Danish 5th graders plan their city in Minecraft
Today we tested our city planning game with a group of 5th graders from a local school. The game was a competition where groups of students played that they were architechtural firms, competing to win a task in the tender, given by the municipality. The piece of land the students were worked on, was an area where the municipalty wants to develop housing with 300 appartments.
The challenge given to the students was to show how they would create 20 appartments with an approximate size of 100m2. A deadline was given after lunchbreak, where the server had a visit from a “representative” from the municipality. This person was actually a student sitting next door chatting to the kids, asking them about their ideas.
Here is some progress after a weeks’ work on the Alcraft server at the Albertslund city hall.

The mayor came by to see what the students built. He chatted to them about their ideas and chose the best project.
Time to deliver - the mayor is coming…
Today our test students were given their deadline. They have to complete their builds and present it to the mayor, who will name the winning project. This will be the one that best fulfills the criteria of being “child-friendly”.
We started the day by discussing what skills were vital, when games were made. Our focus was that students needed to collaborate in order to make a good product.
Our first test
We had a team of students come by to test our idea for a building game. Its very basic at the moment and still needs developing. The challenge for students is to have conversations about how they wish to build. After that, they have to coordinate their activities ingame. So this will be where we need to provide some scaffolding for their collaboration.
Make city planning a game
Using the urban space as a game arena
Today we tested some of the mockups we made last week. The goal was to investigate how the urban space in Minecraft could be used as a platform for gamemaking. The first concept was a COD style domination game, which turned out to be quite fun. After that we all reflected on how the game could be developed further.
The other game was a treasure hunt, where players were required to use google to navigate and find locations. This game didn’t give as much enjoyment as the first, but there was agreement that the idea could be made quite entertaining.
The goal we are working towards is: “Can we make urban planning a game?”. To get there we need to try to do some urban planning ourselves, so we picked an area to rebuild, and thats where we finished for the day.
Gamedesign in urban spaces
Today students were challenged to create a game prototype, situated in the urban space of Albertslund. Firstly we had a brainstorm where everyone contributed ideas for games we could by inspired by. Treasure hunts, hunger games, manhunts and urban combat were some of the ideas mentioned.
Students then went into groups to decide on and develop a basic idea. After a pencil and paper sketch up the groups went into Minecraft to let their concept materialize. One of the premises for this challenge was to create a game that didn’t require a vast amount of building, but rather used the cityscape as the playground.
When we met again, some of the groups had already made concepts that required building arenas - these ideas had to be abandoned or adjusted, so the idea could be applicable to any place in the map. At the end of our session all groups presented their prototypes. One group managed to create a playable mockup of their game, which was a COD style game with a time limit and elements of capture the flag and domination to it. We look forward to testing this next week.
Another group had used a school building to create a teacher vs student scenario, which had not fully taken shape yet.
Virtual world vs actual world
Today we investigated further into our local area in Minecraft. We started by discussing how to navigate using google maps, and getting direction in the Minecraft world.
Our goals for the day were to make certain inquiries regarding how the virtual world related to the physical world. Another goal was to find certain cultural and geografical reference points - both to practice navigating and to observe how Minecraft interpreted the raw data.
These were the challenges the students worked on:
- How long is the schools’ main building in Minecraft compared to the actual length?
- Is it true that the scale is 1block = 1 metre?
- How long does it take to walk around the school - in Minecraft and the actual building
- Rebuild the schools facade, taking notice of symmetry and the overall layout of the building.
- What challenges do you meet? Why does this happen?
Our 3D expert, Casper, went outside to take photos of the building, he ended up rebuilding the whole building in 2 hours - Well done! Another student conducted measurements: In Minecraft it was 45 blocks long and the actual length was 46 strides. This supports that the map is in 1:1. Regarding movement there was quite a difference. Walking around the school took 45 secs in Minecraft and 2mins16secs for the actual building. This data can could be interesting to work with in calculating and comparing speed in Minecraft.

Kids learn about public housing and democracy in Minecraft
This class is using a map built by The Gameworkshop to solve problems in virtual public housing areas. The course is funded by BL and developed by DAC(Danish Architechture Center)
The Gameworkshop at ESOF14
We were invited to present our Minecraft world, "The Mysterious Island" at ESOF last June. The highlight of the day was when our stand was invaded by 50 1st graders, who all had a go at the map. The map was used in a national research project aimed at exploring and demonstrating new methods of learning.
Building rpg’s in Language arts
Here’s some documentation that we haven’t had time to publish till now. In March we visited a school where we tested a game developed for teaching Language arts - in this case danish. The map was created to facilitate a class of 30 students all working on separate stories, within the same Minecraft world. Students at the Gameworkshop developed and tested the map and afterwards they helped set it up and run it in the classroom.
Making a “First Playable” Tommorrow we will be delivering a first playable version of our map. We’ve worked on prioritizing assignments and concentrating on content that was vital to playability.

Today we tested our Minecraft world, “Lykkeparken” with a group of 22 5th graders. We were very pleased with the student response and received a great deal of feedback for the next weeks’ development. Our deadline will be the 19th May, where the map will be featured on the danish youtube star channel Robinsamse.
