Okay so imagine that a mother gives birth to a baby boy. And imagine that the mother really wanted a girl instead. So the mother decides to raise the child as a girl. She buys pink clothes, little dresses, hair pins, scolds the child when he “doesn’t act ladylike” etc etc etc.

Most people would see this as child abuse. And they would be right.

But what if I told you that this happens every single fucking day. Children who are not boys are forced to act like boys, and children who are not girls are forced to act like girls.

This is what it’s like growing up transgender in a household with a family that does not accept you.

NYC Launches First Public Campaign on Bathrooms and Transgender Rights

In the midst of several states killing anti-discrimination laws and stripping the LGBT community of basic protections, New York has stood out. In March, Mayor Bill de Blasio made headlines when he signed an executive order mandating that people be given the right to use bathrooms consistent with their gender identity. The NYPD recently made its own statement in support of transgender rights with a post at their headquarters noting that bathrooms in all police stations are now gender-neutral, according to the New York Daily News.

So. I’ve known for a while that I wouldn’t make it to any of the tour dates, but I’ve been feeling it more lately. I’ve been listening to MCS for about eight years now, and while that isn’t even half as long as they’ve been together, it’s a significant portion of my life. I have long said that there’s a song for every occasion in their catalog, and it’s a wrench knowing that it’s not going to keep expanding. Of course, I can’t expect them to keep writing just for my sake, so I’m working on making my peace with it.
