i truly believe ole had to take gator's eyes for gator's character development, bc it put him in a position to realize how little his father cared for him and to finally let him go. it serves as a sort of redemption, like oh yes you can come back from all the horrible things you have done, but not completely unscathed and without consequences. but if you want it enough, the redemption is there waiting for you, if you are willing to give something up to receive it. the way neither of them end up coming out completely unscathed after what they both have done to each other.. ole will always mourn linda, and gator will always mourn his eyesight. both of them can move forward with their lives but neither of them can ever forget it, both of them will probably hold a piece of sadness or anger over what happened and yet, they are even, and, at least i like to imagine, they are hopefully able to make peace and accept what the other has done. i also find it interesting that in the end, the anger and frustration probably falls more on themselves than it does onto the other. ole lost linda because, as dot said, he chose to take a bad job, he played the cat and mouse game, so much so that he let gator track him to linda's home just so he could catch him, and in the end he lost the person he cared about. and gator chose to play the same game despite being warned time and time again.. and yet, he needed to prove himself, he needed to see how big and tough and manly he was, how worthy of his father's love, and in the end lost his eyes and was subsequently rejected by the very person he'd been trying to gain approval and love from his entire life. neither of them can yell at the boulder for being a rock, or get mad at the table they stubbed their toe on. they can only forgive, accept, and move on.
