Creating A Neutral Foster Nursery
After weeks of paperwork and probing questions, we finally reached the point where I felt comfortable decorating the nursery. She didn't unearth any skeletons or decide we were too weird. PHEW
I ran into to two immediate issues
1. I don't know anything about these kiddos!
2. This is a very small space.
I didn't really anticipate the first problem. Obviously, you don't know much about bio-children before they arrive. You do usually know the gender, how many, and how long they are staying. You also know how old they will be.
The second problem took careful planning. A lot of time spent sitting in the middle of the room staring at the walls and an equal amount of time spent puzzling furniture.
I decided to go very neutral so pops of added color could sway it if we end up with a child who demands pink or bright green.
I also decided to go with an adventure theme. Whenever my bio kids have something new and scary happen I always make a huge deal about it being an adventure. Life is an adventure the good and the bad. Being a foster child is definitely an adventure and we hope their adventure at our house is a great one.
We aren't rich, so like most families, we live on a budget. This meant I got to treasure hunt and be creative.
the crib- our old crib, repainted with flat black spray paint and sealed
the toddler bed- facebook marketplace $20-HOLLA
the storage cube organizer-FREE I am part of an amazing local freebie group. It's a great way to snag something wonderful or to pass on something you no longer need without having to leave your house. (find one or start one in your city)
the mobile-I made it! really simple craft using hemp rope, pretty rocks and a craft ring cost:$2
the changing table/hutch-Ikea I have no idea what the cost was because I've owned it for several years. but its IKEA.
decor- Hobby Lobby clearance section
sheets- target -$10 seriously target has blown me away again. these sheets are absolutely adorable
the toddler blanket-$5 I made it, seriously its a simple sew. even lucy could do it!
all in all I had a ton of fun! It's refreshing to have such a simple room in our loud colorful house.
