MODULE 5 - PLACES+FACES FINAL
Abstract
This report outlines Places+Faces social media methods, strategies and uses. It identifies how this company uses social media effectively and ineffectively, as well as suggesting ways in which they can improve their use of social media.
Introduction
Places+Faces is a striking example of how a brand successfully manages to capture a target audience through the use of various social media platforms. What started as a photography project on Tumblr (placesplusfaces.tumblr.com), has grown into a worldwide creative company which focuses on combining art, music, photography, and clothing into a culture, or rather, a lifestyle. This report will assess Places+Faces use of social media through a consideration of their various social media strategies through the platforms it utilizes such as Instagram (placesplusfaces), Twitter (@placesplusfaces), Facebook (placesplusfaces), Tumblr, Snapchat (placesplusfaces), and YouTube (PlacesPlusFaces). Moreover, it will identify the effective use of the brand’s main social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook) and ineffectiveness. In doing so, it will reflect the consensus within the literature on this topic that the main benefits of using social media are visibility, viability, and sustainability (Morales et al., 2017). Finally, this report will suggest ways in which Places+Faces can improve their social media presence and increase brand recognition.
Methodology
Places+Faces mostly use Instagram and Twitter to expand its brand recognition and reach their target audience of 13-28+ year-old individuals who share the same passion for 90s vintage-style photography, and the hip-hop culture. It is through these two main platforms that this report collected its information and conducted its analysis. The brand gained popularity through its style of photography; using famous artists/influencers as models for their cover shoots and video editorials, and vintage film cameras as their primary tool. More importantly, it promotes itself as a lifestyle brand; in that, it is selling a specific lifestyle instead of just their clothing line. The way the two founders approach this is by engaging in different creative fields; they are DJs that host parties all over the globe, photographers, videographers, creative directors, and graphic designers. The brand also creates a sense of urgency whenever a new season from their clothing collection drops; selling out most of their pieces within 15-minutes.
Results and Discussions
By conducting an audit of how Places+Faces uses social media, this report has identified the strengths and weaknesses of the ways that the brand makes use of its various social media platforms. Firstly, one of the greatest strengths of Places+Faces is its unique style of photography and story-telling which they effectively showcase on its Instagram page to draw in, influence, and increase viewership from their target audience. The brand started off by taking pictures of artists during their concerts using vintage film cameras (Nwosu, 2016). This method is also effective since people are interested in knowing which artists are associated with the brand, and it also creates a sensation that they are part of the concert experience.
Secondly, the brand effectively uses Instagram and Twitter to both create a sense of urgency whenever a new issue of its magazine and a new season from their clothing collection drops. They do this by posting on both of these platforms in order to spread the word about the latest drop. The effectiveness of Places+Faces use of social media is clearly reflected in the extremely high demand for their clothing, which triggers them to close the online store, only opening it for limited drops in which they sell out in minutes.
This is a collage of Places+Faces’ editorial for their issue of “P+F Vol. 2,” shot in Tokyo; magazine available in select stores. This picture was posted on their Instagram page to advertise the release of their new magazine.
These tweets are examples of the way the brand uses Twitter to spread the word of upcoming clothing drops and suggest new ideas to its followers.
Another way in which Places+Faces effectively uses social media is through Twitter by engaging in conversations with its customers. In one tweet they posted “I kind of want to start a podcast” pitching this idea to their followers in order to find out if this would be a popular idea or not. Further, they consistently use the hashtag #placesplusfaces in their tweets and Instagram posts to increase the branding, visibility, and promotion of the brand. Hashtags effectively increase word of mouth through its repeated use by the brand’s loyal followers (Kathryn, 2018).
These are snapshots taken from Places+Faces’ Instagram page. You can see the consistent use of the hashtag #placesplusfaces.
Despite the brand’s largely effective use of social media, further research has shown ineffectiveness in their use of social media. They are ineffective in three ways:
Places+Faces does not post content consistently; specifically in platforms such as Twitter and YouTube.
Places+Faces uses too many social media platforms which leads to its inability to be more consistent and create more meaningful content for their primary social media platforms (Instagram and Twitter).
Places+Faces has 0 followings on their Instagram account. It matters who brands follow because similar to how backlinks work in regards to SEOs (Moz, 2019), it refers its audience to Instagram pages with similar content or content that followers of the brand may like; strengthening the brand’s ability to influence what is currently “cool” or “trending.”
Conclusion and Recommendations for Improvement
This report has assessed Places+Faces use of social media. It has discussed the strengths of its use of social media through its unique style of photography, spreading the word about its clothing drops, and using it as a forum to suggest new ideas. It also pointed to the ways in which the brand uses social media ineffectively through inconsistent posting, too many social media platforms, and lack of followings. As a result of these weaknesses, this report has identified ways in which the brand can improve on their social media presence: First, Places+Faces can increase viewership by posting more photographic content on their Instagram page. Instead of exclusively using famous brand influencers, artists, or models in their photographs, the brand should take advantage of the various modelling agencies available in cities where they are most active (London, Paris, Toronto, New York, Los Angeles, etc.) given that they already have a good number of loyal supporters. Consistently posting quality content is a critical way to enhance a brand’s social media presence (10 Ways Small Businesses Can Improve Social Media Presence, 2019). Second, Places+Faces could increase brand recognition and visibility by actively engaging with their audience in a meaningful way, for example, engaging with their followers through direct messages, comments, and also interact with other social media accounts on Instagram. This approach increases the loyalty of the brand’s supporters and also increases the willingness of supporters to recommend the brand to friends/family. Finally, Places+Faces regularly feature rappers like Kanye West, Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky, etc. (Ekpoudom, 2016) in their photographs. The brand should start following artists that they normally feature on their Instagram page, and interact with their fans. This approach helps the brand gain new audiences through these artists’ Instagram page; audiences that may not have been exposed to Places+Faces.
The contents of this report are important to consider as it showcases the ways in which growing businesses can cultivate an effective social media presence, in a world where your social media presence is becoming more and more important.

Target Audience:
13-28+ year-old individuals who share the same passion for 90s vintage-style photography, and the hip-hop culture.
How to Improve Viewership/Brand Recognition:
Places+Faces can increase viewership by posting more photographic content on their Instagram page. Instead of exclusively using famous brand influencers, artists, or models in their photographs, the brand should take advantage of the various modelling agencies available in cities where they are most active (London, Paris, Toronto, New York, Los Angeles, etc.) given that they already have a good number of loyal supporters. Strength:
One of the greatest strength of Places+Faces is its ability to influence and shape our current generation through their style of photography and story-telling. The brand started off in 2013 by taking pictures of artists during their concerts using vintage film cameras (Nwosu, 2016). This trend of using vintage film cameras caught on in early 2015 and Places+Faces was one of the brands that gave it the attention that it deserved. The love and passion that goes into creating these photographs inspired many other young creative individuals to try and experiment with new ways of seeing the world through their camera lens.
Person A’s Part Improved:
Strength:
- Places+Faces has a unique style of photography that stands out.
- Places+Faces is not just a clothing brand, but a lifestyle brand. The two founders of Places+Faces are not just focused on the fashion-scene, rather, they branch out to other creative fields; they are DJs, photographers, videographers, and graphic designers.
- Places+Faces often experiment with different styles of photography; 3D-photography.
- Places+Faces has its own magazine where they showcase exclusive photographs.
- Places+Faces has an easy-to-navigate website.
Weakness:
- Places+Faces are on every social media platform, but they are most active on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.
- Places+Faces do not post consistently on their social media pages.

Suggestion for Improvement:
The online population has increased by almost 2 billion users in the past 9 years (Statista, 2019). With the predicted increase of social media use, the online population will increase as well. This makes it important to more post more frequently in order to increase the company’s online presence and not get lost in a user’s newsfeed.

Are you a chef? College student? Working parent?
Well, it doesn’t really matter who you are or what you want your skill set is because the app Yummly is made for everyone ages 12 and up.
What is it exactly?
Yummly is a Food & Drink app, that offers you “personalized guidance every step of the way.” It not only gives you instant access to over 2 million recipes, but it also makes a personalized home screen with recipes just for you based on questions they ask upon signing up.
Where can you get this product?
Version 4.4.2 is available now for free on the app store! This app is compatible with ISO 11.0 or later using the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
You can find it here:
https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/yummly-recipes-shopping-list/id589625334?mt=8
https://www.yummly.com/mobile/
Why Yummly?
This app has many useful features
Some highlights include:
Over 2 million recipes
Guided videos to help you follow along
A place to organize your recipes
Ability to choose how much time you have
Picking recipes based on your ingredients
Shopping list tab
a shopping centre
Does it measure up to these claims
I have tried out Yummly, and these claims all check out. One suggestion I have would be age restriction if people are not over drinking age, as there are alcoholic beverages on this app, and the age restriction is 12+. Yummly did not disappoint; taking the hassle out of cooking. If you are looking for an app to help you with your foodie needs, Yummly is for you!
4.8/5
Hey Kennedy!
What an informative review. I like how you included screenshots of the application interface, as it gives me an idea of the app’s functionality. One thing I would recommend you do is to explain why you gave it a 4.8/5 based on your personal experience using the app. Also, I would like to see if there are categories which I can delve into, for example, if I want to make a Slovakian cuisine, what are my choices? The reason for my bringing up categories is because I find it very minimalistic for the developers to categorize foods by its type of cuisine, or however they think is a better way for people to browse through 2 million recipes.

Mylo - The New Way to Save Change
What: Mylo is an app that helps invest your change
Why: This app is great for people who want to start investing but has little to no knowledge on the subject. It’s simple. All you need to do is hook your debit/credit card with the app and Mylo will round-up your purchases to the dollar.
How: You’ll pay a fee of one dollar per month for someone to manage your portfolio, and while you won’t make a crazy amount, it’s a great start for someone who doesn’t want to go through the hassle of investing their own money or doesn’t have a sum set aside to invest.
For example, if you bought a Venti soy-milk whipped cream and 2 pumps of vanilla, $7.28 Starbucks drink this morning then the app will round that to $8, taking the 72 cents. Once there is enough change, the app invests it based the risk you’re willing to take (through a series of questions).
Featured By: Wired, HuffPost, Financial Post, Global News
My Personal Experience: While it’s not fast money, it’s a very convenient way to invest. I’ve had this app for about a week & have saved a total $10 dollars out of my $2000 goal. It’s a slow process but as the cents add up, the savings will add up as well. (Also you can withdraw the money whenever you’d like, no extra fees).
IMO: Mylo is definitely better than putting quarters in a piggy bank. Get the App here: https://mylo.ai
My Comment:
Hey Kimberly!
I am intrigued by this app! As a university student, I am definitely looking for as many ways as I can to save money. I like that you incorporated your personal experience in the blog post. It encourages me, even more, to download the app and start saving! One thing I would suggest is to specify a target audience because an app like this would definitely attract a lot of students, such as myself, who are trying to save up for a late-night McDonalds meal. Overall, I really enjoyed this blog post as it was easy to read and informative.

Sleep Cycle App Review
We often don’t realize how our sleep schedule affects our daily routine. Sleep is one of the most significant contributing factors that impact our mood, focus, and health. So if you’re wondering why you haven’t been able to focus on your weekly readings, perhaps Sleep Cycle can help answer that question.
What is Sleep Cycle? Sleep Cycle is an app that analyzes your sleeping pattern and wakes you up at the perfect time. It tracks your sleep throughout all five stages and wakes you up during light sleep (stage 1-2). It also records any snoring!
How does it work? Sleep Cycle uses sound analysis algorithm to identify sleep states, track movements in bed, as well as snoring. It uses a “wake-up phase” (30 minutes by default) that ends at your set alarm time. During this phase, Sleep Cycle will monitor signals from your body to wake you softly when you are in your lightest sleep stage. Make sure your phone faces upwards, and the microphone is not blocked when starting the cycle. Otherwise, the app won’t be able to track your sleep properly, resulting in an “untracked sleep.”
Why Sleep Cycle? Sleep Cycle not only helps you understand your sleeping pattern by providing you with the necessary information, such as:
Sleep quality;
Time in bed;
Duration and recording of snoring;
It also wakes you up with a subtle ringtone unlike the default alarm ringtone for the iOS. This makes waking up feel blissful, and not like a distress signal awakened you.
My Personal Experience: I have been using Sleep Cycle for the past 41 days, and I must say that it is now an essential part of my “Must-Have Apps” list. I highly recommend it, especially if you are someone under a lot of stress and have trouble focusing.
Where can I download this app?
Download it on your iPhone or Android for FREE!

GET THAT

intro
My name is Kresna, Kresna Soeyanto. I’ve got a middle name. It’s Nandiwardhana, though I don’t usually bring it up. I’m currently a 3rd-year student at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario; studying Politics, Philosophy and Economics. It’s going well so far, though I really want to leave this place. It does not help nor contribute to my creative vision. I want to have a career in the creative field whether it be fashion, photography, music, film, etc. I just want to make art.
This generation is different from the others. We are currently undergoing a drastic change in our way of life and this impacts our daily interactions with those around us. We should really start looking at people as creative beings with infinite potential.
Social media has its good and bad. The good thing about social media is the exposure we get from different individuals from different walks of life. The stories they share, the content they post can inspire others to be creative, to do good, to be kind and all that. I personally follow a lot of fashion and photography accounts. The current wave of photographers love using film cameras or using digital cameras and editing the pictures to look like it was taken from a film camera using Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop. I really like what people are doing right now with photography.
The bad thing about social media. Social media has been linked to causing severe depression and anxiety in individuals. This is a fact. People worry too much about the amount of likes they get on Instagram, the amount of followers they have, whether their post is trending or not; things that are just...irrelevant. I think some of us are starting to forget what true human interaction is like. We’ve become so judgemental of others that we look down on those who are trying. Trying. Since when has it become not cool to try? I’ve tried things and you’ve tried them too. Social media...what a beautiful tragedy.
