your cat looks bizarre. it took a moment to work this one out!

so this cat is actually the same colouration as one of my mom's construction site kittens, Curie. they’re ‘black smoke torties’ (so red/black split + non-agouti+ the silver/inhibitor gene).

you might think “no way is that true”, because they look extremely different, but that’s one of the tricks of tortoishells! extremely variable expression! if you part their fur, your car should have the same silver/white undercoat as Curie

it helps to think of these cats as a chaotic blend of ‘red smoke’ and ‘black smoke’, just like regular tortoiseshells are a blend of red and black.

in red smokes, the ‘ghost tabby markings’ are more like....tabby markings. they're quite prominent.

in black smokes, the ‘ghost tabby markings’ are true to their name. they can be glimpsed on the legs/tail, but overall the cat looks solid-ish black

so when you have a smoke tortoiseshell that is primarily black, like Curie, you don’t get much of the ‘ghost tabby’ goodness. she looks more like a normal tortoishell, just with a strange silver undercoat poking out in places.

but in YOUR primarily red car, you get 100% of the ‘ghost tabby’ goodness! prominent red stripes that disappear when they enter the black regions, making her look like a red tabby that’s been flicked with paint.

I’ve seen tortoiseshells with that same unusual red vs black ratio, but I’ve never seen one that had the silver/inhibitor gene as well. your cat is extremely beautiful!

this is my housemates cat, Maple!!! she has a sister that doesn’t have the same stripes on top, but has the same pattern underneath Maples stripes. Here they are together, Maple and Syrup!
