HOW TO DESCRIBE DREAMING TO YOUR ALIEN BUDDY, A GUIDE BY DR. RYLAND GRACE
don't
"yeah so basically like meeting you :]"
most sopping wet loverboy eyes in the world
here’s a longer cut of grace trying to get the space suit on
Another reply ask compilation! Thank you! It's been a lot of fun drawing the Project Hail Mary Atlantis AU, and I'm glad you guys have been enjoying it! Here are some quick beat boards of how I'd imagine the final astrophage battle in Atlantis could look like
*coughs* MY CRINGE
I'm probably someone's "not this guy again" on Tumblr
Felt like drawing Grace and Rocky having a beach day on Erid in Grace's biodome. Grace I think would request for the Eridians to change the temperature to be a little bit warmer to simulate a summer beach day
Summer time beach day for Rocky and Grace
My sis picked up some stuff for me at SDCC, and I’m glad that there was some PHM merch available! I’m also super happy to have the fancy version of The Martian, since I don’t know where my original paperback copy went 😠I absolutely love that the Rocky plushie says lines from the movie as well!
Took some pics at Disneyland with my Camp Snap 2 camera! It’s a digital camera without a screen, and works like a classic camera. I loved being able to just snap a pic and then wait to see how it turned out once I transferred it to my phone later.
Disneyland day means doing a semi-Disneybound of Ryland Grace! I was so happy that my yellow ears had similar colors to his other flight suits, and that I had socks that could somewhat mimic his quilt.
Felt like drawing some more Project Hail Mary Treasure Planet crossover AU sketches
Some more PHM Treasure Planet AU stuff haha
SO YOU WANT TO CROCHET THE FOX CARDIGAN
You know the one:
This post brought to you by @hollowedskin, who tagged me and said "Gayle might end up doing it."
Which, yes, it is on my list, but also, not right this second. However, I do love a bit of research, so here is what I found.
First of all, this sweater was made from this Mary Maxim pattern:
Which I was about 99% sure of when it popped up on ravelry, but then I found this youtuber who confirmed it:
I have not watched the whole video, and I don't think I've ever seen Michelle pop up on my recommendations, but looking at that thumbnail, her work looks fantastic. I'm gonna go watch the whole thing now and will report back if I am iffy. I doubt I will be.
NOTE: When she made the video, you could only get the pattern as part of a kit. This is no longer true. The link above is ONLY the pattern.
EDIT: Oh, wait, the eyes are different! So, the "official" version of the knitting pattern IS only available in a kit, but if you can tapestry, I think you can easily just adjust the eyes to be more open like they are in that version. But it is still 100% based very much on the wolf pattern.
If you don't want to watch a 40-minute video, buy the pattern and follow the gauge and the charts. I recommend single crochet because the original is done in stockinette but also because tapestry crochet (which is how you do this) looks cleanest in single crochet.
I wish Rocky were here. I always wish Rocky were here. - Project Hail Mary, Andy Weir
*gnaws on your art like a feral dog* It's so gooooood I wasn't sure how to identify it until I saw the ask about it being Don Bluth/Disney inspired and YEAH IT'S GREAT
I'm shaking Grace and Rocky like they're in a snowglobe they're so fun here
Thank you so much!! :D I'm glad you like my art of Grace and Rocky, and my art style! I'm still deep in my PHM hyperfixation and I love drawing those two haha
Bringing this here since I’m happy with how this sketch turned out!
Felt like putting this response with some more sketches. Thank you! I'm glad you like the Atlantis AU! Grace and Milo both getting disgraced from their respective academic communities due to their more out there theories at the beginning of their stories made me go "oh they are similar" haha I had been wanting to draw Grace discussing his paper for a while, and here it is!
I really wanted to draw Grace talking about his paper that got him shunned haha
hey!!! I love your phm fanarts!! They’re always so fun! Especially the Atlantis au ones!!! I noticed that you mentioned you work as a story board artist for animation with marvel. I’m applying to go to college for animation soon to hopefully do something similar and was wondering if you had any tips on what places are good to apply to or what colleges would have good programs. Also if you have any tips on what I should do for my art portfolio. thank you!!!
Thank you so much! :D I'm glad you like my art, and my Atlantis AU!
In terms of schools to apply to, I would recommend Cal State Long Beach, San Jose State, and Cal State Fullerton! They all have good animation programs, and even though they're state schools vs. art schools, many of their alumni work in the industry, including some of my friends! :D I personally went to community college for animation, but I ended up dropping out after I was offered a job on The Angry Birds Movie following a story internship I did at Disney. Most of my education came through working on the job, and learning from my coworkers and directors on how they approached drawing, composition, acting, cinematography etc. in their storyboards. My main focus was pursuing storyboarding, but in terms of animating LCAD and Ringling are both good for learning animation!
For more concentrated schools that are individual class based, Concept Design Academy and Warrior Art Camp are great options since they have classes taught by artists in the industry.
Since I went to community college vs art school, I'm not too familiar with what would be required of a portfolio to apply, but I would go with whatever requirements the school requests in their application :) For industry jobs, I can speak to what to include for a story portfolio! Typically including two to three strong storyboard sequences that tell a complete story, meaning it has a beginning, middle and end but isn't excessively long. With a story portfolio you want to demonstrate your understanding of storytelling, cinematography, and film making through your sequences, as if you were showing a single sequence from a show or film. As a story artist you are a storyteller first, and through your drawings and storyboards you interpret the script visually and cinematically. Also including gesture drawings, life drawings, and personal sketches (such as OCs, personal projects etc.) are good to round out the portfolio and show your voice as a storyteller.
Doing film studies (pausing films and drawing the shot composition for a full scene), gesture drawings, and expression studies are all important for storyboarding, since it will not only strengthen your film language library but also allow you to draw quickly and clearly. Expression studies will help you to build your library of emotions for drawing character acting in your sequences.
I hope this helps, and best of luck with your artistic endeavors! :D
