourself insane playing ranked) and I found it to be really helpful at teaching the game to a complete noob like myself. There's also Duel Links, which is a slightly more casual mobile game that uses a modified format for faster paced matches.
