Alright here we go

So I mentioned before that I liked season 8, and I did, but here's the thing.

It should have been longer.

It felt to me, like they were trying to wrap up the series and wash their hands of all the discourse. And who could blame them?

But what struck me about season 8 in particular was the fast dealing of new things, and the lack of explanation of why those new things occurred.

Example: all the balmeras showing up out of nowhere.

They do the barest minimum of establishing that there are other balmerans, and no establishing that the balmeras can even travel across space at spaceship level speeds.

So when they show up, last minute, with no prior warning, it feels like a cheap opportunity for voltron to get a power boost.

Balmera ex machina.

Not only was the plot rushed and jammed into a short timeframe, but character development as well. We see like, no interaction between the characters that has any weight beyond the first episode. And even that doesn't feel fleshed out.

Allura and Lance's relationship could have benefitted way more from one or two more episodes of build up. We know Lance is in love with her, bit on Alluras part if feels like a pity date followed by a very short relationship, followed by her dying. Which cheapens her character and softens any emotional blow to Lance beyond them being the same level of friends as the rest of the paladins.

I'm all for using another's characters death for a characters arc to grow, but when it means maybe an ounce more than it did to the rest of the cast, it throws off the emotional focus.

Which makes Lance getting all that emotional focus seem forced. And a lot of you were upset about him not getting character development over the past few seasons, and I think they wanted to fix that, but they did so in a lazy way.

Other instances of characters that got no attention placed on their development include

Keith and Shiro getting little to no screen time together despite their well established connection. (I'm not a sheith shipperbut still they have history and there's a lot of good character moments in the season that could have drawn from that.)

Romelle being basically tossed into the category of background characterafter the first episode. "Oh yeah she works for Hunk now. Why? Who cares? Next!"

Pidgeand her family. They get a few moments but nothing that isn't played off as a joke. "Nevermind the fact that Colleen hasn't gotten to really interact with her family at all for several years, she's just a strict mom for shits and giggles. Next!"

Shiro marrying some rando that only shows up in the background. "Who is he? Where did he and Takeshi meet? What's their relationship like? What's he like? Who cares? Next!" Except it wasn't next. It was what they chose to leave on.

The season was hurt so badly by the fact that it was only 13 episodes. It they had done a longer season, it would have been fine. It would have been a bit more to produce and be an unprecedented length, but they would have had time to really finish the season right. And not piss off a massive chunk of their fanbase.

Well shit I'm crying

I'm gonna be real I enjoyed the last season, and I've heard a lot of this fandom has had a negative reaction to it. I'm not sure why as I haven't dived into it much, but still.

I feel like it was good, for what it was. And I feel like there were some issues with the seasons overall plot structure but it presented itself well enough.

Also, and you knew this was coming, to all you Klance fans still out there, I pay my honest respects to your ship. Rest in peace.

I think the reason some people (including me) fear about kl becoming canon is that the creators might make it happen just to please the fans, something I'd find very unprofessional since they said it will never happen and considering the horrible things some kl shippers have done/said to the writers and voice actors. I read somewhere that korrasami happened because of fans appeal so what are the possibilities of them doing the same with kl? it'd be stupid if they did. Klantis don't deserve it.

I feel like the people running things DreamWorks have a good mix of integrity and unfortunately homophobia, so it's unlikely that they'll have Lance and Kieth get together when they already have Shiro as their gay sellout character.

I don't see them buckling on the Klance front, because they seem to want to keep their word and have a token gay to keep people occupied with that representation.

It's like how they'll never make Pidge canonically trans when a good number of us feel that she is.

They're not in the business of appeasing people. They're telling us a story.

So you're right about klantis not deserving Klance.

Because we're all being told a story, and some of us decided that the story should be how they want it to be like spoiled brats. They don't care how it happens, they just want the gay end result.

Which is not only selfish, but asks of DreamWorks to ignore previous iterations of Voltron, and even their own, where Lance is clearly in love with Allura.

It'd be like if you were being read a bedtime story and kept stopping your parent to tell them to change the book every chapter instead of just listening and experiencing it.

Idk that's just how I see it. Restless children that won't go to bed already.

Honestly I'm worried that Klance will become canon in S8

Why? I've seen no build up for it that suggests that, despite what all the Klance fans say. And even if it does, don't you worry. I will protect all of us from Klance

Why do Klance shippers still ship Klance? I mean since Season 7 it’s more of Allurance and so far there has been 0% Klance.

The voltron fandom has ruined so many good platonic relationships for me. Why do you think that this stuff started. Many fandoms before have had plenty of unrealistic ships, both gay and straight. But ever since Legend of Korra, I've seen a rise in people claiming that such crackships are cannon. Was Korrasami the reason for Klance blowing up?

I could see that. Tbh I love korrasami but their relationship always felt like an, out of left field, middle finger to Nickelodeon. Their build up is scarce and they don't have as many meaningful moments as the main pair in the previous Avatar series with Aang and Katara did.

But it was rushed and underdeveloped until the comics a few years later, and I feel like a lot of Klance fans were holding out for a similar turnout.

Even in days of season one I remember people going on and on about how it's a "male korrasami" and "another set of red and blue gays" and treated it like it was canon before the show even aired.

And I feel like a lot of the hype was due to Lance and Keith having a visual resemblance to Korra and Asami. And on top of that, I refer again to Korrasami being rushed.

Fans of Korrasami wanted that payoff that they just didn't get with the ship itself, and projected that heavily onto these new characters.

So as to whether or not Korrasami is responsible for Klance's popularity, I'd say it is, at least partly. Of course it didn't hurt that Keith and Lance were moderately attractive boys that people could have fun writing for, and I feel like later on when voltron promised lgbt representation people already on the Klance boat took that as it being directed at Klance becoming canon.

But the roots most likely came from Korra and Asami getting together. This may all be bullshit but it's my perception. I'd be interested to see what other fans think.

It's because someone out there decided Keith being "canonically" gay suited their shipping needs so the fanon exploded with it.

Many people have said that he's "gay coded" but for one he's so clearly not gay coded and for two I've long held the belief that character coding is just a nice way of saying stereotyping, which is a shit way to analyze a character.

Honestly I’ve been turned away from Voltron because of Klance shippers. They’re everywhere and it’s SO annoying. Ignoring the fact that Keith and Lance have a toxic dynamic (from what I’ve read) the fact that people can’t let two guys be friends, and instead have to ship them??? Like maybe they’re just really good friends. It honestly perpetuates the idea that two men who show platonic love for each other are automatically gay. Guys can be friends and have a deep bond. It doesn’t mean theyre gay
