by the time they got to the radio station and officially started to record, inyoung had managed to wake herself up. they said their official greetings and after that, the show really started. she laughed when it seemed like she was suppose too and tried to be attentive as possible. “what was the process to debut like? and what’s your role in the group?” one of the host asked her and inyoung smiled. “honestly, the company was really careful with planning and selecting members. the line up had been complete but after a final evaluation..the company switched me in.” and another girl had been taken out. “i’m in charge of dance and i also do vocal’s and rapping…” she trailed off…should she even mention she had been given the role of the visual? 

is inyoung actually prettier than her? that’s the first thing that crosses suhee’s mind when she’s sitting in her chair for hair and make up. her next thought is about her hair         it’s still the same as it was for banana allergy monkey promotions, a chestnut shade of brown cropped to her shoulders. she wonders if they’ll ever give her bangs. 

the radio interview starts as it should, with suhee laughing along and putting on her carefully practiced facade. giggly, sweet, thoughtful, kind. nothing like how she usually was. she can’t help but watch the way inyoung conducts herself with curiosity. she’s the one with a stage name, isa, but she’s seemingly without a stage personality. suhee’s the opposite. they’d offered her a stage name, sue, sandy, sara, but she’d turned them all down and insisted         im suhee is im suhee, no one else. she has a long term plan, for what she wants to do with her life once she’s cycled out of the idol circuit, and for that, she needs her name intact. 

and then things take a turn. underneath the table, suhee clenches her fists. 

she wonders if inyoung knows that suhee would gladly deck her in the face if she wouldn’t end up bruising her knuckles. inyoung didn’t deserve to debut in the place of the other girl, that much suhee knew. 

“ i was in the debut line up from the start, ”  she says, sweetly, commanding her cheeks to flush pink and looking away bashfully         as if her talent was something she was shy about.  “ i’m melody’s main vocal and lead dance, and it’s been such a pleasure so far. ”

“ wouldn’t it have been a shame if isa hadn’t made it? ”  the host asks.

suhee conjures up a smile.  “ ah, it would have been, i suppose. i think either way, it was a shame, you know? either way, someone’s spot in the group was taken. ”

“hey, long time no see.” casual, cool, collected. he can do this.

a self-improvement kick. that’s what suhee is calling her promise to be nicer, to be kinder, to let go of everything that’s happened in her past. she wants to dispose of all her past grudges and disagreements, even if it ends up only being to make room for new ones.

is she going to regret this? maybe. the highly likely possibility that she won’t be able to keep her cool or that she’ll end up snapping and saying something mean or snide crosses her mind as she sets up the room that dingbat group have allotted them for the next couple of hours, a plain enough studio, nothing out of the ordinary. her guitar         always a necessity for singing sessions, for scales and the like         is balanced up against her chair. settling back onto the seat, she picks it up, strumming absentmindedly as she waits.

will he look the same? she wonders. their paths had hardly crossed since what happened, and she didn’t go out of her way to check up on him. she looks different. her long hair had been chopped off and lightened in colours, now brushing her shoulders rather than tumbling down her back. she feels different inside too. she’s trying to learn to take down the walls she’s kept up around herself for years, trying to unlearn a decade of spiteful coping mechanisms, one pro bono singing lesson at a time. 

xiao’s voice pulls her from her thoughts. her first instinct is to point out how lame that line was, but she holds back, a thin smile stretching out her lips as her fingers come to a halt on her guitar strings. she’d been playing the song she wrote for hyena on the keyboard. no one could hear it yet. 

instead she forces out a laugh, and a stupid line of her own, “ you can say that again. sit down, come on. ”  one leg crossed over the other, she tilts her head to one side.  “ if i’m honest, i didn’t expect you to say yes when i offered to help you. ”  a pause.  “ but i’m glad you did. ”

S A N H A:

     “what’s on your mind, bug?” he asks, grinning at the thought of suhee like a tiny mosquito. he’s more than positive she must think of him as such, and often. “just looking at you is giving me a stress headache,” he laughs, taking a water bottle from a passing staff member gratefully, completely gassed. “can we sit though, before i, like, pass the fuck out?”

she’s about to let out a sigh, deep and dramatic, and she’s about to start on a rant         or maybe not. her thoughts are all over the place, and she doesn’t know whether she needs to dump them all out or mull over them a little bit more first. but either way, sanha cuts her off, and she nods, conceding easily as his words remind her of the dull pain aching in the soles of her feet.  “ sure. i’ve been pacing around back here since i came off stage, i think my legs are going to fall off. ”  an easy, breathy laugh falls from her lips. it’s a pretty sound, but still frayed with frustration and dissatisfaction. 

it’s mere seconds before they’re sitting, suhee’s elbows resting on her lap and her chin balanced on the heel of her palm, her cat ears discarded next to her         the headband portion was digging uncomfortably into her scalp. she’s quiet for a moment before she opens her mouth to speak, unusual behaviour for suhee, typically so quick - witted and sharp - tongued with her words.  “ how did it feel when you debuted? ”  suhee sits back, crossing one leg over the other, looking sanha in the eyes. she purses her lips, eyes donning a faraway look as she thinks.  “ it’s . . . not what i expected. i don’t hate it or anything, the song is fine, and i think people actually like us. no, they do like us. i know they do. ”  if cockiness momentarily slips into her voice, all it is is a sign that this is nothing serious, that the regular suhee is still very much present.  “ how could they not? we’re adorable. ”

she pauses again, letting out a soft sigh.  “ i think i just built it up to be more than it ever could be. my own damn fault. ”

“nice catwoman costume,” junho tries to find some sort of small talk to filter the heavy air between them once all of the awkward, formal introductions and greetings are made between the groups and they’re left to their own devices. nobody knows of their past except them, so he tries to keep the subject light, fluid. “it, uh, suits you.”

things that are hilarious, as according to im suhee: performing a cute song about eating bananas while wearing a sexy cat costume. it’s fun, she thinks. it’s the first chance she’s gotten to really show off this side of her         the side that throws winks at the crowds and laughs gregariously with the other melody members and blows kisses comfortably during their cover of siren’s mr chu. all the while, she’s careful not to push it too far, it’s too soon for that. the costume might have granted her some agency to act a little flirtier than usual, but they still have an image to maintain         banana girls. she’s fine with being a banana girl. she thought she’d hate the song by now, after almost three weeks of performing it day in and day out, but she doesn’t. quite the opposite in fact, it’s grown even more on suhee. 

she isn’t thinking of anything other than herself as she prances about on fright fest’s main stage, increasingly thankful for her safety shorts. they say their goodbyes and shuffle off, suhee flashing her smile, something she always used to insist on keeping hidden to maintain a cool exterior. 

the smile drops from her face in an instant when she sees a familiar face in the wings, her gaze turning icy. but she’s made a promise to herself, a post-debut promise to be a better person in this new chapter of her life. let go of past grudges and annoyances, if only to make room for new ones. 

time to make good on her word.

“ i’m not some kind of comic book nerd. i’m just a cat. ” 

maybe she shouldn’t have expected to be able to change herself so quickly. maybe letting go of minor things would be easier, like that time that horse faced girl thought they were equally as good looking. not things like messed up dads. maybe not new things either, like a cousin she never knew she had         though that one she wasn’t all that sure she was angry about so much as confused with. 

definitely not ex-boyfriends, especially not when she’s standing backstage staring one in the face and they’re both dressed like they’re rogue cast members of andrew lloyd webber’s cats.

“ and what are you? something dorky? what’s with the little bell? ”  she raises one brow, hands coming to rest on her hips. it’s as close to nice as she can get. it isn’t that she particularly wants to be mean either, it’s simply a defense mechanism, telling her that when she doesn’t know how to act, this is the right port of call.

I N Y O U N G‌:

“i did see!” her tone was bit but it did lack a bit of excitement, the kind suhee expected from inyoung at this point. “once again, congratulation on your debut and you’re first concert stage. you even got to open the show!” amazing really. then she took the chance to turn the topic towards herself. ( something her ‘friend’ failed to do. ) “do you like my costume? i came as a zombie pirate. the face makeup took the longest.”

suhee raises one carefully carved out eyebrow when she hears the lack of enthusiasm in inyoung’s voice, but quickly lets it drop again. she thought inyoung liked hearing about her life as a newly debuted idol, even though suhee herself never liked hearing about her friends’ exciting new opportunities after they debuted, something she’s conveniently put to the back of her mind so that she can keep on talking about herself, free of any guilt.

“ it is amazing, isn’t it? ”  she agrees, a smug little smile pulling at the corners of her lips as she takes another sip from her drink. she flicks her hair over her shoulder or tries to at the very least. the stylists made the executive decision to chop off the majority of her long, dark hair, and lightened the colour of it too, leaving her with bouncy, shoulder - length ash brown locks. it looks great, but it doesn’t work amazingly well for flipping.  “ mm. ”  she satisfactorily hums her acceptance of the congratulations inyoung offers her, eyes dropping closed momentarily.

when she opens her eyes back up, she takes in inyoung’s costume for the first time. she hadn’t even really looked at it properly on her way over to greet her, had simply seen her face and made her way across the room. her gaze traces her friend’s form from head to toe and settles on a pretty neutral reaction.

sure, it’s cute.

cute enough for handing out candy or scaring some crybaby attendees anyway.

“ the outfit is really nice, ”  she says. it’s genuine, even if it is a little disinterested in tone. she peers closely at the work she’d done on her face, eyes naturally drawn to picking out the most minuscule of flaws, because that’s all they are, minuscule, but she still notices. suhee always notices.  “ . . . and the makeup is really impressive. ”

her words are kind, but when she finishes her sentence, the promise of a “but,” hangs in the air between them.

it’s a peculiar feeling, for all of this to be real. she feels restless as she roams around backstage. melody’s set is long over, and if she’s honest, she almost wishes she could be out in the audience watching the rest of the show, or even out there giving out candy to the attendees with the rest of the trainees. but she’s stuck backstage for the remainder of the concert, just like everyone else with a set tonight.  oh. that’s right. she’s a proper, debuted idol now, not a dungeon dwelling trainee any longer. how could she forget? she never shuts up about it         as inyoung would say. she’s self - centered, that’s something suhee would never deny. there wouldn’t be any point in doing so. suhee is a good liar, but she’s not that good.  the clock ticks over to nine o’clock. the show is halfway over, and suhee can hear the last notes of dope playing, followed by the members of mystery bidding the audience farwell. she hops off the stool she’d been lurking on, anxious to catch the one and only man she deems worthy of her trust         jung sanha. maybe he’s not the most ideal older brother / semi - paternal figure for suhee to have adopted, but he’s far from the worst.  she approaches him with her mouth set into a frown and her nose scrunched up, her frustration painted all over her cute, bunny - like features. arms folded over her chest, she tilts her head to one side, mouth uncurling into a small, cautious smile. it’s a little uncharacteristic, an obvious sign that there’s something on her mind. it’s difficult for suhee to share how she feels with most people, always hiding behind defensiveness and bitchy retorts. when she’s in a better mood she’ll remind sanha that he’s lucky for her to bless him with her problems. it’s a luxury few can claim to have. “         do you have a minute? ”

one hand wrapped around her middle         across the waist of her blue overalls. she must look like a funny sight, a scowl painted across her face, with a banana shaped hairclip pinning back one side of her hair. she’d just come off fright fest’s main stage, and to say the least she was feeling . . . underwhelmed.

pros: opening the show is pretty cool. cons: they sang one song of their own, because fuck the track she and jiae wrote, right? and by the time siren closes the show at midnight . . . no one is going to remember the five girls dropping bananas all over the stage. 

her grip on the coffee cup in her hand tightens. they’ll be closing the show one day, she knows it. if siren can do it, then they can too, if the company plays their cards right.

suhee scans the room for a friendly face, and sees a group of people in costume being brought in by staff. she squints to get a closer look         oh? inyoung? she nods to herself in understanding. they were using trainees for shit at the event. she skips over to inyoung and paints on her smuggest, most pleased face, gently pulling her away from the gaggle of the trainees who’d been told to wait for their next instruction. 

“ hey! did you see me out there? ”  she asks, with a flip of her hair over her shoulder. the smile on her lips is friendly, but the look in her eyes   “ did you see? we were good, weren’t we? ”

in truth, suhee doesn’t have many friends like inyoung  (  doesn’t have many friends at all  ). girls who are the opposite to her, girls who aren’t only in it for themselves. perhaps she’s been taking advantage of it all these years.

the addam’s family values.

some time off         finally. no matter how brief, it was a nice reprieve from the business of the day otherwise. she’s still settling into her new life as a debuted idol, and though she knew she was going to have a packed schedule, had anticipated it ever since her survival show stint, hadn’t had a day off at home since the day her father walked out on them, but it’s still good to have a couple of hours to herself. maybe she’ll get to go on some of the rides, she’s never been on a rollercoaster before.

maybe she’ll get to finally tick that off her bucketlist, adrenaline junkie as she is, if she ever finds her way out of these damn hallways. when did they get so complicated and winding anyways? she was sure this was the way she’d been told to go. at least, suhee figures, she has someone with her to help her find the way out         oh eunju.

at first, it’s fine. talking mindlessly about this and that, mostly about art. but then the light starts flickering and suhee can’t help but furrow her brow, senses coming onto high alert as she hears a sound from around the corner up ahead, forcing her feet to come to a halt.

“ did you hear tha        ugh, fucking lights. ”  it’s almost comical, the way she pouts as she looks up at the lighting fixtures, which have finally flickered to their death. it would be comical, if eunju could see her.  “ do you have your phone? i’m going to turn my flashlight on. ”  

thirty seconds of rustling later, accompanied by the sound of some of the contents of suhee’s bag spilling out in the darkness, and suhee’s phone is in her hand, a small smile of relief quirking at the corners of her lips when she turns on her torch and sees eunju. her gaze drifts to their feet, to see what she’s dropped, but what she sees is the last thing she expects.

beginnings.

@ftjiae / mission: write about your muse’s feelings moments before/during their first ever debut stage. 

suhee had heard some people say that debuting was like a dream come true. for her, that wasn’t the case. if anything, it felt more like she was being paid what she was due. she’d trained for five years, had been dreaming about it for nearly twice that again, done her stint on a survival show just to miss the mark when it came down to it         it felt purely and completely right to stand on stage as im suhee: main vocal, lead dance, center.

it just felt right, even if she was dressed up as a zookeeper and even if the choreography involved not being able to keep hold of a plushy banana prop and scratching her ass. she’d made her peace with her cuteness long ago now         used to be insecure about it, detrimentally so, perhaps. but now she’s accepted it, and plans on using it to her advantage. being able to pull off both sexy and sweet is going to come in handy, she imagines.

and there’s no one else she would rather walk out on that stage with than song jiae. she squeezes her hand before they get into their positions and thinks of how they  ( she, really )  might have reacted to their debut song a couple of years ago, how she would have turned up her nose at it. but she’s more mature now, thinks nothing of it as she winks at the camera and smiles big and wide. her moves are rehearsed, her voice doesn’t crack, everything is going just how it should, everything is running smoothly. she and jiae are like a well - oiled machine. sometimes suhee thinks that they work together in tandem better than they do apart, at least when it comes to creative affairs.

it’s like a whirlwind, really. it goes by so fast, and next thing she knows, she’s backstage again, brows furrowed like something is wrong.   “ shit. ”

The much anticipated fresh concept from Dingbat Group’s newest creative venture, MELODY, has finally been released! The song talks about a monkey who is unfortunately allergic to bananas and, instead, must drink banana milk to indulge in their banana-loving tendencies. Watch the fresh, cute girls go on an adventure to find their love. MELODY is set to have their debut stage this week.

oldest of six kids, their dad walked out on them and she basically had to function as a second parent for her five brothers.

lots of resentment towards her dad because of that.

scouted when she was 12, mom tore up the business card rip

scouted again when she was fifteen, became a trainee just before her sixteenth birthday.

finished in the top 10 of superstar k season 8 in 2016, has been not so patiently waiting to debut ever since.

a talented songwriter and guitarist!! as much as she loves dancing and being on stage, and the attention that comes with it, she wants longevity in the industry, so even once melody disband or w/e, you can expect to see her name everywhere as a lyricist (or, that’s the dream anyways).
