I love the characters who are exhausted. Who are in so much pain and so far above the limit of what their body and soul are capable of withstanding. Who are covered in their own blood from head to toe and who have been fighting and fighting and fighting and FIGHTING and there is no end in sight. Who are so full of love and kindness. Who are so. fucking. tired.
And who, after getting knocked down, keep standing up and picking their sword from the dust with shaky hands.
Because there is no other choice

You said that your own life mattered more than anything, did you not? Did you think I would be glad if you threw your life away to save mine? You wretch! Come back at once before I drag you out myself!
The East Palace (동궁) 2026
Please, Gu Cheon. Let us make it out of the palace alive.
officially my favorite kdrama pairing of the year. the level of devotion and obsession is unreal. i am so absolutely floored right now.
I fucking LOVE the King in this drama
And it's not only because it's Cho Seung Woo (tho it's definitely a factor), but also
he is a King who clawed his way to power and he will do anything to maintain his position. He's cruel and cunning, he is petty and vindictive, he has a sense of humor and he loves his children as much as he's capable of love. You understand why he is like that, and why he cannot be any different, given his personality and circumstances. And you also feel that none of these traits are an act, and the fact that he is ALLOWED to be all those contradictions without being reduced to a two-dimensional caricature of a ruler is so nice to see, especially after so many historical cdramas nowadays
You must leave the palace at once. Run now. Since you failed to save Prince Yeongan, His Majesty will kill you. If I leave now, you will die as Prince Yeongan did. It does not concern you. Yes it does. You saved me. And this time, I will save you.
NAM JOOHYUK as GU-CHEON 동궁 / The East Palace (2026)
kdramas: can we interest you in an 8 episode netflix original kdrama?
me: that hasn’t gone great lately
kdramas: it’s kind of creepy dark horror with palace intrigue
me: yeah horror isn’t really my thing
kdramas: what if it’s got cool action sequences
me: ehh
kdramas: what if it has super devoted unhinged badass ride or die leads
me: …
me: god damn it
That one is called Ggeomeoksali. It is no ordinary creature. It attaches to the living, not places, feeding on Yang energy. Those drained of it see terror and die. It is a terrifying creature.
When did you get in here? Stop. You. Who said you could act cute?
THE EAST PALACE 동궁 · 2026
every modern kdrama romance writer needs to watch the last episode of the east palace and learn from princess saengang and gucheon's dynamic.
SHE makes sure that he is safe and runs off to the spirit hell world to protect his life and end hers to fix this curse.
HE wakes up and immediately slits his throat to reach her.
SHE dies there to make sure that HE won't have to.
HE ends up there and gives her his LIFE to make sure she lives.
SHE immediately wakes up in the real world and RUNS to him and begs that he comes back because how can she lose him?
she then spends DAYS with his DEAD BODY and refuses to believe he's gone, before running to the river to wade into it and beg, screaming, crying for his SPIRIT even to return to her, no matter what form it takes. it's unfathomable for her to live without him.
he then wakes up and she engulfs him in a hug and then instead of staying at court or living as a princess, leaves with him for more adventures.
this is the dynamic i want from my romances. i don't want half-assed one sided nonsense. i want a princess who has never once received respect, meeting this strange ghost seeing orphan man, who calls her "princess" with more warmth than anything else, and whom she fights her own father, the king, hell, and the universe to bring back to her.
and mind you, this was not a fully or even slightly romantic drama, by any means at all. and they served SO much!

I mean she waited beside his dead body, for three days without anything confirming that he might come back to life. Thats joseon level insane, she avoided anyone trying to barry him, they probably thought she was attracting some kind of bad omen. And then she went to haunt his soul, to guide him back to his body. They did soulmate like no one this year.
