My first summer in chicago, my roommate and I got too high and then tried to walk to wicker(???) to an oberweiss but we talked so much we forgot where we were going and ended up in cabrini green. we almost died, but that was a real good time in our friendship.

October 24, 1926: Harry Houdini’s Last Performance On this day in 1926, Harry Houdini, a stunt performer famous for his incredible escape acts, performed his final show at the Garrick Theatre in Detroit, Michigan. Houdini, born Erik Weisz, first attracted notice as “Harry Handcuff Houdini” on a tour of Europe during which he challenged different police forces to keep him locked up. All of his work was characterized by gimmickry and audience involvement. Flying Lotus

I like texture in music. The type of music that you feel has instruments piled on top of one another and is being manipulated by a large man with mean spirit. F.L. is the master of that. There are so many intricate pieces of drums, synth and vocals put together. It's full. "Until the Quiet Comes", is an excellent example of why more popular groups are floating to the same style of sound. Radiohead came up on my Galaxy randomly one day. It was a track, "Bloom", that has disjointed beats almost playing over themselves while guitar, bass, and play along in tune. I thought immediately of Flying Lotus. 

It seems he's moved on from "Cosmogramma's" more Jazz infused scope. While there are still some elements that reflect some of that, this L.P. seems to dwell more in the string and voice spectrum. FlyLo's superiority over the beat is still present. I don't think anybody can touch this guy right now. The guest vocalists are nothing to sneeze at either. Niki Randa, Erykah Badu, Thom Yorke, Laura Darlington, and one of his proteges, Thundercat. All around good stuff here. (Favorite Tracks: All In, Getting There, All the Secrets, Tiny Tortures, Hunger, Phantasm)

Last night Flying Lotus came to the Metro. This show almost knocked me senseless. I haven't had so much fun at a show since I saw LCD Soundsystem or Bjork. I'm usually the guy taking as many pics as possible, but last nights outing didn't leave me a chance to breathe let alone take pictures. I've never seen the Metro so packed. There were a ton of people. It had to be at capacity. 

If F.L.'s intention was to light a fire under our asses, then mission accomplished. He rocked through a string of recognizable cuts and also a few I've never heard before. There were also some surprises, like playing Beastie Boys' "Intergalactic", in a way that only he can do it. Also, the light show! How can anyone forget the light show? Very cool. Lots of dancing, lots of screaming and major respect all funneled via the Metro for Flying Lotus. He may feel at home in the studio but on the road he is a titan. I wish he toured more often. Great show all around.

Blade Runner

Is it me or does this movie keep getting cooler? It's been thirty years and has seen countless edited versions but this thing is still fucking awesome. I'm especially digging the new art booklet included in the new edition. Sure I know they're quadruple dipping here but dang that new poster looks great!

The new trailer is right on point. 

As a kid my brother-in-law introduced me to Blade Runner. It was the ten year anniversary directors cut or something. I loved it, but kind of didn't understand it completely. Then for one of my birthdays, maybe my fifthteenth, my brother gave me the book by Philip K. Dick. I read it and it stayed with me for a while. I thought about it a lot. What makes humans "human"? At the time it was a heavy question for me to think about. I still think about this question. I don't know the answer.

New Tattoo

Mystery Science Theater 3000 was a show that used to be on Comedy Central in the early years before the network scored huge hits like South Park and Chappelle's Show. Can you remember those days?  Joel Hodgson created, co-wrote and starred in MST3K. The premise of the show as that "Joel" was blasted off into space by his boss. As a form of torture he was forced to watch terrible movies. He creates robot friends and together they rip these films a new one. It was fucking hilarious. This was in 1988. I was four years old. Flash forward about eight years to my sisters wedding.

Tony, my brother-in-law, introduced me to a lot things including MST3K. He had a box full of VHS tapes, each about six hours, full of episodes from the early years of the show. This was something completely new to me. I credit this as being a major influence on my sense of humor and it was one the many things we shared and bonded with. I will always love him for this. His students call him Q. After eighteen years as an art teacher he retired and went into tattooing. (Note: I attended the high school he taught at. He just couldn't get rid of me)

I have two tattoos. One which I love and another that I've fallen out of love with. It happens. I've never considered myself a tattoo guy. The ones I have are generally out of sight. I love them actually but it takes me forever to decide what I want and where I want it. A week ago I pulled the trigger and called him up to tell him I was finally ready for him to ink me. The design was of the three main characters of MST3K in silhouette. It's an image most associated with the show.

Q asked me to come over his house. He recently moved to a nearby suburb. It's in a very quiet part of Cicero and his basement is setup with a professional chair, gun, ink and needles. Lot's of needles of different sizes. So many needles... It's a heroin addicts wet dream in there. Everything is sterilized, clean and safe. He asks you to sign a waiver and everything. He's really put a lot into this business. Also, his basement doesn't have that creepy serial killer dank smell to it which is nice. We both asked each other why he hadn't done this sooner. It's a perfect fit!

Have you ever laughed really hard while also having your skin pierced by a billion needle jabs? I have. It was the most at ease I've been while getting tattooed. Maybe it's because I've know Q for over fifteen years or maybe it's because he is such a sweet and funny guy. I choose the ladder. I've already decided that I won't go to anyone else to get my ink done.
