Verses

Main- works in any timeline   Carmen is a local artist who managed to get lucky enough to start her own gallery. In the front are some beautiful watercolor landscapes, acrylic still life, and oil portraits. She has dabbled in them all. But the back...the back contains her secret that she prays goes unnoticed. What she can do is paint the future. And the future, my friends, is bleak indeed. The apocalypse is coming and she can’t decide who she to trust if she is to help stop it. 

Sparrow Verse:    Carmen has done everything she can to stay far away from the Sparrow Academy. There are people who flaunt their powers, like idiots, and those who keep them secret. But the thing about secrets? They have a way of getting out. It shouldn’t have been a surprise to her to receive the man himself, Reginald Hargreeves, at her door, wanting to learn more about her and her abilities. In no time at all, is was apparent he didn’t want to recruit her for the Academy, deeming her powers less than combative. That didn’t mean they weren’t useful. Now, Carmen is “on retainer” and is to call when something of interest is on the horizon. And boy, is something interesting coming all right. 

College Verse: { cw: this verse has excessive drinking and recreational drug use }    It is simple. Art School. Drinking. Drawing. Partying. Hot guys and gals. What’s a goody goody two shoes girl supposed to do? 

**There can be verses when she lives at the Academy and gets a number instead of a name, but those I’d probably want to plot out and not make actual verses of in this context**

For but a fleeting moment particles of dust floated upward in the air around him, rising as snow might lightly fall and decorating the sky above a sickly grey. If he looked, he knew what he would see: their eyes devoid of life, their bodies aged but recognizable, Luther’s fist tightly curled. When he unfurled his fingers, the flesh would feel so cold. His chest tightened, lungs stubbornly refusing air.

He couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t breathe. He couldn’t breathe.

Five managed a gasp, eyes squeezing shut. The elasticity of their flesh lingered on his skin; he’d buried the bodies he found days too late to avoid decay. He’d thought he would find his way back those first days; that was fifteen years ago. His fingers trembled as they grasped too firmly at the worn canvas, “This’s not…” Words didn’t come easily, dying on his lips as he took in the scene once again, every last detail inexplicably as Five remembered, “This makes no sense.”

It was a now-faded painting of the academy in ruin, his siblings bodies strewn about. Only, it was dated well before the event could have occurred.

“No,” he called back to the silence surrounding him, “Well, yes.” How long had he stood here, just staring? Long enough for Dolores to worry, at least; she didn’t say so outright, but he could tell by her tone of voice, “I found a painting.” Upon closer inspection, there was a signature.

Two leads were more than many of his missions with the Commission provided. Often, they were just a name and an order; he found a loose thread–or preferably two–himself when necessary and just pulled until the details he needed unraveled. The key difference between then and now, however, was that in those instances he was the inevitable. Now, Five sought to prevent the inevitable instead with nothing but the added complication of his siblings’ involvement. They were intolerable children, but that only intensified his conviction: they had so much maturing to do. They deserved the chance to grow up and make their own mistakes along the way. Judging by how they acted now, there would be many; hopefully, the consequences of theirs wouldn’t be on the same scale as his. 

His entire life built up to this moment, yet here he was grasping desperately at loose ends. The prosthetic eye turned up nothing of value. He was left with his less tangible option; should it also fall through, he had calculations to do. Eliminating three or four specific people could tweak the events just enough to prevent the Apocalypse, but sorting out just who would be tedious. Five would have to try, but he hoped it didn’t come down that close to chance in the end. 

“I’m looking for Carmen Cumel.” Jesus, he hated his voice. His lips pursed, but he forced them into a smile nevertheless; Five didn’t have time to grapple with the discomfort.

The gallery was slowing down, which was pushing Carmen closer and closer to the edge. Not because that meant her income was dwindling. It was because it was coming and there was nothing to take her mind off the matter. She ought to call her parents, book a flight home, and be with loved ones. But she couldn’t bring herself to do it. What was she supposed to do? Look her younger sister in the face and tell her she knew that the world was going to end? That she did nothing? The paintings in her store room were turning more and more vivid. As the time drew close, the more agitated Carmen became. It reflected in her work. To calm herself, the woman figured she’d clear her mind by painting. Idiotic, she supposed, but what else could she do? She’d settle in, think of a relaxing view and settle in. The sky would be dark by the time Carmen came to and the scene before her would cause her nerves to fray even further. The woman would consider screaming out of frustration, but would eventually resign herself to putting the painting with the others. The rational part of her would tell her she can’t paint the future- that kind of thing happened to other people. The more unfortunate ones. Her life was great! This line of thinking never seemed to fully sway her. Ay Dios mío.  Her normal pacing and under her breath muttering was interrupted as a kid in what appeared to be a school uniform requested to see her. Curious, Carmen raised a brow and stepped out from behind the desk that held the visitor notebook. “Carmen?” Her eyes squinted in suspicion. “Are you...with them?” God, did they really come back? “I’ll tell you what I told them. I don’t like Boy Scout Popcorn because I don’t like the kernels in my teeth. When you sell something cool, let me know. Better yet if you have a sister and she sells Girl Scout Cookies? I’ll buy those. Popcorn is out of the question.” Heaven knows she could use a little pick me up and the thought of sugar gave her something to look forward to.

let’s talk about five watching his siblings die.

by the end of season two, he has seen all of his siblings dead THREE TIMES. the last two were over the span of a few days.

the first time was of course when he time-travelled for the first time. just a few minutes after seeing his teenage siblings perfectly healthy and alive at the academy, he’s suddenly in front of the wreckage of the mansion surrounded by all of their dead adult counterparts. for the first time, he’s in a dangerous and unknown situation alone without his siblings. he spends the next 45 years of his life figuring out how to go back to save them from the apocalypse. during his entire adult life both in the apocalypse and with the commission, five never loses sight of his goal to save his family. he risks everything to go back to 2019, knowing that the commission will send assassins after him for trying to change the timeline. when the handler appears and makes him a terrible deal, he accepts it on the condition that his family survives. it’s 45 years later and five would still do ABSOLUTELY ANYTHING to save his siblings.

the second time was mere seconds after watching vanya destroy the world the first time around. five lands in dallas, hoping that his crackpot plan worked and his siblings are safe, only to find that they’re in the middle of nuclear war and the city is literally about to be obliterated with a nuke. to prevent this second doomsday, he tirelessly searches for and convinces and cajoles all of his siblings to gather together. he looks to reginald to give him advice on time travel. when that doesn’t pan out, he cuts a deal with the handler to assassinate the board, even though he clearly does not want to deal in unnecessary violence anymore. he makes an enormous personal sacrifice only to be duped into having no time at all to get everyone together with the briefcase, and then to have his siblings fail to show up again. he STILL doesn’t give up, instead deciding to go after his own past self despite knowing both the dangers of encountering himself as an assassin and all of the risks of paradox psychosis. it has now been fourteen days since he decided to jump to 2019, and (other than a couple scenes with dolores) five has had no other personal agenda except to save his uncooperative, scattered dumbasses of siblings.

the third time was at the farm, right when five thought they were safe. both of vanya’s doomsdays had been prevented; vanya had knocked out all of the commission’s agents; they had lila surrounded and diego had almost talked her down. their biggest immediate threats were gone, they were all together, and they should have been safe for the moment. instead, the handler waltzes through the door and guns down all of his siblings RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIM. the handler has always been his problem, and now his siblings were all dead because he had inadvertently brought the handler into their lives. now, even as he lies dying, he again attempts something he’s never done before to save his family.

five lives through decades of hell with the singleminded goal to save his family, yet has to watch them die THREE TIMES. the worst part is that he’s alone in this experience every single time and bears the burden of witnessing their deaths by himself.

(bonus for five not being there when ben died. when he read about it in vanya’s book, he must have wondered whether he could have saved ben if he’d been able to be on that mission.)
