1) the characterization of everyone, ESPECIALLY TOM RYDER. do yall even understand how little we actually know of him in canon?? and somehow ambrosia has found the very SOUL of tom ryder, it’s actually unbelievable how viscerally real he is!! If you catch me crying how much I love tom ryder, IT’S AMBROSIA’S TOM RYDER IM TALKING ABOUT OKAY. The guy has like actually 15 fucking minutes of screen time, and ambrosia has created this whole entire human being with so witty, so REAL, so complex and captivating personality!!!!
2) the reflection. the feelings. oh the tension. it goes so fucking deep. You’d think that the mariana trench is the deepest place on earth but ambrosia’s writing goes even deeper. This fic has hurt me in ways i cannot even describe. I love it, I’m OBSESSED. I’ll be on my knees thanking ambrosia every time a brick hits my face.
3) no but literally. The way ambrosia is able to navigate through so many difficult themes like sexuality, addiction, self-worth. It’s actually amazing, I’ve never read anything AS GOOD AS THIS. I’m not kidding. It’s like a deep dive into the human psyche while still being this impossibly addicting piece of fanfiction like?? h o w
4) oh my god the plot. It’s so unique !!!!!! like yes there is the main plot and it’s pretty fucking captivating, but also the tiny tidbits around it UGH the background stuff, all the underlying things, things that were??? it's all so lore heavy i can't breaatheeeee. I know the story is not finished but I’m positive it’s going to fucking send me into orbit

I have fallen in love with BeansMakesThings' "Rumi Raised Right" AUs on AO3, and I was reading ch. 5 of "Three Hunters, a Demon, and a Baby" and thinking, "Wow, if canon-Rumi saw this interaction she'd be sobbing in abject jealousy at how well 3HD&B-Rumi's life is going in comparison," but then realized that's an unfair comparison. Sure, in the hypothetical where post-Canon Rumi got a chance to see how other variants of her managed their lives, there'd be moments of insane jealousy that would make her wonder why the multiverse seems to hate her, specifically…
…but then, 3HD&B-Rumi wasn't raised by "Doomslayer" Celine in a world where she literally fulfilled the "darkness meets the light" of the Hunter's mantra. Canon-Rumi is able to dive out of a plane that's literally falling apart, land on stage without a scratch, immediately start singing for a throng of thousands, and by the end of the movie is facing down Gwi-ma himself. Yes, she had the help of her friends and Jinu, but she literally walked into that arena with zero help, zero support, likely expecting to die, and walked out with her patterns on display and a brand new chromatic Honmoon that she and her girls put together on the fly.
That leads me to an observation I made a couple decades ago now that I've never really articulated until now; a LOT of what people consider "cool and badass" is really just…trauma embedded into people's souls and how they respond to it in a way that doesn't kill 'em.
From our own experience; we're a system that has adapted to having 3 alts 'active' at any one time.
We literally have a writing 'team' that runs different ideas through as the characters in the theater of our headspace to work out how scenes go.
We play Beat Saber differently depending on who's active, and one of the alts is a lefty so is often part of the active team since whoever's fronting gets a passive buff in the use of the left side of the body that puts them nearly on par with the right side, which is our dominant side. When that alt is in front, we do better with the left hand than the right. One alt is the 'memory' that is more capable than the others of locking the full block pattern for a track into memory so if we're taking on a particularly challenging track (Power of the Saber Blade by Dragon Force on anything harder than "Normal" falls in this category) they're active no matter what since the passive buff gives us better odds of having our blades in the right place at the right time.
We had no idea this was an unusual adaptation even among systems until we wound up in conversation with other systems and discovered that, no, the headspace isn't usually that organized. No, not everyone can have multiple alts going at once. No, not everyone gets buffs of any kind, let alone passive for having someone "slotted" into an "auxiliary" slot in the headspace. And it turned out we'd been downright intimidating to people we thought were completely badass and awesome and no way were we in their league…while they were thinking the same thing about us.
Just being a system is a result of trauma, full stop. We've been at it, in varying incarnations and capacities, for nearly five decades now and have it down to a freaking science and art. Our system, as currently assembled, is a well-oiled team that loves each other and even started writing love letters and song lyrics to the others that have us crying on the reg whenever we review them…but we've been through hell that we know has taken lives of others before. Shit we'd never wish on our worst enemies (and just having enough enemies to have a category of "worst" is evidence of yet more trauma) is stuff that, for us, is just Tuesday.
Back to Rumi; canon-Rumi would be insanely jealous of 3HD&B-Rumi from the jump because 'everything would be perfect.' A Rumi who is fully 'out' to her friends, her mother is alive, Celine isn't a cynical misanthrope who fed her misinformation for decades, a father who's alive, never felt shame about her patterns, etc.
One thing that hasn't happened in "Three Hunters, a Demon, and a Baby" (and I'm not saying this should happen, it would significantly change the flavor of the fic and ruin the overall vibe of "comforting WAFF fic that makes you giggle from pure escapism") is a mass demon attack or a threat on the scale of the Saja Boys that could, potentially, destroy not just HUNTR/X (and the Sunlight Sisters), but shred the Honmoon and pave the way for a demonic invasion.
It would be extremely interesting (and, should I get the spoons and time to write this, I might just take on the task) to see how a variant of Rumi like the 3HD&B variant is jealous of canon-Rumi for her ability to just curb stomp a demonic threat the likes of which has her parents quaking in terror.
I mean, think about it; you're Rumi. You've got demon patterns, but that's really the only negative in your world. You're working with your two best friends (possibly polycule, depending on how things go) on getting your K-Pop group HUNTR/X to climb the charts so they can do even half of what your parents did in their time as pop stars.
Into your life drops a variant set of HUNTR/X and Celine. They look at your moms and dad with blatant, visible jealousy and longing. They bicker and snipe about things that feel like non-issues but you can tell there's more under the surface. Momma Celine can't stand her variant because she's a cold, unfeeling bitch who nearly drove her daughter to suicide. There is so much Unresolved™️ between the members of this other HUNTR/X that it seems like a miracle that they even talk to each other, let alone manage to sing harmony.
But then there's a demon incursion. You think it's a little odd that it's been so long since anyone had to muster to face the demons, but then you realize, as you witness this variant version of yourself, your friends (Possible polycule? You haven't had that conversation yet), and your mom respond so fast that even your parents are just watching shell shocked. They're taking on entire legions on their own...and together? They're an unstoppable force AND immovable object instantiated into one, perfectly harmonious force of nature.
And Celine… Celine is single-handedly wiping out an equal number of demons as all three members of HUNTR/X combined. She's not a force of nature, she's a Law of the Universe declaring that no demon gets past her. And the universe obeys!
It turns out the reason there haven't been any demons bothering people lately isn't because there haven't been incursions. It's because since they arrived this variant HUNTR/X and Celine have been responding so fast and are used to a level of threat so far beyond what's normal in your experience that they've been taking care of the threats so fast it seems to you and your parents like there simply wasn't a threat. And, in effect, there wasn't…not to this other version of you, her friends, and Celine.
They're just that good.
But to get that good…they had to lose everything that you hold dear. They had to go through years of pain and heartache and suffering and being the lone forces of good against the tide of darkness that threatens to overwhelm the world, and because they stepped up to be that badass every time, their universe 'rewarded' them with bigger and more dangerous threats. Now, they're so unbelievably above and beyond your level you're not even sure if there's a comparison to be made.

I absolutely love the vibe between John and Paul in this, and there is more to it than the porn, but both sex scenes are so fucking good. I highly recommend this fic!

I have lost count of how many times i've read this. I think it's gorgeously written, incredibly sexy, but also the feels, ahhh. Absolutely wonderful.

your beauty, still burning (by when_the_pawn), explicit - Good god, this is a good one. I love fics where I forget I'm reading, if you know what I mean, and this such a fic. I was immediately absorbed; everyone's voice is so believable in this, and I think the build-up and the reveal is so, so brilliantly done. It's a perfect mix of sexy and angsty!

Both works are based on songs (If I Fell and Here There and Everywhere) and feature insanely good characterisation. The sex though, the sex!!! Nghhh!
