Lana Del Rey for NYLON by Esteban Calderon.
“For those who did not quite understand FREAK, it could be inspired by the cult of Jim Jones, the controversial man who claimed to be the reincarnation of religious leaders like Jesus and Buddha, creating his own cult in the 70s. He was preaching an religion controversial to the Bible and was the mastermind behind the mass suicide of members of his cult in the Jonestown ranch, where his followers also lived. The suicide has even been tested (the so-called “white nights”) and performed by a similar poison to a “grape juice.” In the video we see a set similar to the 70s, where we see this girl being seduced by the cult leader and then drinking poison (hence the scene of juice) and finally rediscovering him in paradise.
And the most interesting of all is that in Ultraviolence, Lana sings about a guy named Jim: “Cause I’m your jazz singer, and you’re my cult leader.”
