Today's random warmup
Tried something a little different after my computer finally went belly up.
I got the urge to render something but I really just wanted to relax so I decided to do a paint-over of a frame from Spirited Away, like those famous Disney ones that Tyson Murphy did. It was a really pleasant experience overall, but also surprisingly educational. The big lesson came as a result of my decision to bisect her face with the cast shadow from the window. At first it seemed like an obvious choice and I laid it in without much thought. It wasn't until I actually started to really examine the image that I noticed how brilliant the original composition was, and that the bisecting shadow was affecting it in a big way. In the original, your eye goes straight to her face and it feels comfortable and natural to leave it there. Even still, you're able to get all the visual information you need. In the paint-over version I think your eye still wants to go there, but the shadow makes it a little uncomfortable and so your eye starts to bounce across the rest of the image (and especially her knees). My hope was that the shadow would emphasize her detachment and melancholy, and narratively I thought it made more sense that she would be more comfortable with her eyes out of direct sunlight. Despite the intention I don't think the rendering added much to the image, and in fact may have taken away something because of the compositional issues it introduced. Rendering should always be purposeful and harmonize with the narrative and the composition; that's something I've known academically for a long time but never really thought much about, at least not when it comes to composition. Doing this exercise really highlighted the gap between theory and application. I definitely need to change my mental approach to lighting and remember to slow down and observe what's working in the image and how rendering will affect it. That was a really unexpected lesson to learn from a simple and relaxing exercise. What do you guys think?
