@storyfortfest mini posters! This is going to be such a cool year.
Hey that’s me! I’m so stoked to be in the latest issue of 101 Fiction! The theme for this issue was unicorns and there are some awesome, #weird pieces! 🦄🦄🦄🦄#flashfiction #microfiction #writing #unicorns
admittedly I don’t normally like modern shakespeare adaptations but once I went to see my cousin in a midsummer night’s dream and it opened with a high schooler saying “I don’t wanna read this play” so he sits down and eats an entire chipotle burrito on stage and then immediately falls asleep and the play begins but instead of the forest the faeries all hang out in a rainforest cafe TM and at one point in the middle of a scene the guy from the beginning just slowly drifts across the back of the stage on a skateboard, staring at all the characters as the events of the play transpire in the form of some sort of chipotle-induced coma lucid dream
#Cats and pop #surrealism after work and awful traffic is nice. Now if only the cat would bring me a #beer

Brains are weird
Sometimes I’m surprised at how my brain works. I guess I shouldn’t be since it has been in my head for like, almost 28 years now, but its a tricky lil thing.
I was too sleepy to do my readings for a poetry class last night so I read them this morning, and I had to journal for 200-250 words about connections between them and then talk about how figurative language can help us make the ordinary extraordinary or something.
I was sure I hadn’t understood a word of the readings and had no idea how I was going to talk about connections between the word goop, and was certain not even my giant mug of coffee was going to help me care about figurative language this early in the morning.
But I made my fingers start typing.
It was like a floodgate of weird, but all of a sudden I’d written way past the maximum word count and my brain had made all kinds of connections that I hadn’t noticed (or I guess I did notice - it is my brain after all).
Brains are weird ya’ll, but I guess it just goes to show that sometimes typing those few first words will open the floodgates to stuff you didn’t know was lurking in that wrinkly pruny thing in your skull.
FAILURE
I didn’t get my GIF of the day done yesterday because I didn’t go home after class due to a birthday and it was midnight when I got home and I was a sleepy goose. I’ll try to make up for it with two today or something.
My favorite New Yorker cartoon in years.
I should be sleeping or reading my readings for fiction and poetry tomorrow but I wanted to get a GIF of the day out there. So, have a ghost. I’ve been doing a lot of ghost doodles today to try to get a good looking ghostie for an upcoming SUPER SECRET project... lol.
Hi Laura!! Can I first just say you are an inspiration to me! The fact that you didn't go to art school really gives me alot of hope for the future! I do have a few questions though? Since Ive never gone to art school, whats a proper way to build a portfolio? What kind of content should I be putting in it, things art jobs might be looking for? I admit I draw a buncha of anime bcuz of my commissions but shouldnt there be something more? Thank you so much if youre able to answer! Love your stuff!!
hi! wow thanks so much! so for a portfolio, make sure you have a focus. decide what you love to do most (character design, layout design, background paint, visual development, prop design, storyboards, prop/character paint, etc.) and make your whole portfolio about it. If you love a couple of these, I say do both! my portfolio has a focus on visual development and character design, so the main jobs I do now are background paint (because of my environment visual development paintings) and visual development for characters.it sounds like you want to do character design, which is a very technical skill. push shapes, personalities, and acting in your characters. fill your portfolio with 5-point turnarounds for symmetrical characters, and 8-point turnarounds for asymmetrical characters. this is what companies want to see! being able to draw a unique character is cool, but drawing that character from every angle makes your portfolio golden in the industry.it’s fun drawing in an anime style, but there aren’t really jobs for it in the US at the moment. anime is a good jumping off point for venturing into other styles though. try to draw in lots of different styles. animation studios want to see versatility in a character design portfolio, because designers need to adapt to the style of whatever series they’re hired on.the most important thing for your portfolio in my opinion: only put things in it that you would want to do on a daily basis. if doing an 8-point turnaround of a character makes you cringe, then why would you want to do that for 40 hours a week every week?! character designers on tv series do a LOT of turnarounds! so make sure your portfolio is only what you’re most passionate about doing. my real world example: I interviewed for a job at a big studio when I first moved to LA, and I had several isometric views of a room in my portfolio. They took me forever, and I hated doing them, but I thought it made my portfolio look impressive. It turns out the studio wanted me as a visual development artist specializing in accurate isometric drawings of interiors. It wasn’t my passion. I turned it down and took a background painting job at Nickelodeon instead. I ended up loving background painting and now I’m a background painter at Disney.I hope this helps! ❤️ Decide what you want to do, work really hard, then apply!
Here, have a mustached squid dude. Just a super quick and simple GIF of the day today because my butt was thoroughly kicked at school today.
Finally, my GIF of the day! Featuring a little robot on a messed up math textbook page. If I didn’t have to go to bed, I think I’d color the ground in a bit. Maybe tomorrow I’ll work on it more.
