First and foremost, let me start by saying how absolutely pumped I have been about Sailor Moon Crystal. As a hardcore “moonie” from the time I was six, I have always held this show dear to me. As a kid, I’d run around with my sailor moon toys and pretend to transform during recess. I even remember dragging my grandmother to Block Buster so that I could rent sailor moon tapes when I was to impatient to wait for them to air on cartoon network.
I learned two very important things from Sailor Moon. One was that it was okay to be girly and be a dreamer. Two was that you could be those things and also be a badass. Look at Jupiter, she was constantly love struck and yet when push came to shove… that never hindered her. She came out on top as one of the most determined and loyal scouts. She kicked major ass. The same could be said for Venus.
So why am I bringing this up? Because I recently stumbled upon a blog post that I truly believe warps everything that Sailor Moon stands for… and in the name of feminism.
In an article titled “What Sailor Moon Lacks for Women in 2014” the author goes on to criticize the artwork of the anime. The women are to leggy, they’re to thin. She picks at the voices, complaining that they are to high and squeaky in comparison to the original anime (Side note: Didn’t you know that the majority of the voice actors are the same? Hello!) She even goes on to criticize Serena’s desire to be a Princess. She compares the show to movies like Frozen, that don’t center around romance (Not that Sailor Moon does, I consider it a good 50/40 mix) and goes on to list all the ways the creators could make Sailor Moon feminist friendly! She’s even calling for LGBT characters to be brought back, even though Zoisite is straight (Even rumored to have had a thing with Ami/Mercury!) in the manga, and Neptune and Uranus, as well as the starlights, did not appear this early in the manga OR anime.
Now, I may catch heat for this… but this attitude is exactly why I do not and refuse to identify as a feminist. I’m all about girl power, but why exactly do we feel the need to tell young girls that it’s BAD to want to be a princess? And why exactly are we so upset that the Sailor Scouts are depicted as beautiful in Sailor Moon Crystal? I, being a huge fan, was thrilled to see how close to the manga they looked.
The article calls for the creators to give Usagi something outside of being a girlchild, and I have to ask, are we watching the same anime? This Usagi (Crystal as opposed to Original) seems far more confident. She draws inspiration from her friends and Mamo-chan. She’s stronger, she’s more willing to run into the fray. She’s much more of a hero in this series than she ever was in the original version.
The next thing she calls for is for the creators to remove Usagi’s love of food and fear of weight gain. Why? As a big girl, I’m not offended by this. It’s a problem majority of girls face. We love food and we don’t want to get fat. Outside of that, this is a key point in who Usagi is as a character. She LOVES food. She has loved food since the original manga came out, she’s loved food in the original anime. Is it really only now becoming a problem? Seriously?
Another problem the author apparently has is the girls desire to find boyfriends. To this, all I have to say is “Pshhhhhhhhappppuuuhhhhlease.” And if you can’t translate that, I’ll elaborate. Just about every woman dreams of finding her “one true love” and it’s NOT a bad thing. We’re creating a world full of bitter women with this attitude. You don’t have to want a boyfriend, lady, but you really shouldn’t tell other women THEY shouldn’t want one. Let them think for themselves! Isn’t that what feminism is about? A womans right to think FOR themselves? Sometimes, with people like this author, I feel like all we’ve done is turn sexism in on ourselves. We’re our own worst enemy.
Next the writer complains that women are overly sexualized in Sailor Moon Crystal and that everyone has the same body shape. It’s anime. I don’t think I’ve seen an anime yet that does not have this “problem” - though with the sailor scouts active lives, is it really far fetched to believe they would all be thin? Fighting evil by moonlight probably burns a lot of calories. As for them being overly sexualized, I’ve looked. They aren’t. Not Sailor Moon anyway. Wow, they showed a little bit more legs. Some of the bad guys have cleavage. Get over it. When we start seeing these characters run around in thongs with pasties over their nipples, then lets worry. Until then, you really have nothing to complain about here.
As mentioned before, she also calls for LGBT characters (and trans characters, as she states - I assume she didn’t know that the “T” in LGBT stands for Trans… but whatever.) to be returned to the series. This statement makes me think that she is NOT as big a fan of the show as she says she is, because if she was she’d know that in the current storyline of Sailor Moon Crystal, NONE of these characters have been introduced. Not in the Manga or the original anime.
One of the last ones is my favorite. She demands that Usagi stop needing a man to save her all the time! …Because you know, Usagi didn’t save Mamo-chan at all. It makes me scratch my head as to why people can be oblivious to these sort of things. Usagi saved Mamo-chan a few times, but that’s not important? All that’s important is that Tuxedo Mask would intervene whenever the sailor scouts got into a little trouble? Forget the fact that he was more of a distraction to the enemy, which bought the scouts time to take them out. I thought of it more as a team effort, instead of a man sweeping in to save the day.
The last two are so ridiculous, I almost don’t want to mention them. But I will anyway. She complains about Usagi’s dream of being married with kids… Yes, THAT is what she complains about. Because it’s totally awful for a woman to WANT to have a family. SERIOUSLY? Girl, you need a reality check. Aspirations that are not for you, do not mean they are not for someone else!
And lastly, she wants Mamo-chan to have a personality. Apparently he’s to much of a beefcake for her. To this, all I can say is that you are no better than the men who have complained about female characters having no personalities. You calling Mamo-chan a beefcake is the equivalent of a man calling a female character a bimbo. He HAS a personality. He’s loyal, determined, he’s distant (because he can’t remember WHO he is) and he’s driven. He’s also confused, he’s constantly feeling and recalling glimpses of memories from when he was Prince Endymion. HOW is that a personalityless beefcake, exactly!?
In conclusion, can we stop trying to force feminism where it doesn’t need to be? Please? Sailor Moon is awesome. It’s easy to identify with and it teaches our girls that being a girl is NOT wrong, nor do you have to compromise being a girl for being tough. You can be BOTH.
