GIVE IT UP FOR THE MAIN BITCH CLAURA!!
Born into a commoner family, she was rather gifted in magic. So gifted that she was appointed a royal mage, later on as Yvaine's tutor. Yvelise, Yvaine's mother, thought certainly someone as powerful and talented as Claura could handle the "wild child" Yvaine was. Claura was told all these horror stories about this monstrous child of prophecy who was locked in a tower for everyones safety, yet when she first met Yvaine she was.. rather pitiful.
It was then that they started developing a friendship rather than a mentor/mentee relationship, with Claura making excuses of Yvaine needing extra lessons to sneak her way into the tower. Seeing how the princess was treated somehow turned Claura's pity into envy. If this weak little thing was a princess, why couldn't she be someone more than just a royal mage? Shouldn't she be more worthy?
When Yvelise heard of people being able to turn others into familiars, she sought out Claura who practically jumped at the opportunity. To Yvaine it looked like Claura was hesitant, but it was all for show. To manipulate them into thinking she was on their side. "Yeah, we're friends! No, I'd never want to do something like this to you, it's Yvelise who's making me do this, it's all her fault!" Yet when Claura preformed the spell, she wanted more. Now that Yvaine was a puppet, she could strike.
Claura murdered Yvaine's parents and made it look like a freak accident in war, then when her brothers went out to mourn, she killed them as well. She forced Yvaine into a contract, manipulated the townspeople's memories to believe she was the rightful heir and Yvaine was truly the monster everyone thought she was. After all, the world was at her fingertips now.
It took a while but after serving Claura for a few centuries, Yvaine gathered the strength and willpower to put an end to Claura. Killing their first friend? Their first love? First kiss? It was hard but it needed to be done. Even now, thousands and thousands of years later, Yvaine wonders if there was any other way to stop her. Even now, Claura haunts the narrative.
