No Puzzle Can Stop Layton's Apprentice!

"Perfect!" She jumped in place and clapped her hands together in excitement, despite the fact that Luke was still pressing her for information. Jeez, for a little kid, Luke wasn’t nearly as fun as Flora had hoped. Well, she supposed the Professor was usually the one behind setting these sorts of things up. And he did have a habit of disclosing their location before heading out, so as much as Flora wanted to keep her huge plan a huge secret, she guessed she’d have to let him know a few things.

"Well, I don’t want to spoil the whole adventure, but I guess I can give you a few details.” After all he really only wanted to know the destination, right? She could tell him that much. “We’re going back to St. Mystere! Aren’t you excited?” Because she sure was! Some might think that revisiting a town the girl knew inside and out would be boring, but there was always something she could get herself into there, especially since she knew her way around so well! There were so many secret shortcuts that only she knew about, and that was only the very beginning of it all!

And it would be nice to check on that family fortune of hers, even if she didn’t want to take any of it. After all, if she did, then wasn’t the whole place set to fall apart or something like that? Yeah, the people she surrounded herself with when she was younger were technically robots, but that didn’t matter. They were all still family to her.

[Back to St. Mystere? Gosh, it'd been such a long time since Luke had set foot in there, but it was definitely a village that imprinted itself in the thirteen-year-old's mind. After all, an entire village composed of mechanical villagers! Who could forget such an adventure, especially the one where they'd first found Flora and even Baron Augustus Reinhold's fortune? And, geez, it turned out to be one dangerous treasure. As soon as Luke heard that, as soon as it was touched, that it would cause the entire village to crumble, he recalled stiffening himself up--how could he cause all the villagers he'd come to know and adore simply go into a deep sleep, from which they'd never awaken? Gosh, the thought almost made him tremble, but he didn't make that visible.]

[Still...a trip back to the village that earned him so many new friends, even if they were mechanical, and Flora's arrival in his and the professor's "family", sounded pretty good to him. It'd be nice to pay St. Mystere a visit and see how everyone was faring! The whole talk of the trip made Luke glad that they'd decided not to lay a finger on the fortune awaiting behind the secret entrance, even if it would've made them filthy stinkin' rich. No way was the brunet going to leave such an incredible village behind, and from what Flora had said herself, neither would she.]

Ooh, a journey to head back to St. Mystere! That sounds awfully fun to me, Flora--it's been such a long time since we met you there, huh? [Oh, man, who cared that he was still dressed in his pajamas? Luke was absolutely psyched to pay his robotic friends a visit! Oh, but first...] Wait, Flora...h-how exactly are we going to get there? Can you drive yet...? I don't think the professor would be too keen on us taking the Laytonmobile out, y'know...

"Of course he would!" Flora pouted, giving Luke her best set of puppy dog eyes. They often worked on his mentor, so the same should work on the apprentice, right? That’s what she was hoping, anyway. Especially because, honestly, there’s no way the professor would approve of this, unfortunate as it was. He was always so overprotective of her, and all just because she was a girl, jeez!

But she wasn’t letting that get her down now, no siree! She had an opportunity on her hands, here. The professor was out doing who knew what, and she was not going to let this chance slip. She’d drag this kid on a super great adventure, she was sure. After all, if she went anywhere with Luke, it was bound to attract adventure eventually, especially with the way he could speak to animals!

"Besides, if you don’t come with me, I’ll just go off on my own, and isn’t it a gentleman’s duty to help a lady in need?" Because seriously, if Flora went off on her own when she was in one of these moods, she was absolutely 100% going to get herself into some sort of trouble.

[Oh, no. Oh, frick, she was giving him the dreaded puppy dog eyes--okay, Luke, muster up all your strength. Not even the professor can resist those, most of the time, and you are much stronger than any old set of adorable eyes and--well, heck. It was no use, he'd fallen for it already, whoops. I mean, this was the same kid that (secretly, even though it wasn't really a secret in regards of how well he hid it. Even Professor Layton knew of it!) couldn't bring himself to resist a teddy bear available for purchase. Good thing his dad had been the mayor back in Misthallery, otherwise Luke wouldn't have half of the stuffed animals he hid in his room.]

[Regardless, Flora was about ready to go off on her own! And...Professor Layton did say that it was a gentleman's duty to assist a lady in need, especially one that was giving you puppy dog eyes like she was.  Man, why did Flora have to major in the art of adorableness? I mean, who could resist that look?]

Aw...f-fine, I suppose, but only because it's my duty as a gentleman! Where do you want to go, anyway? You still haven't told me where we're going, and you can't go on an adventure if you don't have a destination! [That was common knowledge among professional adventurers like Luke; in every single one of his and the professor's cases, they always had a goal in mind. Maybe Flora didn't know that because she wasn't invited too often, whoops...]

Cookie couldn’t help but smile like a huge nerd at Luke’s interpretation of the girl. Perfect! He was doing absolutely perfect! Too perfect. Cookie’d better step up her game. Man, though, this kid was gonna have a rough as heck time when he went back to that lame-o professor of his, wasn’t he? She’d gone and corrupted the poor boy beyond belief. Which was, of course, something she was insanely proud of. As swoon-worthy as this dorks attempt at being gentlemanly was, he deserved to live a little! He was still a kid, after all. All of that polite nonsense could wait until he was a grown up, she was sure.

"Lame? Lame? You better be talkin’ bout some other chump, gal, because this guy’s gonna totally woo you.” She continued on in her fairly good attempt at a masculine voice, pausing as the guy went to swing which turned out fairly decent, surprisingly! Well, Cookie guessed the guy was pretty buff, but the character she’d made up for him sure as heck wasn’t.

She opened her mouth to continue on, but cut herself off before she could say anything, excitedly clapping her hands together as she realized that she and Luke were up next!

"Alright, shorty, enough joshin’ around, we gotta be serious now, you ready?" She muttered the words to him as to not alert the owner of the game to the super secret plan she had up her sleeve, grabbing Luke by the cuff of his sweater and dragging him up to the game. They had to play this cool, and Cookie decided that the best way to do that was to pick up the hammer, faking as much difficulty as possible. Hopefully, Luke would get the cue to help her out.

And, really, these two were adorable, so there was no way some stupid carnie was gonna tell them they couldn’t work together to do this hammer game, right? Right.

[Luke found it almost impossible not to burst with laughter towards how she'd lowered her voice so well, not to mention how well she'd captured the man's personality--or, well, what the duckette assumed it would be like. This entire game of theirs consisted entirely of assumptions, anyway, so did it really matter? Regardless, the brunet still felt a hint of guilt within him for performing such an ungentlemanly act, but...the professor didn't have to know about that, right? This would be his and Cookie's little secret--now, if only Luke was actually skilled at keeping secrets.]

[In fact, the brunet had barely noticed that it was their turn--and time to initiate their brilliant plan, working together to nab the biggest prize of them all. Well, actually, it was just a giant teddy bear, but Luke couldn't admit that hey, he actually really wanted that bear. Teddy bears were his favorite stuffed animals--or, uh, they would be if he was into those baby toys that he secretly slept with every single night. Either way, Cookie had mentioned how it was guaranteed to work if they begged to try the machine together because of their adorable nature, so it was obviously worth a try! Hopefully, this entire ordeal wouldn't make him less gentlemanly, but Cookie's ways were beginning to rub off on the duckette, whoops.]

[He almost protested--rather childishly, he might add--when Cookie actually called him a shorty, which was one of his more unsavory nicknames, but he managed to hold it back. Maybe he was still a bit gentlemanly, even after impersonating and ridiculing the people trying out the test-your-strength machine! That, or, he was merely suppressing the unbelievably impish child within him. Both were rather likely, especially as he couldn't even admit to himself that he slept with a teddy bear.]

[Okay, no more time for joshing around, just like Cookie had said! It was time to initiate phase one, helping the brunette with the hammer that Luke figured she was pretending to struggle with. The duckette hurried over, holding his arms around her--even though it was awkward as heck--and positioned his hands over hers.]

C'mon, Cookie, I'll show you how it's done! [Luke offered her a wink, as a sort of signal to prove that their plan was a go. No protests so far--things were looking pretty good!]

[ It was a nice day outside, Trucy was walking home from one of her day shows. It was unusual to be alone, though. She had been so used to walking home with her father…but he’d been so busy lately that she was getting used to being by herself…And of course Apollo was busy too…being an attorney and all.

Trucy thought almost all hope was lost until she ran into someone—Oops. ]

[ The magician tripped and fell, bringing who ever she ran into down with her. She rolled over to the side, and sat up straight looking over at the boy. ]

[Luke had been heading towards his new home, the one located in America--gosh, it felt so foreign, but that was understandable considering that he'd come all the way from London. He had to admit that he'd definitely miss everyone, especially the professor and Flora, but Luke had been writing the two of them as often as he could! Writing wasn't necessarily a substitute for seeing them in person, but it was the closest he could get for now, and it sure beat not talking to them at all.]

[His thoughts were interrupted by a shriek emerging from whomever had just bumped into him--Luke released a pained "oof!" and crashed to the floor, along with the person whom had tumbled into him. For a moment, the brunet just lied there, dazed and absolutely puzzled--had he been so absorbed in his thoughts that he hadn't even noticed the lady in front of him. Gradually, he sat up, rubbing the back of his head, when it occurred to him that the girl herself had collapsed, too. What kind of a gentleman was he, being so concerned about himself rather than her.]

[Quickly, the boy practically leaped to his feet, offering a hand to the brunette (despite the fact that she was much taller and possibly older, since he was rather short for his age) in the hopes of helping her up.]

I-I'm so sorry, Miss!!! How clumsy of me, I-I shouldn't have bumped into you!! Are...a-are you alright? [His voice was panicked, which wasn't very gentlemanly, he had to admit, so he attempted to calm himself down a bit.] H-Here, erm...I'll help you up!

[Luke grinned towards the brunette, adjusting his cap; he was rather excited to see Flora again, just before he headed back to his new home in America. Of course, he wasn't expecting her to look so shocked--Flora had been expecting him to visit, right?]

Correct! What, Flora, weren't you expecting me? Surely the professor wouldn't keep you in the dark towards how I came over for a visit!

[ She noticed how familiar he looked, the same clothes and look of another she knew…causing her to stare for a moment. ]

…Ah- do pardon me for staring, but…your name wouldn’t happen to be Luke, would it?

[Luke's eyes widened a bit in surprise--was this woman really who he thought she might've been? Of course, if she was the woman in that painting...that wasn't possible! So this had to be Katia, right...? They did look very similar, though Luke recalled Katia having much shorter hair...]

O-Oh, erm, I don't mind! Yes, my name's Luke. To be quite honest, I'm a bit surprised you remember me! And...you're Katia, right?

[That had to be right, as it couldn't be the woman from the painting, though...the resemblance was rather uncanny.]

This wasn’t as easy as she thought it would be. How come Luke practically jumped at the chance to do anything with the professor, and he wasn’t doing the same for her? Sure, it was still early, but if Layton had woken Luke up rather than her, Flora was sure the boy would be up, dressed, and ready to go within the next three minutes. What was wrong with her, anyway? Was she not fun enough, or something? Was it because everyone thought her cooking tasted gross? You know, if she got to hang out with the two of them more, she wouldn’t have enough time to cook, ever think of that?

Speaking of her cooking, let’s ignore Luke’s response to that. The less she thinks about how much everyone dislikes her food, the less upset she’ll get.

"It’s not too early for an adventure! When you and the professor leave for mysteries, it’s usually pretty early, anyway, right? Just because it’s a holiday doesn’t mean we should let it go to waste by sleeping in!" What dumb logic.

[If you asked Luke, sleeping in definitely wasn't a waste of time; I mean, it could sometimes be healthy to get a nice day's rest when it was a holiday. That was one of the best parts of being on holiday, actually! Not that the brunet would ever admit that aloud, especially in front of the professor, who was an early riser himself.]

[Speaking of the professor, would he even approve of Flora and Luke going on an adventure together at seven in the morning? Just what kind of adventure were they going on, anyway? Flora hadn't exactly specified, and surely, if he asked, she'd most likely conceal it with "it's a mystery!" or something to that effect. With a slight sigh escaping from the duckette's lips, Luke rose from his covers and stood up beside the pouting brunette, facing her with a mixture of exhaustion and crossness written on his features.]

W-Well...I suppose I can't argue with that logic, but speaking of the professor, do you think he would even approve of us walking out on our own to go on an adventure? Just where exactly are we even going...? [Even though he was almost certain he'd be met with a cryptic response, it was worth a try to ask.]

Nice try, Luke, but Flora saw that, and she couldn’t help but giggle; although she did her best to cover her mouth with her hand afterwards so she seemed a bit less rude. Too bad it really didn’t help at all. Well, whatever, Luke was still sleepy. Maybe he wouldn’t even notice.

It really was pretty cute that he still slept with a teddy bear, though. And sort of funny, since she thought only girls did that at his age. And also her age. She may or may not sleep with a stuffed animal from time to time, I mean, what teenage girl DOESN’T?

"It’s seven," she chirped, once she was sure she could speak to him without giggling. He just looked so funny all sleepy and messy-haired like that. "It’s pretty easy to wake up early when you’re a healthy eater. This is exactly why you and the professor should eat my cooking from time to time."

Luke heard her giggle, but he was a bit too exhausted to care; who got up at seven in the morning on a holiday, anyway? He figured she was just laughing at the fact that he was still so sleepy, even though it was seven in the morning. Gosh, Flora, you need to get your sleeping schedule straight. Normally, Luke would wake up earlier than she!

Healthy eating as an excuse, considering the fact that Flora put frickn fish in the cakes she baked, she was obviously insane. Yup, there was no other excuse--Flora even mentioning her cooking made Luke cringe a bit, though that aforementioned cringe was covered by blankets, thank gosh. Sure, he didn't exactly like...nor was he able to digest Flora's cooking, but he was an aspiring gentleman, so he couldn't insult a lady's cooking...even if she needed a wake-up call.

"S-seven? In the morning? Gosh, Flora, I don't ever think I've seen you up this early on a holiday...still, er, healthy food? I'll bet that your cooking is...great, uh, yeah. Maybe I'll convince the Professor to try it some time?" More like ask to get the frick out of the house because of the hazard known as Flora's cooking. "Isn't seven a bit too early for an adventure, anyway?"

Was seven in the morning too early to be up? No, probably not, but it might have been too early to be fully dressed and ready to head out the door for a large majority of people. Welp, oh well! It’s not like she could go back to bed now now that she was up, right? Right. So she guessed she might as well wake Luke. After all, the professor was busy with university work today, so it was the perfect opportunity for her and Luke to spend some time together.

She ate a quick cereal breakfast before making her way into the guest room Luke often stayed in when he was visiting. Luke was basically part of the family and it was really cute. She’d always wanted a little brother.

"Luke, time to get up! Adventure awaits, or something like that, right?"

Luke had been snuggled up in his bedsheets, drooling slightly due to the dream of his involving puzzles and sweets, but when he heard Flora's voice, he nearly jolted out of his bedsheets. Normally, the brunet would be a heavy sleeper, but if he heard someone calling out to him to get him awake, he automatically assumed he was late for school or something. When he heard the words "adventure awaits" and spotted Flora's familiar face, he breathed a small sigh of relief and plopped back down in his bed.

He was still adjusted to his school schedule, which wasn't even in practice now, otherwise he probably wouldn't have been able to spend the night in the Professor's home. When he did visit on these occasions, Luke always brought a suitcase of some sort, and the duckette was even dressed in those light blue pajamas of his. Of course, he'd not only been snuggling his sheets, but also his favorite teddy bear, which he quickly hid under the covers. How embarrassing would it be for Flora to know that he still slept with a teddy?

Rubbing at his crusty eyes and messing with his ruffled hair, Luke managed to wake up enough to actually respond.

"...Er, good morning, Flora...what time is it? How did you even manage to wake up this early?"

Cookie smiled a pretty victorious looking smile, laughing a bit at Luke’s portrayal of the guy. It wasn’t any news that Luke liked to spend his time being all boring and polite, so it was a pretty great thing to see him actually having fun for once! In Cookie’s terms, anyway. Because she was a thousand percent sure that it was impossible to have fun while you were behaving properly. That would just be ridiculous, jeez. Polite people having fun? What a joke.

Well, at least Luke was getting the hang of things! Sort of. He still sounded really nervous and Cookie was pretty sure she heard his voice crack at least once. At least he wasn’t crying. If he started crying over being rude, Cookie was out. She’d win a skateboard from somewhere and literally ollie out.

As the next couple wandered their way up to the game, Cookie ran over a few quick scenario ideas in her head.

"Okay, I’ll be the guy this time," she decided after a moment or two of very complicated and sophisticated analyzing. By which I mean she glanced at them and came up with an incredibly ridiculous back story for the both of them. Originally she’d been planning on letting Luke start this one, but he was still getting the hang of this. It’d be better if she guided him through this slow and steady.

"Oh, man," she started, doing her best to lower her voice to match her interpretation of the big tough manly man that probably wasn’t that manly at all. “Are you lookin’ at this, babe? Do you see these muscles? These muscles’re gonna win you a prize, so you better start payin’ attention. But stay on the phone with your ex, I wanna gloat when I’m done with this."

Luke was still trying his best not to start snickering; he'd never admit this aloud, but perhaps this was even more fun than being polite; if he told Cookie, she might tell the professor, and Luke wasn't allowing that. Of course, it was still pretty obvious from the way he was grinning and holding in his laughter that this was still a source of amusement for him. Even so, he totally wasn't going to admit that and risk the professor knowing about this ungentlemanly behavior. For now, he'd just go along with it, and attempt not to break his cover of being a gentleman...or, as gentlemanly as he could be in this situation.

In fact, he was beginning to get the hang of things already; he was so ready for whatever target they had next. Even if his..."character" was this really sassy-looking, barely even wearing anything girl with a rebellious female haircut. Oh, man, he was so gonna be able to pull this off, even if it was going to deem him "ungentlemanly"...he was only being in-character. In completely exaggerated, yet totally realistic character.

This new story ought to be promising, at least from Cookie's introduction; being on the phone with her ex was already a nice way to give Luke the starting gun. He examined the girl a bit more; she had this really apparent, most likely fake tan that simply made her appear even more one of those stereotypical stupid girls that you find on the telly on those channels that his mother and sometimes even his father liked to watch, but the one that the duckette preferred not to. Their behavior was completely unladylike.

Okay, it was his turn now; you can do this, Luke Triton. He made sure to give her the sassiest, rudest, dimwitted girl impression.

"Yeah, yeah, whatever you say, babe." he paused to let the ex on her phone speak, then continued. "That? Oh, that was some lame guy. He's showing off, what a loser, ugh. Yeah, we should totally hook up sometime. I doubt I'm stayin' with this guy, he's tryin' to impress me with one of those lame-o test your strength booths."

FLUKE its been too long, hasn't it! what have you been up to, my little love muffin, i've been lonely without you!

Oh, dear GOD, no. It was her, that obsessed fangirl of his that kept getting his name wrong, calling him her boyfriend even though she irritated the brunet to new levels. For once, Luke was glad that the professor wasn't here to call the duckette ungentlemanly for what he was about to do.

"...Luke, my name's Luke, with no "f", and I am most certainly not your "little love muffin"!"

Cookie giggled at Luke’s first attempt. It wasn’t too bad for a wussy beginner. And this was a learning experience, after all! Not to mention the fact that Cookie was an excellent teacher when it came to things like this, so Luke would be a pro at all of this mischievous stuff by the end of the night, for sure! She hoped that nervous expression of his would go away soon, too. Or not. It was kind of cute but also wussy.

"See, you got this, blue boy, that wasn’t so hard, was it?" She paused for a moment, watching as the guy at the front of the line swung the hammer and oh wow, that little pointer thing didn’t even get halfway up the pole, what a loser. Looks like the girl was going to dump him for Tommy after all. Playing pretend with real people more like Cookie’s favorite activity ever. Too bad she couldn’t talk about it when her mom was around or else she’d get yelled at.

The girl in question looked pretty disappointed with “Jimmy," so Cookie took this moment to speak up again.

"See, Jimmy, this is what happens, when ya watch football on the telly, instead of actually gettin’ out there and kickin’ that ball around. I’m dumpin’ ya, Jim, I’m already pregnant with your brother’s child, anyway." Haha. Soap operas.

Alright, she was encouraging him now, and even though it wasn't something he'd ever admit to anyone else, it was actually a lot of fun. In fact, Luke could barely contain his snickers as Cookie so perfectly impersonated the girl and her dumping of "Jimmy". At least the brunette seemed satisfied with his performance as "Jimmy", who was still holding up the line with his ex-girlfriend now.

His tone was desperate and cracky just as any teenage guy going through puberty would sound, especially considering the fact that he looked so weak--and actually was, due to how "Isabelle" had dumped him after he couldn't even bring the arrow halfway up. Hopefully that wouldn't be the case for Luke!...But, then again, Cookie wasn't one of those snobby teenage girls.

"P-pregnant, with Tommy!? B-but we've been dating for a week...I knew there was something between you, but...h-hey, wait!" he called out, after Isabelle began to walk in the opposite direction, "N-no! I promise I'll go out and join the Patriots or something! Y-you like them, right?" Wow, A++ job, Luke, you managed to nail that almost perfectly. You're getting a gold sticker when you get home, and it won't even say "you tried" this time. You might probably get one of those after you take a shot at that test your strength game, though. Whoops.

Regardless, he was nearly bursting into laughter this time around. Some of the line-neighbors stared at the two of them in confusion, but Luke honestly didn't care, he was having too much fun. The next couple that went up was a super-buff guy and probably one of those popular girls that cheat on you a lot but never stick with one guy. The buff one looked like he was trying to impress her, but she was distracted by her phone.

"Rock, Paper, What?"

Had he really just seriously said that they should play rock, paper, scissors as they wait in line? He totally had, hasn’t he. He said it. He said the thing and he wasn’t kidding, no siree, even Cookie could tell that this dorky looking kid was one hundred percent serious when he’d said that. Oh, god, it was worse than she thought. Not only was he a polite wuss, but he was a NERD. She would obviously have to fix this. Take the kid under her wing, so to speak. Even though he was kind of taller than her and that probably wouldn’t work out very well if she were being literal, but she wasn’t, so that is a-okay.

"Listen’ta Cookie, blue boy," she said, taking a minute to put a hand on Luke’s shoulder even though that was kind of a stretch. “I’m gonna show you the ropes around here, alright? You gotta have fun with these things, and rock, paper, scissors, just ain’t gonna cut it." With her free hand, she pointed to one of the tough guys that was ahead of them, currently swinging the hammer of the game as a bored looking woman stood near him.

Okay, so suggesting Rock, Paper, Scissors didn't exactly work out. And what on earth was Cookie talking about? Impersonating the people up at the front of the line? Oh, gosh, Luke had never done this, and he felt incredibly ungentlemanly as he began snickering to himself when she stood up as though she were a sassy teenager, hands on her hips and everything. How was he going to do this without completely making a fool of himself? Actually, perhaps he could do this...he just had to examine the scene. Hey, this reminded him of a puzzle! The body language and body type of the lad up front did resemble that of a nerd or something, so he could probably do this. Yeah!

Luke settled himself down a bit, imagining how disappointed the professor would be if he witnessed this, but...the professor wasn't here right now, was he? He didn't have anything to worry about, right? He was obviously solving a puzzle while waiting in line if he got caught. Totally. Because impersonating lame teenagers trying to impress snooty girls was totally something that classified as a puzzle. Okay, yup, he could totally do this.
