              ❝   sure    ,  ❞    he  said  with  a  head  tilt    ,     a  mischievous  spark  in  his  eyes    .    to  think  that  frank  longbottom  took  a  class  anywhere  near  that  area  was  comical    .    he  wasn’t  stupid    ,    but  he  certainly  wasn’t  smart  enough  to  understand  a  good  portion  of  what  they  were  learning    .       ❝   you  busy    ?   ❞      the  question  slipped  very  casually  from  his  lips     ,     the  words  transferring  as  easily  as  oxygen  would  to  lungs    .     

             most  men  would  be  nervous    .    frankie  was  just  better  at  hiding  it    .

             ❝   got  a  couple  questions    .     something  about  a  lil’  article  i  read  earlier    .    great  writing    ,    really    ,    but  it  could  do  with  a  few  changes  here  and  there     .    ❞     he  was  referencing  one  of  her  works    ,    obvious  by  the  way  he  smirked    .    naturally  he  found  the  writing  to  be  flawless    ,    much  like  the  writer  herself   ,    but  he’d  prefer  to  talk  to  her  without  the  company  of  her  friends          many  of  whom  he  would  guess  didn’t  like  him  very  much    .

          the  confused  jumble  of  expressions  that  passed  over  her  face  during  just  the  few  sentences  he  said  to  her  must  have  been  a  sight  to  see.   “   ––   am  i  bus–   ”   she  echoed  dubiously,  but  she  was  cut  off  by  the  mention  of  her  article.  now  alice  was  really  paying  attention.  she  felt  a  flutter  of  pride  at  the  compliment,  but  soon  it  shifted  into  indignation  as  he  hinted  at  some  changes.  she  was  left  blinking  at  him,  open-mouthed  and  speechless.  could  do  with  a  few  changes  ?

          “   ––  alice,   ”   one  of  her  friends  complained  warningly,  in  the  universal  tone  of  i’m  starving,  stop  talking  to  this  weirdo  and  let’s  get  lunch.  alice  didn’t  take  her  eyes  off  of  frank,  merely  lifting  a  dismissive  hand  in  the  universal  gesture  of  i’ll  catch  you  later,  he  said  something  about  my  article  and  i  need  to  find  out  what  he  meant.  she  folded  her  arms,  tilting  her  head  at  him.   “   ––   OKAY.  i’m  listening.  how  exactly  do  you  think  i  could  i  improve  my  article  on  making  the  auror  program  more  accessible  ?   ”   

          the  question,  of  course,  was  not  meant,  or  expected,  to  be  answered.  odds  were  he  hadn’t  even  read  the  article,  just  wanted  to  get  a  rise  out  of  the  tryhard  pureblood  disgrace.  she  knew  his  type;  there  were  plenty  of  boys  like  him  who  got  off  on  undermining  girls  like  her.  unluckily  for  him,  alice  got  off  on  stepping  on  their  overinflated  egos  and  crushing  them  flat.  like  a  cockroach.

             he  wondered  silently  if  she  was  expecting  him    .    if    ,    at  this  point    ,    she  realized  he  MUST’VE  been  outside     ,     finishing  off  the  last  of  his  cigarette  while  mumbling  poetic  verses  under  his  breath          poetic  verses    ,    he  might  add    ,    that  made  very  little  sense      ,    much  like  everything  else  he  did    .   he  wondered  not-so-silently  if  her  class  was  almost  over    ,    his  eyes  falling  on  a  passerby  who  noted  the  fact  that  he  was  talking  to  himself    .

              watching  the  amused  student  walk  away    ,    people  began  to  file  out  of  the  classroom    .    frankie  leaned  on  a  pillar  as  he  watched  the  different  faces    ,    a  relaxed  expression  crossing  his  features  as  he  finally  noticed  HER    .     by  the  looks  of  it    ,    she  hadn’t  been  expecting  him    ;    good  thing    ,     really     .    he  enjoyed  surprising  her    .

          alice  hadn’t  been  expecting  the  newly-familiar  voice,  but  as  soon  as  she  heard  it,  she  wondered  if  she  should  have  been.  she  turned  to  face  him,  ignoring  her  friends’  scattered,  unsure  laughter  behind  her.   “   ––   basics  of  human  transfiguration  and  untransfiguration  for  aurors  ?  in  the  auror  academy  ?  YUP,  this  is  my  class.   ”   

          she  looked  at  him  askance,  took  in  his  messy  hair,  wrinkled  her  nose  slightly  at  the  smoke  on  his  breath.  she  wasn’t  sure  why  frank  longbottom  kept  popping  up  in  her  life.  they  hadn’t  been  friends  at  hogwarts,  and  they  ran  in  completely  different  circles.  did  he  want  something  ?  

          alice  shifted  her  books  in  her  arms,  well  aware  of  her  friends  hovering  impatiently  behind  her,  clearly  much  more  interested  in  going  to  lunch  than  continuing  on  this  conversation.  “   ––   do  you  have  class  here  now,  or  …  ?   ”   did  he  even  go  to  class  ?  she  couldn’t  say.

–  sydney  park;  20;  she / her  ——  is  that  really  alice  fortescue  ?  it’s  been  so  long  !  did  you  hear,  she  is  studying  to  be  an  auror  ?  from  what  i  remember,  she  was  self  reliant  and  ambitious,  but  also  pretty  cynical  and  self  righteous,  who  knows  after  all  this  time.  word  on  the  street  is,  they’re  with  the  order  of  the  phoenix,  but  that  doesn’t  define  them.

ok  so  quickie  intro  cause  i  don’t  have  a  ton  of  time

alice  was  raised  by  her  uncle  florean  (  of  ice  cream  shop  fame  )  and  his  partner  silas  after  her  parents  died  when  alice  was  only  three  years  old

she  grew  up  in  the  flat  above  their  ice  cream  store,  which  could  definitely  be  more  cramped  than  cozy  at  times,  and  the  store  didn’t  bring  in  a  lot  of  money  –  but  it  was  home

they’d  have  potlucks  every  thursday  night,  her  uncles’  friends  and  fellow  shopkeepers  all  crammed  knee-to-knee  on  their  living  room  couches,  mismatched  chairs  cluttering  the  room  haphazardly,  the  room  full  of  laughter  and  the  scents  of  different  spices

alice  spent  a  lot  more  time  around  adults  growing  up  than  other  kids  tbh  so  definitely  starting  hogwarts  she  was  a  bit  more  serious  and  mature  than  the  other  first  years

flo  and  silas  took  alice  into  muggle  london  often,  on  the  tube  to  visit  the  british  museum,  and  hyde  park,  and  the  cinema,  and  memorably,  london’s  first  pride  march  when  alice  was  twelve

silas  was  a  muggleborn,  and  he  wanted  alice  to  experience  the  culture  he  grew  up  with.  alice  enjoyed  their  trips,  but  she  never  really  understood  their  importance  until  she  started  at  hogwarts  

that’s  when  she  realized  for  the  first  time  how  different  her  parents  had  been  than  her  loving  uncle  flo.  they  had  been  part  of  an  elite  pureblood  society,  who  looked  down  their  noses  at  muggles  and  muggleborns,  who  were  for  everything  uncle  flo  was  against,  and  against  everything  uncle  flo  was  for.  alice  didn’t  know  what  to  think.  she  had  always  imagined  her  parents  to  be  kind,  wonderful  people

strangers  looked  at  her  with  pity  (  poor  little  orphaned  alice  fortescue,  living  with  her  disgraced  uncle  with  barely  enough  to  get  by  )  and  oh  boy  it  made  alice’s  blood  boil

she  was  proud  and  stubborn,  and  determined  to  prove  them  wrong

so  she  threw  herself  into  classes,  and  extracurriculars,  and  spoke  loudly  about  her  belief  systems

alice  faced  a  lot  of  prejudice  growing  up  —  against  her,  against  her  uncles,  about  their  living  situation  —  and  so  now  she’s  got  a  bit  of  a  chip  on  her  shoulder

she  still  does  her  best  to  uphold  the  values  her  uncles  taught  her,  of  kindness and  honesty  and  loyalty,  but  she  also  expects  very  little  from  people

partly  why  she  insists  on  doing  everything  herself  —  she  thinks  other  people  will  disappoint  her.  very  independent  but  also  stubborn

can  take  herself  a  little  seriously  sometimes.  someone  pls  teach  her  to  loosen  up

bit  of  a  muggle  nerd  tbh  thanks  to  silas

always  honest,  sometimes  to  a  fault

not  good  at  taking  constructive  criticism
