The planet-scanning and resource extraction mini-game in Mass Effect 2 is meant to provide a significantly more relaxed sense of play when in contrast with the rest of the game. The player’s only limit is the number of Probes they can fire, and they can be acquired very cheaply. There is no time limit on these resources, and no punishment for collecting too many. In short, it just provides the player a bounty of upgrade materials, something the rest of the game fights against them on at every turn.
