For me it was watching their connection develop in Season 1. They went from enemies to two people who watched someone die, to leaders in charge of a group of people, to genuine friends who can tease (and flirt with) each other. With each new change in their relationship, I shipped them even more.

Many years go by, and when Clarke is alone, she reflects on how things could have gone at various points in her youth.                                                 

Many years pass, and Clarke Griffin mourns each of her friends’ passing with a deep sorrow she cannot seem to articulate with the others. She feels a sense of burden for how everything has played out, and it weighs heavily on her shoulders, even after all of this time. Even heavier than it used to, before they left Earth the first time so long ago.

There is a bitter irony in her being the last surviving human on Earth for the final time, she thinks one night. She closes her eyes to sleep as she listens to the sound of the waves crashing on the shore, and she dreams of lost futures of times long past.

Stolen memories and dreams that never came to fruition.

There is a sense of calmness that courses through Clarke’s body as she leans back against the large tree’s rough bark. She closes her eyes and breathes in deeply. For the first time in longer than she can remember, she almost feels at peace.

Bellamy’s steady presence next to her keeps her grounded in the moment, and she feels herself relax by his side. She shifts ever so slightly and rests her head against his shoulder, and after some time, his head tilts down and rests on top of hers.
