I have an old friend who is a capital-A Activist, and she’s organized a training of trainers event for things like responding to ICE raids, organizing protests against the ICE detention facility they want to build around here, etc. In my ongoing efforts at finding the least glamorous ways to #Resist, I helped organize food, and am hanging around all day making coffee, setting up snacks and drinks and whatnot.
I talk about this stuff because I think it’s important to remember that not all activism is big protests or calling your Congresspeople. Sometimes it’s getting groceries. Sending emails. Driving someone to an appointment. Washing dishes. So if that’s more your speed than being out in public talking to other humans, you still have a place. And if you’re being loud and visible in public, remember that the behind the scenes stuff matters too. We can all do different things, and all of them are valuable, and all of them are needed. Can’t destroy a government on an empty stomach, don’t you know?
