“But don’t you agree that-”

I'm probably dying my hair an ombré blue tomorrow... Will it hurt me in debate rounds? Will I get marked down by judges for it? Is there any way to make it look professional enough? I'm new to debate- so I'm not sure about what is acceptable

You should be fine! If judges mark you down for that, it’s discrimination, and that’s not fair. Judges should recognize that while yes, you are a debater, you are also a high school student first and you sometimes want to experiment, because you might not be able to when you’re 30. Judges should understand that you’re young, and you want to have fun. If they do mark you down, talk to your coach about it for sure. As for hairstyles to make it look professional, a favorite of mine is a half french braid tied into a low bun at the nape of your neck. It looks super professional and cute! But any sort of bun would probably hide it if you’re really worried. Really, you should be able to do what you want to do and have fun with it. Blue hair is super cool so if you’ve got it, flaunt it!

What do you do if your opponents bring up new evidence/make new arguments/say you dropped something/extend a point they dropped in their final speech and you've already gone?

Well, first of all, if you think you’ll win the round regardless, don’t worry about it. And if your judge is a flow judge, hopefully they will catch on to the fact that you haven’t dropped anything. I don’t know if it’s the same in other events, but in Washington Public Forum you can bring up new evidence in a Final Focus/Last speech, just not new arguments. If this is the case, you shouldn’t say anything. It’s not a nice move, but it’s technically allowed.

If you feel comfortable talking to the judge, do so with your opponent in the room. Then they can argue their case, so if you’re wrong, they’ll catch you. You definitely don’t want anyone remembering you as the person who screwed up their round. If you don’t feel comfortable talking with the other team/debater, wait until they leave and talk to the judge. Politely explain the rules and how you believe they were violated, and then leave it up to the judge to make the final decision.

If you’re not comfortable speaking to your judge, (we’ve all had those judges), then thank the judge, leave the round, and tell your coach. They will be able to go to tab, explain the situation, and hopefully tab will find the ballot and contact the judge. Ultimately, you should do what you’re comfortable with and what’s necessary.

Ok, I have a question if you wouldn't mind. As someone who debates in the Texas circuit, in the Washington circuit or west coast in general, do y'all have a lot of voting down for being a certain race? I went to state and got voted down for being Hispanic and speaking Spanish before my rounds (my ballots said please speak English not Spanish) which was infuriating. I just want to know if this is just a Texas thing or really a thing around the US for debate.

I don’t know if it is as prevalent in Washington, but wherever you go you’re going to get different judges that vote you down for certain things. I know a lot of the times race can be a problem, but also whether you are a girl or a boy. For example, sometimes during crossfire girls can be docked down for being “too bitchy” while a guy would just be told he did a “good job controlling crossfire” but that’s only in extreme cases. Honestly, I don’t think it’s a problem that is specific to Texas or Washington, but rather a problem with the judge of your round.

that is SUPER fucked up and you should show your forensics league ASAP and get those judges disqualified from judging bc that is outright discrimination. make a big deal out of this because it deserves to have a big deal made. i hope things work out and you don’t have to deal with anymore racist bs like this. honestly thats appalling.
