i dont get why ppl defend yunos writing, and why ppl still call what happened to her an "abortion". like. what. what? dude that was a miscarriage what

the thing is that we're told from the start that all of the prisoners are murderers. as we watch milgram we realize that not all of them have committed murder directly, but have still caused the death of someone by their own actions. kazui didn't kill hinako with his own hands, but you can still say he's partly responsible for her death, because if he hadn't lied to her for all those years, she wouldn't have killed herself when he cane out. same for mahiru. she didn't realize that she was being abusive to her boyfriend, it's true, but what her report card questions at the end is how exactly he was feeling as it all went down, implying that her inattention and neglection of his feelings while she continued to harm him pushed him to the edge. so she's still party responsible for his suicide, too.

but yuno. where tf is her agency? where? how can you compare those cases of indirect murder i just mentioned to a miscarriage? i do think that yuno as a person is well-written, she is a great character worth engaging with, but they fumbled her case completely. they should've made it something else. i don't see any "moral grayness" in her case. what am i even supposed to vote her guilty for? how can someone articulate an explanation as to why she should be voted guilty, when there isn't even anything to judge...? why is a teenage girl who miscarried in the same prison as a dude who killed 12 people??

i don't think any of the prisoners should be in milgram as in milgram the facility, we've seen over and over again that it doesn't help them one bit no matter what we vote. but yuno, with this specific case, just shouldn't be in milgram the story. just make it something else bro what are we doing

even if it was abortion, which i don't consider a crime, it would've made more sense, because it would have happened because of an action of hers, she would've had a choice, a say in the matter. and abortion is also a highly debatable and questionable subject. even if lots of people don't consider it murder, it's still criminalized in lots of countries. but by making her accidentally fall and have no agency on what happened you're just. man what.

also some people say "oh but she's in prison because they're all in there because they feel guilt☝🏻" but that's just a theory... and i get that she feels guilt and considers herself a murderer, not trying to dismiss her feelings, but i still don't get her presence in the story as is since there's. nothing to judge really. she didn't do anything... tripping is a crime i guess

another thing is mahiru's vd. it is in character that mahiru would unconsciously say something so insensitive like that to yuno as her last words ("i wanted to have a baby"), but damn was that an evil writing choice. milgram when they keep forcing this teenage girl who didn't even abort, just accidentally lost the baby, to feel more and more and more guilt over the fact that she fell down the stairs. like okay. mahiru's death only served to make yuno feel guilt over... not having the baby when other people wanted one so bad. even though she didn't even have the choice to keep it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know, after looking through tumblr and talking with both of my brothers about my homeboy Mikoto Kayano. I’ve come to the conclusion that while Mikoto’s case was underwhelming, getting mad because Mikoto’s DID(an already very misunderstood and sensitive disorder) didn’t stem from childhood abuse/trauma is, dare I say, ableist. Like I’m no doctor or medical expert, but just because a good chunk of DID cases have been implied to be caused by childhood abuse/trauma doesn’t necessarily mean it’s always gonna stem from just that.

Then at some point I remembered reading one of the X Men(I know random ass shit) comics because one of the characters Daken was hot as shit, and got introduced to Jeanne-Marie AKA Aurora. A character who developed DID as a teenager from her experience in a very strict religious school for girls. Literally tried to commit ______ only to discover her mutant powers, only to be punished for “blasphemy” and then developed DID in which her alter turned into the opposite of the sweet innocent religious girl she normally is.

I know what you’re thinking: “Shiori, what does this random ass Marvel Comics character have anything to do with Mikoto or DID?” Well, Jeanne-Marie developed DID as a TEENAGER after being punished for “blasphemy” when she showed her powers(powers that saved her from ____), implying that it could happen at any moment depending on your trauma regardless of age. And funnily enough, my very first exposure to DID in media was a one off character from Tokyo Ghoul(I forgot his name to be honest), who developed DID after being tortured over and over again as an ADULT.

Now imagine being Mikoto: overworked, isolated, too prideful to ask for help or show weakness, constantly thinking “it’ll work out” or “I’ll just hold on for a little longer” and something inside just snaps after trying to hold everything in for so long and you wake up from the best nap you ever had just for the cops to show up at your door with a warrant for your arrest.

I feel like the Milgram fandom tends to forget that the laws in Japan are very different from the laws in the US.(if the fact that the legal age of consent is 16 for girls while it’s 18 for boys isn’t enough of an indicator) I get being disappointed that Mikoto’s case was “worse than Mahiru’s” or just that badly handled, but I think we should honestly keep Japan’s legality in mind before jumping on the bandwagon. And I love my overworked man Mikoto but he’s guilty as hell, and if he wasn’t in Milgram he’s either getting a long ass prison sentence or the death penalty.

My husband is a therapist. He was really interested in trauma disorders when he was studying, and became really fascinated learning more abt DID and OSDD, those disorders of the sort. I also had friends with DID and was really outspoken against endogenic systems (ppl that claim they also have alters without trauma, which has no medical backing, and heavily implies--basically flat out kinda shows--they're lying). I'm not here to get into discourse, but I promise this has some backing

Basically, I might as well say it. Realistically, you cannot develop DID as an adulthood. The disorder strictly originates in early childhood (usually before ages 6–9) as a survival response to severe, prolonged trauma. DID is not just a personality disorder, it's a **trauma** disorder. A child's brain lacks a fully integrated sense of self, allowing them to compartmentalize their trauma into separate alters. By adulthood, the personality is unified, so the brain can no longer adapt to trauma by forming new, separate identities

That's why even my husband got really upset at Mikoto's trial, cause people actually go through hell as children--extremely YOUNG too--just to get....this as your representation. This is why I don't really like using fictional medias as representation for stuff like this, which I totally get since you need to be extremely careful when portraying trauma, but esp with the examples you brought up when trying to make DID the 'evil split personality' disorder, it's just in poor taste imho

Personally, I think if Mido did exist, it would fix like...40% of Mikoto's case. Since Mido could've existed since childhood, and John could've been just a new alter (while DID itself HAS to form in childhood, a new alter forming in adulthood is actually more common than you think)

That being said, as a lawyer, Mikoto would be....really complicated as a murderer. It's like....even if the host didn't commit the crime, the whole system is still guilty. But as you said in your last paragraph, Japanese laws are different from American laws. I'm sure they would learn towards giving Mikoto psychiatric help, but obviously, he would still serve a hefty sentence. I did hear Japan doesn't rlly have lwop, but parole eligible for very narrow circumstances. Gonna have to do a little more research on that, since my husband and I are trying to team up to do a write up about Mikoto's psychology and what he could realistically get as a sentence. I'll talk more about that when we decide to post it on my blog, but that's really all my brain can say now (It's getting late where I live), but I hope this made sense

Something that my boyfriend pointed out to me that I will now frame as my own original observation (because I’ve also thought this, too) is that if her story came out, showing her as the bully first, I would have felt really differently about Muu’s character. Or even if I wasn’t super early to MILGRAM, and I came in during trial 2. She might well have ended up ended in the “you deserve what you get” realm with Shidou, in my mind.

For context: I’m a victim of both severe bullying, and psychiatric abuse. This leads to me viewing characters who are bullies (outside of specific explicit narratives about parental abuse and/or internalized bigotry), or who are doctors that commit medical malpractice, especially harshly.

Part of what got me attached to Muu in the first place was the narrative of her as a bully victim who achieved revenge. And, in the time where I understood her as a bully victim, I viewed a lot of her behavior through a sympathetic lens. I saw a lot of myself in her personality, and especially my autistic traits in how her inability to “read the room” comes across badly to others.

I did feel betrayed when it was revealed that she was a bully, too. But that also came hand-in-hand with the reveal that she was befriending Haruka — the disabled prisoner. Which, given that I was bullied for being disabled, did a lot to raise her favor, on top of all my previous work towards viewing her personality through a sympathetic lens.

It’s only because of this, I think, that I was able to eventually recognize that the way that Muu was being treated by a lot of the fandom was rooted in misogyny. The idea of the prototypical “mean girl” is treated with a more particular harshness than other forms of bullying. I’m sure, for a lot of people, that comes from a place of past trauma and personal experience, but that doesn’t change that ultimately views women as more capable of harm than men, and punishes women more harshly for similar deeds. I was unable to stop seeing how her being a supposed “bitchy and shallow teenage girl” got her treated like and theorized to be the worst of the worst, even when evidence opposite to that narrative existed (people who claimed that Muu “didn’t actually care” about Haruka, etc).

The way that Muu was developed, in a way quite unique to MILGRAM, made me ultimately give a chance to a character that I would have never been inclined to view kindly under different circumstances. And, ultimately, it made me develop a favorite character!

there's something very sinister about this scene... i'm speaking as someone outside of japan so maybe it's different but all amane's mom would have to do is say her address and that she needs medical help and the emergency services would understand that something's wrong and come over. she obviously doesn't look well, but if she's well enough to be able to type in the numbers, surely she's well enough to press the dial button? even if she couldn't speak, she could still press dial and THEN give the phone to amane.

but by giving the phone to amane, she's resolving herself of any blame. if amane makes the phone call, then amanemom can push the fall onto her instead. she could even at a later date punish her for it, for failing a test given to her by god. she just didn't expect amane to punish her, which was ultimately her downfall.
