How well do you know the trees of Mount Rainier? While cones are an easy way to identify many trees, some trees can be up to 200 feet tall which makes it challenging to see their cones. However, a recent storm blew off branches and cones from common trees in the park onto the snow. Try your hand at identifying these, then scroll down for the answers!

Tree Identification:
Top: Western Red Cedar (Thuja plicata) - A conifer, but note the distinctive scale-like leaves instead of needles. The brown upturned cones distinguish it from the other cedar in the park, Alaska Yellow Cedar, which has small berry-like cones.
Middle: Red Alder (Alnus rubra) - One of the few trees in the park that has cones but is not a conifer. This deciduous tree has small cone-like “fruits” that dry out and stay on the tree through winter.
Bottom: Western Hemlock (Tsuga mertensiana) - A common conifer in the park that can be confused with Douglas-fir at first glance. Note the flat sprays of needles, while Douglas-fir needles bristle out from all sides of the branch.

Who doesn’t love coming home to a pantless Whitie wearing stud?
This is always on repeat in my brain
I could listen to this all day
this is what peaking on molly feels like
I’m so obsessed with this
I’m trying to figure out if this is a drone of if he tapped his phone to the ceiling fan
