actually i love the reveal that the only reason effie got involved with the hunger games at all was because her little sister needed her.

the connections between effie and katniss revealed in sotr are DECIMATING. she directly says she would never abandon her sister. she is dragged into the capitol's games because she cares for others. effie is katniss's foil in many ways, but in sotr, we see that she is katniss if katniss was from the capitol. their main differences are the brainwashing and the societies in which they grew up. they are meant to highlight once again the fact that katniss's biggest strength (as discussed in this wonderful post!!) is her luck and timing.

Ok but can we talk about the fact that we now have a very specific reason for WHY Haymitch called Katniss ‘sweetheart’ and it was never something that he intended to be condescending or mean?

Like that’s what he called Louella, who he loved like a sister and was killed before she even made it to the arena. And when Katniss started coming to the Hob after Burdock died in the mines, she wore her hair in two braids and it reminded Haymitch of Louella, who wore her hair in two braids. And then when she volunteered, the old nickname slipped out.

Okay, you know what's devastating me about Sunrise On The Reaping?

Haymitch could afford to buy things at the Donners' bakery. Like, not all the time and probably not often, but it was still a possibility if he found the right thing to trade. While, Katniss, on the other hand, the best thing she could offer Prim was staring at the cakes from outside because they could NEVER afford anything there.

Like, in twenty-five years, things got radically worse ever since Haymitch's victory, which was probably punishment from the Capitol, and that's just... It's just so fucking tragic

If we take a step back and look at thr political climate of today, we can see that Suzanne Collins is desperately trying to say something, that if we continue where we are headed, democracy will crumble and days that we're celebrations will be turned into vessels of hate. It's already happening. I don't believe that our world will ever come to the point of the hunger games being a reality, but it doesn't have to, to be so staunchly relevant today. SOTR, BOSAS, and the original THG trilogy will continue to stand the test of time as a warning, a reminder and truth. There's more to say about this, but i don't have the heads pace right now
