So after spending all week in migraines, calling Congresscritters in vain, dealing with medical red tape, dealing with medical issues, and putting one or two starfish back in the ocean, I went to the art studio tonight and

original reference photo of van Gogh's 1878 self-portrait I was using; plus a couple process photos below the cut to prove it's not AI. The goal is not to make a perfect copy, but to learn as much as we can by doing.

(yes, I know van Gogh started with a white untinted background; I've been having a argument with my instructor about this because our in-studio technique based on impressionists like Manet is to tint the background with a neutral complementary color, rough in a low-saturation version of midtones/lights/darks as the painter's equivalent of a sketch, and refine.)

Wendy Koopa redesign for funzies and learning

allot of people say they don't like wendy cuz she's "ugly" but that's not the problem with the design. wario's ugly and everyone loves him. the problem is it's unappealing. and Wendy's a great way to learn the difference.

first flaw was her sausage lips... yeah that's an ouch. however the pouty-ness does mach her personality. I cannot decide between the 2 lips I chose, the "Amethyst lips" are more appealing, but I think too cute for what she's supposed to be, and I personally think the wide koopa mouth with the small beesting lipstick matches her personality more. so you can decide which one you like. (the one on the right isn't meant to be smiling.. I'm just being game model accurate lmao)

The other major thing hurting her design was her colours. she's got 2 SLIGHTLY different pinks on her shell, lips and clothes, and 2 SLIGHTLY different yellows on her body and rings, that kinda pallet becomes hard to look at. pink and yellow can be a very nice pallet but not when both are as bright as possible. and her bright red pearls clashed with the pink. I chose to swap it all out with red as a referance to her original sprite, but also because we don't have a red koopaling, but 2 pink ones.

And now for the little details: I gave her the same spiked cuffs as her brothers so she looks more like she belongs on the teem. but the rings were a nod to her main attack and the thing that makes her stand out gameplay wise, I found it looked clunky on her body, so I moved it to be a bow peircing (I only put it on her left because that's where all the koopalings asymetrical traits are) said bow is pointier and more upwards to look more evil! and yes I removed the minnie mouse pokedots.. they only clutter the design and don't match her at all...

And finally her shoes, oh good lord her shoes... the poor girl's shouving her dinosour feet into size 2 pumps😭 it looks so PAINFULL!!! the more feminist thing to do would be to let her dogs bark but I actually like the way they break up the design and honestly more of the koopalings could stand to use it too. I just made them big boots. (there's a consistent thing where Bowser's shoes always have steel on the end for his claws and I wanted that on wendy too but it hanestly didn't fit at all) I also removed her Marge Simpson necklace... honestly I just find it really clunky and unnecessary.

I could have gone crazier but I wanted to stick to the scource material. I like to try and match other peoples design principles, especially when correcting problematic cartoon tropes to prove that it's not just "part of the artstyle" (the way Nintendo tried to backpeddle her "girl one" design by calling her a tomboy is hysterical... like, sure budy)

Capturing Likeness: A Guide Without Style limits

Started an art course and used one of my D&D NPCs for practice drawing the same person consistently + designing characters! ^^

Since the people have been asking about alcohol markers and progress pics. Here's an alcohol marker base I finished for a drawing of my bestie. The colors of the base don't necessarily reflect the colors that will be put on top, but are moreso used to color block areas to make them easier to identify when I draw, and to make the final burnished layers pop even more (burnishing meaning to press hard with the pencil to get full pigment payout). The unevenness of the marker application is not much of an issue for me specifically since I use heavier pencil layers, but if you plan on using light pencil layers you might want to even out the markers slightly more than I have unless you're going for a more textured look.
