THE 69 EYES | HELSINKI VAMPIRES RELEASE OFFICIAL VIDEO FOR NEW TRACK ‘DOLCE VITA’ Founded in the Finnish capital 25 years ago, THE 69 EYES have spawned a total of ten full-length records and an additional selection of live, best-of and remastered albums. Throughout the band’s legacy THE 69 EYES have managed to thrive and reinvent their distinct blend of goth’n’roll - 2016 sees the band continue on with this legacy in the form of new album, 'Universal Monsters’. Today the band have released the official video for new track 'Dolce Vita’. Watch here:
The video was created by renowned Finnish rock and metal photographer Ville Juurikkala (NIGHTWISH, HIM, AMORPHIS). Main man Jyrki commented on the track: “The riff smelt a bit like good old METALLICA for me and I mixed it with Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty movie in my head, so that’s what it’s all about. On Saturday afternoon during the midsummer weekend in the last June I recorded all those 12 o'clock church bells at the Capitoline Hill in Rome that you can hear in the beginning of the song, so that adds some Fellini there as well!.”
As the album title Universal Monsters suggests, the band are portrayed in movie monster lightning, showing them as well classic and timeless creatures. “The covers are planned and designed as an old-school CD covers - remember when the booklets used to be as exciting as the album itself?! It will actually have five different covers being such a folder - each member of the band can be used as a cover creature of their own. Ville has really succeeded in capturing the classic movie vibe for the shots without any special make-up or photo shopping. THE 69 EYES are the universal rock ’n’ roll monsters - not so many of us left anymore”, comments Jyrki. “So from real fans I wish they would get the actual CD in their hands to get the full album treatment as we have planned it to be experienced!”

The album track list racks up as follows:
01. Dolce Vita 02. Jet Fighter Plane 03. Blackbird Pie 04. Lady Darkness 05. Stiv & Johnny 06. Never 07. Miss Pastis 08. Jerusalem 09. Shallow Graves 10. Rock 'N’ Roll Junkie 11. Blue
The first making of teaser trailer takes fans to the beginning of the album’s recording sessions with producer Johnny Lee Michaels and drummer Jussi 69 in the studio. Watch the trailer here: https://youtu.be/CWC0309-hiY

Vocalist Jyrki explains how they came up with the album title and concept: "I was walking in downtown Austin during the last SXSW festival and ran into this strange castle looking horror shop Sfanthor, which had also a house of wax kind of movie monster exhibition. The classic 30’s and 40’s movie monsters are something that you love to be afraid of and…love. I thought that would be perfect way to portray THE 69 EYES - as a band of monsters.”

“I’ve already had a short review of the album from a journalist who said it sounds exactly like it was recorded after our latest album together with producer Johnny Lee Michaels, which was Paris Kills (2002). But those years between cannot be heard. We sound as fresh as ever, and the music takes itself and us into undiscovered paths and soundscapes. How the album grew into what it has become has surprised us and you can really hear the creativity blooming there. And still it sounds like nobody else but THE 69 EYES“, explains Jyrki. “And like always, the best backing vocalists can be found from the closest bars in Helsinki! This time the local latest hard rock heroes, SANTA CRUZ were recruited for the backing vocal sessions.“
Trailer #4: https://youtu.be/dOkOjE5nsfA
Vocalist Jyrki commented: “THE 69 EYES are a guitar rock band. The main sound relies on two guitars, bass and drums - a classic set up. The overall sound is also shaped by all members’ different musical backgrounds. Rhythm guitarist Timo-Timo’s musical inspiration used to be punk rock, classic UK '77 punk as well as 80’s hardcore punk. Not only just rhythm guitar, he’s often behind the melodic guitar licks the make THE 69 EYES songs so memorable. No beers in these sessions but you’ll get to hear a glimpse of the next single pick from the album called 'Dolce Vita’! Still some two months to for that and the album though. Naturally it’s pure co-incidence that his features are strangely similar to Bela Lugosi…“
Trailer #5: Watch the band discuss songwriting: https://youtu.be/PQ1gZ25peQ8
Vocalist Jyrki commented: "There’s about a month for the actual album release, so here’s one more chance to hear new samples from the album. And who would be better to deliver them than the main composer himself! Believe it or not kids, this music is still created by guitars played by humans!”
Trailer #6: Watch as the band discuss how producer Johnny Lee Michaels, also known as the '6th bat’, contributed towards the recording of 'Universal Monsters’: https://youtu.be/LioCq16vYrU
Vocalist Jyrki commented: “When we work together with him, he’s not only just a producer but an engineer, mixer, keyboardist, percussionist and backing vocalist too. He even sings those Lakota Indian vocals on 'Blackbird Pie’. Johnny’s working methods are closer to Phil Spector and Brian Wilson than any other. You can hear both his coolness and madness on the album.”
Watch the official video for 'Jet Fighter Plane’:
“As I first heard the instrumental demo of the song, it immediately sounded for me like a song from the early 80’s new wave/post punk days. You know, like when the music was heavily inspired by David Bowie’s dark visions, the Cold War, the threat of nuclear war and 1984 - kind of the future. So I wrote such lyrics from the past - and all of a sudden, the history started to repeat itself and the Cold War winds started to blow again! It was very strange - all of a sudden THE 69 EYES have a song which is very 'today’ and even political, longing back the days of peace”, explains singer Jyrki 69. “We also wanted the video to be artistic and visually capturing the vibe and theme of the song. There is hope but also darkness, violence and innocence. And it’s only goth 'n’ roll.”
