It's a good thing Keira stepped in when she does. If this verbal slinging match carried on much longer, it could very well have come to blows, and it doesn't take a genius to work out who would win in that scenario. But Keira does intercede, and all it takes for Howie to back down is a small handful of hushed words. The fight building inside him - turning him into a coiled snake ready to strike - dissipates the second his attention is torn away from the Lieutenant and back to the woman he's spend the better part of two hours trying to save.

He swallows. His shoulders relax slightly. "This isn't over." he says, before taking Keira's hand. "Come on. You need to be checked over. You're right - he's not worth it, Key." He gives McGill one lasting glare before escorting her over to the waiting medics. The reality of his actions wouldn't dawn on him for some hours, yet. Right now, he's justified in his anger. Right now, he was putting a mission commander with a superiority complex in his place. The looming meeting with Captain Ransumnair is all but forgotten in the desire to get Keira seen to.

she's not in any semblance of pain that needs seeing to, even with the furious metaphorical fire burning away at her insides. but when howie takes her hand and slides their fingers home once more, like their hands were made to fit together, keira's fury settles with an exhale — not completely, never completely. that fire was the main reason she was still breathing and not wholly insane, stubborn flickers of flames personifying her soul. key glances over her shoulder to give mcgill a look that said this was definitely over before she lets howie tug her away from the commotion, eyes sharpened with a challenge to fucking try and test it too.

she ought to let it be, to squash the argument entirely at this point, considering they were literally walking away from it all... and yet, ever the rebel, ever the problem, keira can't let sleeping dogs lie. she's never been one to back down from confrontation, she sure as shit wasn't going to start now, more than willing to use this new supposed-abduction trauma to her own benefit. especially not when howie's professionalism was being weaponised against him. " OI, LIEUTENANT ! " she shouts into the growing distance between them, twisting her upper body almost a full 180 to stare behind them as they walk away. her eyes twinkle as they meet mcgill's, satisfied she had secured his full attention for her next act ; a totally defiant little brat-like move. the hand not securely held in howie's lifts, middle finger aimed towards the lieutenant as casually as one might wave to a friend across the road. her tongue lolls out of her mouth too, the very picture of disobedience. she wasn't a soldier, and she really wasn't scared of some big man barking in indignation. " write a fuckin' report about that, mate ! "

giving a small nod of her head, uncharacteristically shy, she climbs gingerly to straddle his lap, one hand softly snaking up his chest and cradling against his jawline ; drawing them closer so she could capture his lips in a kiss. she means it to start slow, languid and sweet at first... but her desire to be enveloped by him once again overwhelms all her senses, the kiss turning desperate and messy in a heartbeat as she slides her tongue against his teeth. letting her emotions of his near-miss crash over them both like a tidal wave, letting herself submerge in him wholly. giving a breathy moan against howie's lips, key feels him hardening beneath her, spurring her further into action ; her hand plunges between them then, stroking his cock as she lines herself up for him, lips wandering a heated path across his face and down his neck. but with one quick move, keira sinks herself down, exhaling against the crook of his neck as her warmth is finally fed. it's not the first time she's received such attention, always reached out to and physically comforted by the older women at her previous places of work ; as if they could practically scent the mummy issues on her, ravenous sharks to her slightest display of bleeding. keira lost count of how many times she had been kissed on her crown, or drawn into the warm bosom of another woman by this point... but this time was the first from kate, and her eyes widened in surprise at the action.

" what was that for? " she queries, blinking away the amazement as she swivels her head to glance up at the chief. keira knew kate understood the gravitas of a well-timed hug, knew from the very experience of weeping like a lost child whilst in her arms. but a kiss? one so affectionate, even bordering maternal... something inside of her felt short-circuited from the act. " no, seriously... are you alright? should i, like, i don't know... call for a fuckin' medic or something? "

What a strange thing it is, to keep losing and gaining and losing and gaining. It would be normal if not for the fact the losses have been so extreme. Every time it has felt like her life has flipped upside down and she still for some reason stands up, dusts herself off and keeps going. The most recent time, when UNIT quite literally went up in flames thanks to one miscalculated disruptor that she thinks Howie might still be paying the price for, had strangely felt a bit harder. Everyone she cared about had still been alive, but contact with most had to be kept absolutely limited to prevent them getting caught.

While life in the Scottish countryside sounded idyllic, there'd been a strange emptiness compared to the bustle of London. Lunches with Key that she'd often looked forward to had been replaced with Josh pulling or occasionally picking her up from her TARDIS to make sure that she would eat something. She understands why Key is so desperate to have those lunches back, because she can't wait either. She also knows too how much she has burnt the candle at both ends while trying to keep some defence network going during the disbandment, even if she hasn't let many people show it. She can't go and dive back in to make it worse when she hasn't even tried to make it better.

"Good. That way we can have some peace every now and then," Chloe chuckles. She loves Josh dearly, and Howie has always been a good friend. It's mostly a joke, not that the idea of peace hasn't become quite nice for her now. "You know, I think they do." She smiles, laughs softly at the surprise on her friend's features. She has never, not once, minded Key's chatter. It hasn't been something she has tolerated, more something that she has enjoyed even as background noise. She knows that Key more often than not likes talking for the sake of it, and that she doesn't particularly mind that Chloe isn't like that.

"Yes! Chickens. We had them on the Isle of Skye. I think Josh used that as an excuse to get Lennie, even though he was just trying to get me out of the house more. He also hated one of them because she'd keep pecking at him. He called her Margaret. Hatcher. I think he was glad to see her go at the very least." She smiles, shakes her head. "You know, I still can't believe that happened to him, but then he's always been one for getting into trouble. Are you ready?"

she keeps waiting for the other shoe to drop. even as her best friend laughs — a sound that keira has so deeply missed hearing, even the more startled laughter when she said something ridiculous — and plays along with key's ever-shifting mind, she just can't help but feel like there's something she's not being told... a secret she isn't being trusted with, for whatever reason that might be. the voice in the back of her head tells her its because she's too stupid to understand, that chloe is dealing with bigger problems than she could ever dream to comprehend — but keira knows her friend well enough by now. she knows that the scientist could keep her head above any waters when it came to professional matters... but, time and time again, it seemed she struggled with the more down to earth issues. that was why the two of them worked so well together. when the time was right though, whatever chloe wasn't saying would come out and key would help however she could ; be that in-action, or some rambling.

squinting as the sun shone above them, already regretting shifting her sunglasses onto her head but being far too stubborn to slide them back down again so soon, key outright gawps at her friend as she keeps spilling the skye-based secrets. " margaret hatcher... fuck, that's good ! don't you dare tell him i said that, but fuck ! so brilliant. " laughter bubbles out of her as if she had already tasted the complimentary champagne here at the spa, giving chloe a squeeze of excitement from the arm still slung casually around her waist. she liked josh a lot — hell, he had saved her life from that cyber-coffin nightmare, after all — especially for chloe, but it was so fun to keep up their faux-petty rivalry nonetheless. it amused keira, at the very least.

" yeah well, just part of his charm, i guess, seeing as we're both pretty bloody good at finding trouble... that, and the italian helps a bit too, " a sharp grin flashes across her face then, as well as that dangerous little twinkle of mischief in her eyes ; very much a hint that chloe might not want to investigate that last comment too hard. but keira gives a wink to shift past that topic, reaching up with her free hand to fluff at the mass of curls spilling down her back as they stared at the grand house. almost as if she were nervous, feeling somewhat out of place here. " yeah... " she exhales, wishing she could grab a quick smoke before having to deal with the likely-very-snooty-people inside, " yeah, fuck it. we deserve some peace and quiet — and you have years worth of gossip to share with lil ol' me whilst we relax ! "
