I'm making this blog to help others (and myself) as we're learning Korean. My Japanese blog is funwithjapanese, but I don't think I will do grammar lessons on this blog seeing as my Korean isn't very good yet. “(Right) Teacher, how old are you?” “I’m not a teacher. And I’m 25 years old.” “(Right) Wow. Then are you a mom? After we finish talking, let’s play shoe tossing!”

“(오른쪽) 선생님, 선생님은 몇살이에요?” “언니는 선생님 아니에요. 그리고 25살이에요.” “(오른쪽) 우와. 그럼 엄마예요? 우리 얘기 다하고 같이 신발던지기 하고 놀아요!”

“(Right) In life, there are two things that I really don’t get. How to study well and how to diet. Nevertheless, there are so many other things we know, right? It seems it might be okay not to know those two.”

“나중에 커서 뭐가되고 싶어요?” “가방이요. 가방이 돼서 예쁜 레이스랑 반짝거리는 단추들 달고 돌아다니고 싶어요. 아직 엄마한테는 비밀이에요.”

“I came back to Korea after graduating from university abroad. I’m looking for work now, but I’m worried both because the job market is tight and because I think Korean company culture doesn’t fit me well. I don’t really like the culture of drinking or after-hours company dinners, and one time when I went to do a job interview, they even made us stand at attention and bow. You could probably see this expression on my face during the interview: ‘Ah, I really don’t want to work at this company.’ I’m worried about finding a job, but also about what will happen after I do find one…”

“해외에서 대학을 나오고, 한국으로 돌아왔어요. 이제 일을 찾는데 구직 자체가 힘들기도 하고, 한국 기업 문화도 잘 안 맞는 거 같아서 걱정이에요. 술이나 회식문화도 그렇고, 한 번은 제가 면접을 보러갔는데 차렷 경례를 시키더라고요. 면접 볼 때 표정에 아마 나왔을 거예요. ‘아 이 회사 가고 싶지 않다.’ 일을 찾는 것도 걱정이고, 찾아도 걱정이고…”

떠나다 (ddeonada) = to leave, depart

Here comes a list of useful words you can find on most Korean beauty product and sample packagings:

화장품 - cosmetics 기능성 - functional 사용법 - way of use / how to use 증정용 - “for presentation” so in this case “not for sale” 스킨케어 - skin care 내용물 - contents 마지막 단계 - last step 피부 - skin 촉촉한 - moist 부드럽다 - soft (부드럽게- softly) 발라줍니다 - apply 피부결을 따라 - (by) following the skin’s texture 손을 깨끗이 씻은 후 - after washing your hands clean/thoroughly

슬리핑 팩 - sleeping pack 핸드 크림 - hand cream etc. (as far as I know, product types  - like these two examples above - are usually written by using the English word simply written with hangeul, so if you can read the Korean alphabet and speak English, you won’t have any trouble figuring out what type of product you are looking at ;))

제조판매업자 - (manufacturer) basically this is the brand which sells the product 제조업자 - manufacturer (which actually makes the products for different brands) 고객상담실 - customer service office (고객(님) - customer)

***This is a great beginner/early intermediate level poem!  The vocabulary is easy and the grammar is pretty straightforward.  (I was super excited when I read it because for once I didn’t struggle to find out what it meant!)***

하라 (hara):  the imperative form of 하다 (I found a helpful link explaining how to use ~라)

상처[를] 받다 (sangcheo[leul] badda):  to be hurt by something/someone

춤추다 (chumchuda):  to dance

바라보다 (baraboda):  to stare at/gaze

노래하다 (noraehada):  to sing

듣다 (dudda):  to hear/listen

일하다 (il hada):  to work

돈 (don): money

필요하다 (pilyohada):  to need

살다 (salda):  to live

마지막 날 (majimak nal): last day

To those of you who might have noticed that I am not posting every day/every other day on this blog and my Korean blog, I just wanted to let you know that I am currently taking a three-week intensive learning course at my school and have had almost no free time to concentrate on languages.  I will definitely try to get back in a study routine after the class ends next week!

“어쩌면 별들이 너의 슬픔을 가져갈지도 몰라” Day Three:  “다정히도 불어오는 바람” by 김영랑

다정하다 (dajeonghada) = to be tender, warm, affectionate

불어오다 (buleo-oda) = to blow

바람 (baram) = wind

숨결 (sumgyeol) = breathing, breath

가볍다 = to be light, soft, slight

실어 보내다 (shil-eo bonaeda) = to send (perhaps more specifically, to load up and send)

스치다 (seuchida) = to brush past/against

휘돌다 (huidolda) = to whirl, spin, turn

한숨 (hansum) = sigh

몰아 (mol-a) = altogether, in all

내가 vs. 나는

Both 내가 and 나는 are commonly used in everyday speech and both are used in reference to oneself. So how do we know when to use which?

[내가] is followed by verbs

내가 빨리 뒤었어 (I ran quickly) 내가 많이 먹을래 (I want to eat a lot)

[나는] is followed by adjectives

나는 여행 좋아해요 (I like traveling) 나는 키가 크다 (I am tall)

It is also important to note that unlike 내가, 나는 also has several forms such as: 나의 or 나에게 which refer to “me/mine” and having something done “unto me” respectively.

[What about when I use “am”?]

Since “am” is an adverb, it can be more difficult to discern on whether to use 내가 or 나는, so it is definitely worth looking into and practicing!

내가 너보다 키가 커 (I am taller than you) 나는 학생 이에요 (I am a student)

[Honorifics]

It is also important to know that both 내가 and 나는 have honorific forms as well!

내가 (inf) -> 제가 (frml) 나는 (inf) -> 저는 (frml)

***Note:  Even though “잡시” by 도연명 is the second poem in the book, I decided to skip it because the poem is over a thousand years old and the vocabulary was very difficult for me--might do that with more poems in the book depending on how hard they are***

꿈밭 (kkum bat’) = field of dreams

봄마음 (bom maeum) = heart of spring

굽이지다 (gub-ijida) = to turn, curve, wind (e.g. winding roads)

돌담 (doldam) = stone wall

돌다 (dolda) = to turn around, spin

달 (dal) = moon

흐른다 (heureunda) = to flow, spill over, run into

놀 (nol) = a glow (in the sky)

하이얀 (haiyan) = I think this is another spelling for 하얀 (white)

그림자 (geurimja) = shadow

은실 (eunshil) = silver thread

몰다 (molda) = to steer, drive, navigate

또 (ddo) = again, once more
