REFLECTION
Throughout the whole studio, I was left mostly lost as these past years in RMIT has taught me that the assignment briefs had to be met and you always had to make/do things as instructed. After spending a semester with Andy, I realised that this practice that RMIT has instilled in me has made me a robot like everyone else! When I was left with an open brief, all these ideas came to me and during all the research, I got lost into the whole beauty and elegance of the work of others that I never got to making my own publication. The initial idea and the final product were two totally different things which I had previously envisioned in my head. When I started "thinking with my hands” like Andy always tells us, we actually know our capabilities and for my case, my initial idea was a way over my limited capabilities. Things started to then change when I started thinking with my hands. I had to change my final product as I could not laser cut designs onto a book. This then led to me thinking of the examples that Andy had shown us in class and Visionaire Magazine came to my mind. Instead of laser cutting or even manually cutting these intricate designs, I decided to create prints of these designs by screen printing it. The idea of prints came about as tattoo artists usually sell their prints and that was what inspired me to create prints that are personally signed and numbered. This makes my publication a limited run and thus brings about exclusivity. All in all, the semester has really been a fruitful one and I hope my future modules would be more like this one as it allows me to work with my hands instead of just being stuck on the computer. Thank you Andy for passing down all these valuable knowledge and bringing all sorts of crazy stuff for us to do in class. It has been a really great semester which I really enjoyed and I will never look at publication design the same ever again!
