In our memories, we blur only the faces of those we have hurt. And with that we begin searching for a new love. We don’t care, we do so shamelessly; we’re only kind because we want to be loved. That’s just how people are.

My escapades in China at the secret tomb of the emperor.
by Kotori Kawashima
This is my father’s jacket. The history behind it is pretty amazing. I found it in this old box in my parents closet labeled “Dad’s clothes.” I opened the box hoping I might find some cool old clothes so I can become even more of a hipster. I pulled out this piece and asked my dad about it. My dad told me he was in Hong Kong during the Tianamen Square Massacre June 4,1989. While the event was happening, protestors in Beijing faxed over a design of the Goddess of Democracy to my dad and his fellow art colleagues. In support of their people in China, they screen-printed this design on t-shirts, sweaters, aprons, anything they could get this design on to let the people know what was happening in China. My dad made this jacket to always remember that horrific incident. After 20 years this jacket has made it back to Hong Kong with me and I’ve been wearing it proudly since.
