//the day is over and I am still not done with the business plan
Jane wasn’t going to waste anymore time, so she got right down to it while they sat. “Similar tastes? So we can meet here again?” She firstly asked with a quirked brow, leaning herself over the table where she sat just so she could visibly observe him more, and also he would see the seriousness settle in her green eyes. He was honest enough, that was good. Now she wanted him to notice the honesty in her eyes. Yes. He was observant enough.
All was well.
“My name is Jane Shepard,” she smirked, omitting the usual Commander Shepard phrasing. Her name was well known with few, at the moment anyhow - but among those few she was quite notorious and resilient for her ability with the military and commanding. Her non-familiarity with people in the area had more to do with her changing jurisdiction - people she actually took demands from. Maybe that’s why he was so interested in her? Obviously, this moment would mutually benefit the both of them–both were more than what meets the eye. Abilities and talents beyond the norm.
Her lips parted, continuing on vocally past her own thoughts, realizing she couldn’t recall his own name – or much about him to start with. So she shot the question back at him. “I don’t remember if I got your name at all, what was it?”
“Probably. Depends if I will like this meeting to happen again,” he replied with a smile and for a second looked away. Will he? Probably yes. Every moment felt so... loaded, so alive, like a fresh air after weeks spent in the city. A person, who did not open herself as a book, a person as logical as himself. He will want this meeting to happen again, but not that he would say it out loud. That would destroy the magic, wouldn’t it?
Jane. He took the word in front of his eyes, trying to remember everything, he could associate with it. Jane, his twin sister’s best friend. Jane Seymour, the Queen after Anne Boleyn, mother of King Edward VI. Jane Austin, famous writer, Queen of romance, who stayed single for her life. Jane Adams, anti-war activist. And the tragic, but beautiful Lady Jane Grey - queen for 13 days, executed by Mary Tudor, King’s Sister. Shepard? He knew some famous politicians sharing the same surname, and... an auditory illusion of a tone. Nothing of that really said much about the women in front of him. Yes, she could be a Queen, he could imagine her green eyes freezing when giving orders, but... Queen of what? Malcolm wanted to take out his McBook and do some short search, because he had not know the name, even though, he had a feeling that he should know it; but he did not take out his computer, he did want to lose the moment, when both of them were playing this strange game, like they would be blind, slowly moving closer to each other, trying to understand, where is the border, when defense mechanism will start to work.
His name. There was a millisecond of decision. He had two identities with him, one was his real one, and second one - short term project, with a social security number, apartment and occupation in a Museum. Do to his second identity, Sebastian, he needed to take a crush course in Art History, becoming expert, PhD level professional in less than week. He could give her that name - with perfect history, dead parents and boring life. But he could give his real name - a guy with expensive taste, dog and several companies, venture investor and social star. He had another name, the one he coded in every hack he made. That name was not in the consideration.
“Malcolm James Verger. Call me Malcolm.” he had a classy name, like his parents would have know that Malcolm will fall in love with literature, make money and end up in society, where old ways were still important.
He looked straight in Jane’s eyes, trying to read what was behind them. Only some people could hold eye-contact with him for more then some moment, they said, his look was threatening. Of course, it was, if some men tried to undress women only with looks, than Malcolm was going a bit further, trying to unlock the secrets person was keeping. “So, Jane,” he paused, tasting the name “What do you do for living, besides not keeping an eye on your phone?”
This has been on my mind for long but I’m gonna do this - please reblog this if you’re comfortable with pre-establishing relationships. I do not mean “met at the grocery store two weeks ago” or “have a common friend”, but rather stuff like “have been best friends since kindergrden”, “go for a beer every friday”, “friends with benefits”, “dated in highschool”, “hate each other’s guts because -insert reason-” etc. Something meaningful (but not necessarily shippy) and I mean with muns/characters you have not interacted with, because I cannot believe I am the only one who prefers jumping right into the heart of the human interaction
going to sleep. exam tomorrow, rest of the replies coming in tomorrow as well. have a good night/day/whatever fits your timeline.
There was a small smirk forming on her red lips; small and very brief micro expressions occurred on his face within the very small time frame it took him to think. If she didn’t have the eye for it like an average person, surely she would’ve missed it. It had an attractive sense to her. He was looking at her features, she thought he was anyway. He could’ve just been behaving politely, or perhaps there was more to it and his face than she knew. Jane didn’t know for certain.
Attraction aside, she wasn’t going to down her defenses just yet, though. “You trust my taste so quickly?” She asked, albeit slightly surprised; he had other motives, maybe. Her eyes stayed connected with his gaze even as it drifted elsewhere as they made approach for the shop – it was not wholly in distrust now though, but to watch his features. There was a pause of movement before carefully deciding where to sit, usually such a decision wasn’t a huge dilemma, but Jane felt pressure on her choice - observation. Much like she did with him.
“Eh, I come here every now and then. It’s my favorite place on the block, but I guess to others it wouldn’t count as much if I only come in maybe once a week. If that,” she shrugged as she spoke, moving her feet for a swift decision. The booths, along the wall. Usually she’d sit in the back, but this time she decided for the middle booths, sliding into the seat away from the door - facing it. “Sometimes I get a drink, and sometimes I don’t. I just enjoy the atmosphere. And what about you?” Jane finally asked. “Do you go to places like this?”
She was careful, with her words and movements, like a field engineer looking for a mortar bomb. He just wasn’t sure why. Had he been too easy to read, or his actions too strange? It was hard for Malcolm to adapt to normal society, where people talked about weather outside and the news from the White House, like that would matter. Like the next elections would matter, like democrats and republicans actually decided what will happen in the country. Pathetic.
But she was no better then him in interaction. Usually women would smile after his acknowledgment of their taste and probably even blush a bit, but she... she needed to dig into it, finding the actual meaning of his words. Such a pleasant change. “I read people quit well” He decided to give the most surprising answer of them all - the truth. “And I feel that our tastes could be similar” Or at least, their manner of thinking, but he decided not to say it out loud. That could be considered to be creepy, and, probably, she was not what he thought she was, probably, she was much more a normal human than he saw.
However, she took more time then normal person choosing where to sit, and her choice was something, he was expecting, well, almost. Normally, if people spent some time looking for a place, it was because they needed electricity for their smart-phones, but she needed the view. Doors. He would choose the same place, just more in the corner, to capture the whole room, every face, every movement, every look. Would she do the same, if not his eyes, scanning every movement, every pause she made? Such a strange feeling, how people act, when they realize, someone is observing. How much they were able to control? How much she was able to control? And he, himself? How much of his small actions he could control? This far, he had given her the role of doing things, making his part easier. But now he needed to speak. “Sometimes. a pause. “I like to hold business meetings in non-formal atmosphere”. That was not a lie. Of course, his understanding about business was different than normal association. But then again, his work, was a business, a service. Just very expensive one. “May I know your name?”he finally asked, the most common, most normal question possible.
Callie had expected him to fight back. And she was disappointed he hadn’t. Because they she would have been able to slap him again and again, until he had managed to fight her off. Because she might be smaller and less strong- she was fast. And she knew where to hit him so it would hurt. It annoyed her how calm he remained and it made her want to fight him even more. But he caught her hands and so she couldn’t really further than using her legs and feet.
“I’m not going to fucking calm down,” she hissed. She kept her eyes on him, her legs trembling with anger. “Oh, sure. Look down my shirt. Pervert,” she spat at him. She didn’t get why he had to look at her like that when she didn’t want him to. Why could he not just look when she wanted him to look?
“I know what I did and you don’t have to tell me. You could have kept that information to yourself and you could have said something else. You could have said something nice- you could have given me a compliment. Why did you have to bring this up?” And, as this topic usually made her do, she started to cry. She turned her gaze down at the floor so he couldn’t see her, but the sound made it obvious that she was in fact crying. She tugged at her hands softly, weak now. “I wanna go home.”
Such drama, such hysteria! Oh, he understood why, he perfectly understood, he had carefully crafted the feeling of suspense, the threat, the unreadable future. Verger had painted it black, or dark, dark grey, for her to be confused. But at one moment he had stopped controlling himself, pushing her way too far, over the border, and it was not interesting, it was not fascinating, it was just ugly. She was so irrational! If Callie really felt endangered, how did she thought screaming and not following the orders would help her survive? She was just a small, beautiful girl, whose boss probably could kill her for loosing such a generous client. He was a man with the tools to make everything possible. And even stripping down the power - physically, he was much stronger than she was.
And her words were as confusing and out of place as her actions. “Wasn’t that this one thing you wanted so much? My attention?” he asked, his tone was quite and cold, emphasis on the last word had a taste of an attack. Short laugh. “Like any other girl, you could not accept the idea that you are not the center of the universe”. Malcolm looked aside. Will she really turn out to be such a disappointment, another wasted day, another wasted month? Wasn’t she really able to climb over such small obstacle as emotions? Pathetic.
“You wanted me to lie? Oh, Callie, life is not a fairy-tale.” he was laughing “All those puppies who think you are the sun and moon would be ready to tell you whatever you wanted to hear, but for me it has never been about your comfort” He was speaking faster, putting emphasis only on the last word. “I thought there was something in you. I thought, you had bigger ambitions, bigger targets, but apparently, you are just another stripper who has only one goal in her life - ensuring that others are pleased with her”. Every word was a bullet, attacking Callie’ s pride. Every word was supposed to push her even further, but probably, it was already too much. She started to cry. Malcolm had seen people crying, a lot, to be honest, but his intention wasn’t to make her cry. At least, not because of this.
“You have no home where to go. You just do not understand, don’t you? I wanted to be honest with you. I wanted to offer you something valuable, something that could fix your broken life” Disappointment in his voice was straight-forward.
Where will you go when you will bring the whole world down? What will you do, when you will realize, this all, it was just a game, but “game over” was real?

i am on/off now, prepping for exam that is tomorrow and replying during the study breaks.
Her expression was lidded with curiosity, eyeing him shortly before finding words worth speaking. Jane didn’t like being analyzed, but yet she did the same to people. Maybe that’s why she wasn’t always as trusting of others– she knows what goes through people’s minds normally, and abnormally. He was careful, yet precise in his movements and words. As was she, though. Jane was sure she’d met her match. She had to be careful.
Eventually, she feigned a smile and pointed ahead of her. “There’s a shop just down the street that I particularly enjoy getting cappuccino from, they have just about anything you’d ever want. Are you game?”
Her eyes were so familiar. Not the colour of her eyes, or form, or whatever else you could imagine, when one talks about beautiful lady. He did see her beauty, face made out of pure perfection, body, that everybody would love to touch, but beauty had no value in the world of plastic surgery, in the world, where couple thousands of dollars could buy everything he could wish for. No, her eyes, for him, was something different, a mirror of her mind. Her look was different, deeper, colder, more detail oriented. And he captured every movement of her.
“I trust your taste” he replied. Cappuccino. She needed coffee with milk, she loved to enjoy it, not just drink it to wake up. More stable then latte drinkers, a bit classical. Or maybe it was social norm, the safe choice? Was she already careful about her words with him, or was she always careful? She was something he could relate to. But was it? Malcolm knew everything about everyone else, but himself? Hacking himself was not an option, there was nothing to hack.
When they entered the place, Malcolm quickly scanned the place, finding several tables where he would feel comfortable. But he was willing to go with her preference for today, for the simple reason that Malcolm wanted to know her. A bit. At least, for a while. “Do you come here often?”
MALCOLM JAMES VERGER, 37, Hacker, Michael Fassbender FC
You think, you can hide behind your numbers, firewalls, passwords? You cannot. Not from me. I will bring down everything that protects you, I will strip you down till your very basic form of existence, I will find your weak spot and crush you. Or someone else. Money is the only protection, money you pay me
OC; multi-verse; cross-fandom; multi-ship. Mun and Muse 18+; Warnings: strong language, violence, mature themes, sociopath;
“I hope the whole department doesn’t include me because I like my job and having an apartment and my car and food.” She was babbling again, she really needed to stop that, especially in front of her boss. Felicity had had many moments where she had said something she shouldn’t have, doing it in front of her boss would be horrible. “I don’t really have a title, I just work in the IT Department.”
Probably she thought they both are out in a sleepover, and now they will take out candies and chat about their relationships and colleges and watch movies. How did she managed to make it trough the interview with all this talking? Probably, it was her confidence, that was encoded in her words. “That is nice to hear. You forgot our ridiculous expensive health-care and gym subscription.” He smiled a bit, letting her chatting go. he was in a surprisingly good mood. The problem in their network, that should be the worst thing ever, was something refreshing, an actual proof that company, that has around 100 security threats, can break down and it is worth investing in real IT team.
“Apparently you are the only one, that works” Malcolm shortly replied. Elevator went on for some seconds more, and then the doors opened. “After you” he let her go. Server room was almost empty, the only sound was the calming buzzing of the machines.”It looks like it is only you and me now”
“I need a reason,” she continued. She wasn’t just going to believe him because he said she should. “Can you please stop telling me someone’s going to kill me.” She didn’t have to put up with his crap. Even her boss would understood it if she’d leave now. Or well, maybe not.
Callie looked stunned for a few seconds when he said that. She then just went mental on him. “So instead of asking me about myself and getting to know me, you just look online to see what kind of dirt you can find on me? You don’t have the fucking balls to talk to a girl but you dare to fucking do that to me?!” She was screaming now. A high-pitched scream. She was furious. She didn’t care if he had looked at pictures on her facebook, but not this. He couldn’t talk about things he knew nothing about. “Oh, you hope you had killed me two minutes ago, because I’m not going to let you get away with this. No matter how stupid it was -size-wise- she did it anyway. She jumped forward and slapped him across his face, followed by a kick against his knee.
“I would have killed you five minutes ago if In wanted to,” Malcolm told her, not change the tone of his voice, like he would be saying something along the lines we will have chicken for dinner, probably that sentence would hold more emotions. He had used to violence on TV, in his neighborhood, next to him every day, in police reports and, probably, somewhere deep inside himself. So he felt, that talks about her possible death was actually a helpful hand for her to realize, how bad was the place she decided to be, but, apparently, Callie had a different idea. She was not the brightest star in the skies, but for the next Malcolm was not ready.
Her pitch was annoying. Way too high for Malcolm to tolerate it normally. But, she will shut up, sooner or later she will need some oxygen to continue existing. Probably, this was a mistake. She was way too human, way too basic, her mind had the same bugs and bad parts of the code, as everybody else. She was no snowflake, at least, not now, when her very basic instincts took over her rational thinking. Those small detail evolution had not fixed yet.
As her sudden attack was a surprise, Malcolm could not stop it, His brains were not sure, was it really happening. Was she mad? She had no chance against him. It hurt, and Malcolm could hurt her as well, but he had promised himself not to. “Calm down” his voice was still silent, but there was no guessing, the sound was threat. He was holding her hands, and for a second, her half-closed blouse caught her attention. He never thought... he would want someone when emotions hit the highest score. “You work in a strip club. There always is a reason. I am the king of information, did you really think I would let you inside this apartment without knowing who you are? I was not looking for any dirt, I found what was there.” he was a hacker. He had a dossier of every person he had ever met. And her past was quite clean, compared to others. “I have the dossier of your boss as well, of your dear colleges, of the bartender... Information is what keeps me living. So calm down.”
“Easier said than done,” she mumbled. She had given up on buttoning the blouse. She hadn’t gotten further than three buttons and she buttoned it up wrong anyway. “What the fuck are you saying that for? You can’t just say someone’s going to kill me-”
Or maybe he could. Because he was going to kill her and so he knew. Oh god, what was she still doing her. But his words made her calm again. And curious, most of all. What did that mean? “Stay and do what?”
Callie frowned at him, folding her arms over each other. “If this is some kind of proposal, then it’s a no.” She had gotten plenty of those before.”
She did not know him, of course, she did not. He was just a rich creep, probably a killer. For her. She did not know, what his words mean. “My word you can take for granted”. A note of annoyance in his voice. he did not enjoy the fact that someone doubted him. “You cannot be serious about your... job” a smile. Did she really consider it a job? “Your field is full with crazy assholes. One will kill you one day. If not a client, then your boss. His criminal record is thicker then Bible” probably, the fact, that Malcolm found it fumy, wasn’t really healthy.
“This is no proposal. I would never marry a girl without education and background of a hospital.” there it was. a sentence, that dropped the bomb - he knew things about her. Things, that could be only accessed trough highly protected government services.
“I’m not saying that I’m going to like it. But he’s my boss and I’ll just have to put up with it. I’ve been through worse.” She was in no place to lose her job and if that meant she’d get hit, then so be it. But she would see it coming. She had no idea what Malcolm was up to and that was the thing that scared her.
“I don’t know what you’re going to do. That’s the fucking problem. I don’t see anything coming. You just sit there, all calm, and then you suddenly lash out to me. If you have a problem with me opening my mouth, then you shouldn’t complain that I say so little about myself.”
“I will not hurt you” he put it in a very simple, not to push her panicked brains to think way too much. Probably, he put it out there for himself, just to remind himself the intention he had. She was not to be hurt. She came from the bottom, place, where her personalty was taken away from her, stripped down till her looks, because people were ready to pay for beauty they could not marry.
If she would know the rules, if she could predict the next move, the game would be boring. Didn’t she enjoy it? Seemed that no. “You can go, and end up in a dungeon, where you will end up by working in that place, or some serial-killer will kill you” a pause, and small smile on his lips. He looked at himself in the mirror - he was the perfect American Serial killer.
“Or you can stay. And if I will like you, I will give you part of everything” that was a deal with devil, wasn’t it?
“Too bad,” she hissed. “I don’t care what you think of me, to be honest.” She just wanted to get out of here. She didn’t feel safe and therefor she thought she should leave. Maybe she’d have to give back his money, but at least she’d feel secure.
“He’s not going to like it. He’ll probably hit me for doing it, but that’s alright. It’s worth it,” she told him. She got her clothes from the table and shrugged her blouse back on, but her hands were shaking and she couldn’t get the buttons closed.
Callie looked up at him, clearly scared. She had been here for not even ten minutes and he had already grabbed the back of her neck, had bitten her lip and he had thrown her on the chair and threatened her. She didn’t want to stay longer and find out what was yet to come.
“You should, “ he answered, slowly, moving away from her, letting her breath, giving her more space. People felt safer, when they had more private space, didn’t they? Malcolm felt bad for hurting her, getting so out of control so quick, but there was something really irritating about her. Now he felt that he is loosing Callie, which was far from his intentions.
“Worth what? That asshole will hit you because you did not want to do something he wanted you to do. You are tamed. You will not get away from him. What do you think I will do, that makes you wish for a black eye and broken ribs?” he knew, but he needed her to spell it out loud. To understand, had he translated her right. But was there a something to misunderstand about how terrified she was?
“Maybe it would be. But I’m a good liar,” Callie hissed. She’d tell him what he wanted to hear and she would do it well. She’d play into the things he said and she’d make herself sound perfect. This was why she had so many regular clients- some even came every night she worked. She made herself look perfect and they all believed it.
Just for the slightest bit his finger distracted her. She felt how it trailed down her neck and then to her shoulder. She was surprised by the softness of his touch, but the roughness that followed surprised her even more. Before she knew, she was underneath him- smaller than him.
“Get your fucking hands off of me!” She screamed but he already seemed to realize he was hurting her. She, very quickly, slid down on the floor and crawled past his legs. Before he knew it, she was back on her feet. “I’m not doing this with you. You’re too much of a freak- I’m gonna go. You can have your money back if you like.”
Good liar or bad liar, it did not matter. Lies stayed lies, and they were not worth a cent. People lied everyday, that was nothing interesting, even good lies started to get boring. He knew that, because he lied every day.
But she was a fighter, at least, she thought, she needs to fight. Probably she thought, he is a serial killer, and that she is a victim. He could be, but as far he had observed himself, he had not crossed the line, not yet, not in any close future. There was a part of him, more violent, then normal human being, but he knew, where the line is. She thought, he has no idea about the borders, and Malcolm could understand. But leaving him, now, right here?
“You are weak” he hoped, she will not run and try to get the doors opened. They were locked, and hearing hysteria in her voice was not a thing he wanted. Yes, Malcolm wanted to scare her a bit, but not that much.
“If you leave now, and ask my money back, how will your boss, who was ready to sell you, if I would like, will react?”
