Idk if anyone will be interested in this, but I'll share it just because. I want to make a disclaimer — I am FAR from an ace in aviation and you can't really say I know much about it. I just know a bit about the history.
Anyway, sometimes I like to write out/think through pretty basic stuff and characters just to relax, and this is one of those cases. This is Orpheus, and I made him as a universal self-insert OC for pairings with canon characters, but in the end there was practically nothing of ME left in him, so idk if you can even call it a self-insert...
Initially, I was going to pair him with Kimblee from the 2003 FMA adaptation (sorry not sorry, but that bastard has way more cool than in Brotherhood).
Maybe if you're into it you remember, but according to the lore of FMA TV1, in the world of Amestris, technology developed well... differently than in our world. The main boost went to alchemy and prosthetics. So, drumroll please... may I present to you Orpheus Sanwheel, aka the first pilot and aircraft engineer in Amestris!!!
Although it would be more accurate to say one of the first? The so-called aviation era started for us at the beginning of the twentieth century, but all the super-duper breakthroughs typically happened between the 20s and 60s. The civil war in FMA happened around 1907-1909 ?? , but the FMA world, again, lags behind ours technologically
Orpheus was born and lived in the eastern part of Amestris and was much closer to the Ishvalan people than to any other. Bro was even planning to marry an Ishvalan girl (judging by how I'm writing Mountain Tim now, I'm really fond of this trope). I think they put off the wedding for a long time because Ishvalan society is quite closed. Well, there were all sorts of stupid nuances, blah blah blah, and suddenly bro is twenty-seven, an unmarried engineer living with his parents, boom, bdshsh, the civil war in Ishval happens and he gets mobilized. Basically, you get the gist of the conflict: the poor guy lived his whole life side by side in harmony with a neighboring people until his own country sent him to fight against them (and who were you thinking of, tovarish Beria?(Im russian. Oh i guess Orpheus IS kinda related to me....)). Since it was a civil war, the Ishvalan comrades also didn't miss opportunities and carried out raids on nearby settlements. Naturally, Orpheus's home was in one of them, and it wasn't without casualties. Well, you get it. Rip daddy
According to the lore, almost the entire Ishvalan people were exterminated during the civil war. Among them was Orpheus's fiancée. On the other hand, his engineering skills were noticed by the command, and after the Ishvalan meat grinder, he was sent to Central !!! To finish developing/perfecting the flying machines that he and his father had been designing before the war. So, at the time of the main storyline, he is a little over thirty, and he's essentially trying to build airplanes in a world where people can mechanize their bodies in insane ways and overturn the world by drawing a couple of circles, but still don't have mobile phones.
Obviously, the main thing driving their dynamic with Kimblee is the fact that Kimblee is an evil fucking war criminal who probably got the most pleasure out of the Ishvalan meat grinder. But to be honest, I'm such a lazy fool that I haven't properly written either Orpheus or his relationship with Kimblee, so... Maybe some more interesting stuff with them will appear here someday. I'm actually planning to rewatch FMA TV1 in the foreseeable future.
