Debts of Honor
Pirate, sheâs sitting and drinking with a Maker blessed pirate. There are worse men in this world, however, and Elle is all too aware you cannot judge a man by his looks or the path he walks down to make ends meet. Still, now his home makes more sense to her. Far more sense.Â
Her fingers trace around the lip of her mug as she listens and thinks. The longer she stayed in one place, the more likely it was one of the rogues would find her and then all the void would be let loose. She would not wait for death, and this man has provided a quick escape if she would but take it.Â
âWomen arenât the ones who cause trouble, gentlemen, itâs always the men. Maybe if you traveled with more of my fellows youâd have less trouble across the board, as it were.â She takes a sip of her ale, Â doing her best not to betray how much she hates the stuff. Truly she should have just said hang it all and bought the wine, it would have been worth the extra silver.
The mug thunks against the table and her lips smack together. âI think I would like to go with you.  There is more to this world than Thedas, after all.â
He grumbles an âAye, but trouble is trouble, lassâ, then adds a drawled warningly: âanâ a shipâs a ship anâ not thâ right place for any wench. Or mate, at that. Some are born as landlubbers anâ will die as landlubbers, ye ken? However, I met me some wenches who made bloody fine sailors. Captâns, even. So why-ever not, eh? If ye wanna come with me, then letâs see what yer made of.â
In fact he appreciated the opportunity this girl was: A guide through these strange lands. Something about the way she had carried herself when sheâd walked in, the way sheâd made sure to keep an open eye on her surroundings, told her that she might be a good choice. And if she was willing to come along, then a deal could be made, with his end being protecting her.

âLlomerryn?â She blinks in surprise. She didnât meet many from there, she thought it was a place for pirates. Or at least a heavily trafficked area for those of the pirating  profession.Â
He claimed to be a simple fisherman - but he doesnât look like those masses of sun and sea weathered men sheâs spoken to and bartered with in the market. He smells of the sea, but itâs different somehow. Â Elle idly starts to braid her hair as she scrutinizes the man.Â
âSo youâre a merchant then? Where you sail to? Do you take passengers?â
He notices her astonishment about the island heâs named and secretly wonders why she seems so surprised, what she connects with the place and if, maybe, it has been a bad choice. But he wonât let any doubt show. His decision to stick with his story had been made the moment heâd opened his mouth.
âA merchant, me?â It is his time to give a startled look. He still acts a lot more drunk than he really is. âNay. More like a soldier of fortune, really. Am not a ship-owner, either. Just a sailing-man anâ rover. In search of a ship, actually. Been a deck-hand on several merchants, though. Why? Ye wanna see a bit of the world yerself, lassie?â
He grabs an apple and pulls out a knive, cutting out a brown spot, then eating a chip of apple before biting right into the rest of the sweet fruit.Â
âYouâd take her with you?â one of the fellows heâs been drinking with asks. âThought it would mean bad luck? To take a woman on board of a ship?â
Did this superstition exist in all worlds?
âIf thatâs true then I wonder how any settlements have ever been founded. The ones with crossing oceans anâ rivers, aye?â he asks, stumbling over his tongue and thoughts just a little and waving his knife, but with an amused glint in his eyes. âOâcourse women-folk aboard almost always means TROUBLE, though, mate...â he readily agrees.

âYeah, same you. For being a sea person.â She teased softly as she continued to walk with Alec down the beach. It was adorable that he was a little flustered as he spoke. She herself would be too if she was focusing as hard as he was on the matter of talking. At least they were having a good time and thatâs what mattered.
He smiled at her, a spark in his eye, and they walked in silence, enjoying the silvery light of the moon and the song of the waves. Eventually he stepped a bit closer to her, taking her hand, intertwining their fingers, carefully checking her reaction to this intimacy.

Her toes wiggled in the sand as Alec told her that he rather enjoyed it. There had to be all sorts of adventures going out on the sea with his parents. Always something that a little kid would enjoy.Â
Isabella looked up when she heard the question about what she enjoyed the most. Her eyes glanced at him once more before she answered him. She had to admit she was glad that it was a nice night on the beach, and not to crowed either. âI bet it would surprise you to say that I like the land better. Donât get me wrong I love the freedom of flying but the land is my home.â She told Alec as she watched the sea. âItâs moments like this on the beach, that i treasure the most. Itâs soothing.â
âItâs good to know what place or places make you feel at home. And ya know what? For a landlubber ye ainât so bad - actually I think I grew quite fond of yeâ he confessed half jokingly, then stopped, muttering an apology, to roll up his trouser legs, then walked on to where the waves were licking the sand.Â
Enjoying the water washing over his feet he studied her as he walked on in a leisurely pace.

âI must say that Iâm not surprised to say. You give off that vibe of someone that likes the water.â A soft hum as walking next Alec down the beach. It was interesting to hear about what it was like for Alec to grow up on the sea more than the land. â I see it must been fun to experience that at least. In some way or another. Do you still like the sea the more then land ?â
He nodded, digging his toes into the fine, soft sand. âHmm-hmmm. She claimed me many tides ago, did the sea, anâ it seems Iâll always be hers, bound by her magical charmsâ, he played oracle here, maybe having a bit too much fun doing so. But it was so much truer than she could know!
âWhat about you, though? Whatâs the place you feel most at home? Up in the clouds, or is there some place else?â he asked, watching the dark waves reflect the sickle moon. Look at that, the skies mirrored in the sea!
Bella was as beautiful as the moon herself, and as he well knew often just as radiant...

Isabella smiled at the small gesture from Alec. She  let her arm rest on his arm, as she got out of the car. âThank you.  Lead the way Alec. Or i can.â She smiled at him again as they began to walk to the beach. âHave you always enjoyed the beach? Seeing that you grew up on the sea?â
âOh, aye, I have, indeed!â he answered as he led her towards the shore. âSomehow it has always been a magical place, separating land and sea. As a boy, it filled me with longing for ship-travels and distant shores - and for becoming a man. Later, as a ship-hand... It is always a very special moment to set foot on solid ground again.â

She was glad to hear that Alec didnât want her to get hurt and not something weird or anything. Isabella smiled back when she saw him smiling at her.
âYeah good to hear that. I mean Iâm glad that itâs not nothing serious or anything. Nothing like the feel of sand under your feet. Itâs nice.â Her gaze turned back to the little beach, not fully sure what else to say. There were moments like this, where Isabella didnât know how to deal with the awkward moments.
He gave a small nod, affirming their decision, then got himself busy getting rid of his glossy shoes. Once his socks were stuffed into them and those two parcels stored safely he got out of the car, opened it and held the door open for Isabella, offering her his arm with a âMilady?â

Isabella was happy to hear that it was okay for Alec to take the stroll. She usually didnât show people this place because she liked to think of it as Her own secret place. âGood to hear itâs okay.â
She looked at Alec for a moment before she glanced out the window as she looked over the beach again. Isabella hummed when he asked about her being able to walk on the beach in her heels. She honestly was gonna toss them in the car and walk barefoot. âActually, I wanna leave them in here. I like the feel of sand on my feet. I mean unless youâd prefer I keep them in.â Isabella said not sure if thatâs why Alec was asking or not.
âWhat? Oh, no why! The last thing I want is you spraining you ankle or getting hurt or uncomfortable in any other way!â
He gave her a somewhat bashful smile, for really, this ageâs fashion, especially when it came to the women-folk, was SO beyond him in so many ways! Especially with him still spending most of his time out at sea.
He knew about those new swim-suits for lasses, for example, but ask him which one to pick and you might as well as a goat... He was happy enough that he was able to dress himself halfway decently.
âBut great, then, in this case... Iâd say we should both go bare foot, for it sure is best for the feet and footing!âÂ
The Flying Soapbox
isabellashepard:
âYeah itâs magical to be honest.â Isabella told Alec as they got into the car. She didnât know where theyâd end up but she had to admit that she was enjoying the break from work and worrying about her dad.
âThereâs a nice spot up ahead Alec.â She pointed out to him while they were driving around. It was a common spot that she came when needing to unwind and get away from things. It had some trees that had been planted to bring more to the little coast line. Something about sitting in the sand was calming for the blonde. She always enjoyed it, no matter the time of day that she came here.Â
There was a couple of picnic tables at each end of the little beach. Isabella leaned against the window as Alec drove up to park into the little parking lot that was just a couple steps around the beach. â Is this okay? I mean we can go somewhere with a bigger beach if you want.â
âOh, no, this is perfect!â he assured after giving the place a good look, and the tone of his voice gave proof that he meant it.Â
The tables also meant that they could sit down without getting her dress all dirty with sand but -Â
âSay, will you be able to WALK in those heals?â he asked, a bit worried. It was beyond him how women walked in those shoes on even pavement, let alone sand and rocks, and the last thing he wanted was Bella hurting herself.Â
Of course they could always go for a stroll on bare feet...

isabellashepard:
Isabella leaned against the car as Alec spoke. She was aware of his eyes taking in her form once more but didnât say anything much. âA stroll sounds good to be honest. Enjoy the sights a little.â She gave a small shrugs as she spoke knowing that she was being a little rambly. Something the blonde chalked up to nerves.
He nodded with a reassuring smile. âThere something about the sea at nightâ, he agreed. âA beauty so very different from the bright blue, sunny skies and glittering teal waves...â
So they kept walking to her car and he drove them towards the coast, asking her if she knew a good spot.Â

Her hair is odd for a woman of her age, or lack of age. It had been part of her magical manifestation, and for people who knew that a dead giveaway to her identity. But they are so far away from where sheâd formerly lived, that Elle hadnât thought to cover it. People didnât ask as many questions in these parts. At least not usually.
âThank you.â Her smile is wan, voice soft as she reaches for her glass of sweet win to lift for the toast and drink.Â
âBut, what about you? Iâve never heard an accent quite like yours.â
âAh, that must be âcause oâ all the travellinââ, he explains readily, then adds:Â
âGrew up in a tiny fisher village on Llomerryn.â Lying through his teeth here came easy for him. Heâd had to learn this a long time ago - and learned how to do it:Â
Stay close enough to the truth that you can sprinkle in all the tiny details that will make your story believable. Exchange only the things that just wonât fit in your recent situation.
So he had picked Llomerryn the moment heâd gotten a chance to study a map - horribly vague rag it had been! - for its size and position. It made sense to assume that life there would not be all too different from how heâd grown up.Â
He allows his accent to thicken and his words to slur as if too much alcohol makes his tongue heavy, yet his eyes glitter in the lamplight.
âFather nâ grandfather took me a-fishinâ soon as I could stand on me own twa feet. But grew out oâem fisher boats soon. Been travellinâ ever since, ever the seafaring man, me. Shared ship with people speakinâ a hotpot oâ diffârent tongues. Sands yer own talk, adds ta it âs much as it takes from it, like the tide changinâ the shores. Yet I sâppose yeâll aâways hear the liâl islander-laddie in me...â
Oh, that was a lie as well. Heâs learned to properly mimic many different accents - but that game took lots of concentration...
